He was so proud when Doris joined the swim team. He got up every morning at 5:00 a.m. and took her to practice, and he never missed one of her meets. He would scream so loudly when she won, “That’s the stuff, Big D, that’s the stuff!” And everybody would look at him. Now, most kids would be embarrassed by this, but Doris didn’t care. She loved it. And every time she’d finish a race, she’d lift her head and find her dad in the crowd with his thumbs-up.
