Catwoman #6 (June 2002) Written
by Ed Brubaker, art by Brad Rader and Cameron Stewart
Holly Robinson was introduced in the
late 1980s in Batman: Year One, but
she became a major character again when Catwoman
relaunched in 2002. Writer Ed Brubaker added a new element to her, making her
one of the first lesbian characters in a superhero comic book when she began a
relationship with Karon, a woman who worked at a delicatessen in the East End.
Brubaker was worried that DC might not be supportive of showcasing a lesbian
couple, especially when it came to their first kiss in this issue, but the
publisher was behind him and didn’t object at all. The book went on to win a
GLAAD award for its depiction of Holly and Karon’s relationship.
