Hey Charlie! First off, I adore your art. It gives me all the feels. Secondly, since you're primarily a self taught artist I'm wondering if you have any resources you strongly recommend for someone hoping to someday have a similar job to yours in concept art? ESSAY IMPENDING.

I think, along with resources, I’d always recommend having a good idea of what ‘area’ you want to work in too. My job is kind of a strange one (in that it’s an house job but we’re not producing the games or films or actual products.) We are a step in the production line. I get to be part of sweet projects, but also I get to be part of many… I’m not locked into whatever a studio might be making for 2 or 3 years etc. My fingers are in a lotta pies.

The reason I say that is because a lot of people coming into concept will likely need more skills than I have. I am 95% a 2D artist. I work with 3D but very rarely, and not enough to know the inns and outs. I like 2D… and I consider illustration to be the sweetest spot of all the work I do, so I’m quite happy with that balance (and I’m an old fucking curmudgeon and I don’t wanna learn no 3D.)

If you went for a traditional role in a games studio, it will probably be more expected for you to be fluent in 3D. Not always of course! But it’s likely another good skillset to have. Purely 2D (just art focused) roles are not something that I see as often as mutiltasking roles. Which makes a lot of sense. 2D art is often mostly needed at the beginning of a project, and briefly at the end. In my seven years at Atomhawk I’ve seen a lot of people in other studios laid off, and a lot of studios go under. So, multitasking roles mean people will always have something to do.

APOLOGIES. I’M SOUNDING A LITTLE DOOM AND GLOOM. Great jobs exists! People will always make cool stuff!

I’m very much a jack of all trades and my job demands a lot of different things: characters / turn arounds / outfit designs / expression sheets / illustration / marketing art / pitch art / but it’s all primarly focused around characters. So. If characters are what you want - look into that! I would say that when it comes to apply for / getting work etc, we always love to see range. If someone isn’t showing me all the process behind their work it’s likely the first thing I’m going to ask for when it comes to an interview. I think if you have shiny work (on a freelance basis) a client would have enough confidence in the end result. But for a production role like mine, I wanna see that stuff.

Rough sketches through to shiny polished work. The whole lot. I want it all. I want to see people’s thinking! I’m rambling.

First of all: be able to draw well. Know your characters. Know your figures. Know your anatomy enough to make it convincing and be able to twist it when you need to. We get a lot of people who apply, who, quite simply (don’t hate me) are not good enough yet. We have people who work in tons of different styles and methods but at the heart of it, they can draw well.

DESIGN. Mother of god. Design. Drawing well is the first step, but you also have to have that creative flair to be able to come up with ideas and be able to sell them convincingly. Drawing the thing is only half the battle. No one wants a beautifully rendered character wearing the most impractical / boring outfit you’ve ever seen (just an example). Thinking logically about design is something I’ve seen underestimated many times over the years. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s more important than someones drawing abilities. When it comes down to it, drawing is just the tool to represent the design.

Resources wise: the internet is your oyster! Cast a wide net. Create the kind of work you want to do but also push yourself. I think the results are usually better when artists find an area they’re good in and the push the boundaries of that. Better than trying to be a jack of every single trade possible. Don’t have an awesome portfolio full of character work and then think ‘oh, wait, this is just characters, maybe I should stick a fucking car in there too?’ YOU KNOW? Do what you do - and do it well.

Briefly just a few of the things that helped me most: any massive black videos you can find. Mostly for process. Jason Chan’s videos easily had the most impact for me, both in learning how to improve my process and painting the kind of characters I wanted to. Micheal Hampton and Mike Mattesi (force) for anatomy and energy in poses. Your peers! Your favourite artists in the industry at the moment! The places and people you will learn the most from are always so very individual.

February 10th at 7:43 est we have a full moon lunar eclipse at 22 degrees leo. This lunar eclipse is super interesting because it makes some pretty special configurations in the sky. Firstly an eclipse is a threshold. They tend to represent points of no return. Lunar eclipses particularly tend to “eclipse” things out of our lives. They are points of culmination and usually mark some kind of ending. That said eclipses are wild cards in a sense. A lunar eclipse is kind of like a supercharged full moon so there is that element of fruition as well. It can be a time of harvest. Most certainly it is a time of marked change. Eclipses are very powerful and can be felt for 6 months in each direction. This eclipse on the 10th is the beginning of a series of powerful eclipses with the culmination happening in late august in what is being called “The Great American Eclipse” where a full solar eclipse (that will be visible here) will traverse the entire united states of america, passing directly over us, beginning in the northwest of the country and ending in the southeast. This is going to be of extreme consequence to the USA. But we will focus on that later.

