Blackish Season 1

I’ll start by saying that I didn’t originally watch this when it first started. The reason was because I thought there was no way a show called Blackish could not be the most racist show in the world. Long story short I started watching it on someone else’s recommendation so I figured I’d at least give it a try. The show exceeded my expectations by far.

I’m pretty sure my favorite episode is the one where Zoey is dating the white guy and Andre can’t deal with it. I can’t even give a specific reason why it was my favorite episode it was just SO funny. I think the greatest thing about this show is how blatantly and unapologetically it calls attention to different stereotypes and issues, whether it’s race, gender, seriously anything you can think of. The writing just tackles it in the most honest way and I love it.

The characters are all very likable. Jack and Diane are the cutest. I feel about them the way I feel about Lily on Modern Family. They have the best one liners and I find myself laughing at every single thing they say. I also love Laurence Fishburne as an actor and I love watching him comment on Dre’s parenting skills. The grandmother is also hilarious. Every time she says “Black Jesus!” I start laughing so hard. Overall I just feel like the show accomplishes everything a sitcom should and then some. Even when it doesn’t seem like it, the show is always subtly tackling bigger issues.

I wasn’t thrilled with the season finale. I felt like the show had way better episodes throughout the season.. I don’t know if the ending was set up that way in case the show didn’t get renewed? So that maybe you’d feel like you had some closer, but either way I’m glad that we’ll be getting more Blackish next year. Really looking forward to what the writers cook up for season 2. If you’ve had the opportunity to watch the show what did you think? What was your favorite episode?
