German sailors of the U-175 Type IX U-boat are plucked from the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean after their submarine was sunk by the USCGC Spencer (WPG-36) and the USCGC Duane (WPG-33). The U-175 was amongst six German U-boats that attacked an Allied convoy off of the south-west coast of Ireland. Of the 54 men that had embarked in U-175, 13 were killed, 19 were rescued by Spencer and 22 were picked up by Duane, where they were formally taken POWs, treated for their wounds and provided with dry clothing and warm food.