This current lunar eclipse is forming some very auspicious aspects with the planets in the sky. It seems to be in total harmony with the current transiting planets. It forms a mystic rectangle in fire and air, a five pointed star in fire and air, and a grand fire trine. Lots of passion around this eclipse and air fueling the flames of the passion. But the configuration is not tense. Everything is flowing harmoniously. This firestorm is not negative. It’s a point of passion, inspiration and fruition. It almost feels like a celebration of sorts. Whatever is “eclipsed” out of our lives moves us towards harmony and fulfillment. We see a reward for our efforts or the ripening of positive karmas. Something baneful is burned out of our lives.

With the jupiter uranus opposition involved it can be quite sudden and it can have a feeling of grandiosity. Wherever 22 degrees of leo falls in your chart is the place where there can be a much needed clearing or fruition. Jupiter will have just gone retrograde and will still be on the fixed star spica. They will be sextiling this eclipse. The eclipse will be trining uranus giving it an element of surprise. Jupiter will be trining the sun. Very fortunate. The sun will be sextiling uranus. Whatever tensions the oppositions between the sun and moon, and jupiter and uranus may cause flow out harmoniously into something positive. It’s the tension of a bow on violin strings that produces beautiful music. The eclipse and uranus will be in a grand fire trine with saturn. Saturn offers some stability here which is great because having an eclipse even in positive aspect with uranus can be disorienting in its suddenness and force. Some astrologers have predicted doom and gloom around this eclipse. But when I look at the sky, the supremely positive and harmonious aspects this eclipse makes with the planets around it tell me an entirely different story.

Let’s look at how this eclipse affects each rising sign:

Taurus rising, this eclipse falls in your 4th house. You can see some culmination of fruition around your home, your parents, your place of birth, your sense of stability and security.

Thanks for your question, love!  This is something I’ve always feared with my own writing, since I like to handle heavier subject matter.  But never fear!  I have some ideas to help you soften that depressive edge!

How to Brighten a Dark Story

  • Comedy — I’m not talking about non-stop gut-busting laughter here, but there’s room in every story for a little humor.  Some writers sprinkle humor into their dialogue, sometimes during editing — some writers include sarcasm or levity in their descriptions (or as a natural part of their author’s voice).  Some writers designate a character for comedic relief and insert them into heavy scenes… although this has backfired in the past.

  • Small victories — Even in the darkest of situations, writers have to pull the curtains back and show a little light.  This may not be what happens in real life, but it’s part of crafting a successful story — giving readers the hope they need to continue through the story.  If you find your plot is consistently sloping downward, this could be the root of your “depressive tone”.  Find places to sprinkle small victories for your protagonist — positive relationship development, an advantage over the antagonist, a fun moment away from the plot, etc.  Give your readers a “sneak peek” of happiness, so they know that this story won’t be a doom & gloom, Gone-with-the-Wind-esque depressionfest.
  • Positive characters — Even if your protagonist is a sunshiney personality, when the sh!t really hits the fan, they won’t be able to smile about it.  But the good thing is that no matter how dark life gets, there are always people in it who give you a boost — people with a fresh perspective or more reserves of hope, or even people who have no idea what you’re facing and just help distract you from the bad stuff.  This is where secondary characters come in handy!  Use the supporting cast to counteract all your MC’s pain and suffering with humor, kindness, and maybe their own (simpler) problems to solve.
  • Lighter subplots — When the plot can’t be lightened up at all, and even your characters can’t put a positive spin on things, it’s time to create a distraction – so break out your romance plots, your new friendships, your awkward encounters, and that one insufferably peppy Character A who makes smoke come out of Character B’s ears every few chapters.  Think back to that episode of Friends – the one where Ross and Rachel (SPOILER) are breaking up in a really devastating way, while all their friends are stuck in the bedroom with nothing to eat but organic leg wax.  Sure, this is a bit too sunny for some stories, but you get the gist.
  • Imagery — Last but not least, the foundation of tone in fiction – the silent killer of happy times and hope and sunshine – dim imagery.  The less colorful, unique, or entertaining your scenery is, the more difficult it will be to achieve a lighter mood.  Writers crafting a dark story will typically lean toward nighttime scenes and old-fashioned, poor, or ruinous architecture, as well as rainy, wintry, or desolate outdoor environments.  If you’re writing a story about a terminally-ill orphan in a war-torn country, living in an old, colorless house, it’s going to be pretty difficult to lighten things up.  Try casually brightening the scenery in your descriptions!  Even if the whole world is burning, let the reader notice the beautiful red-orange of the sky.
