CEO Joe Ricketts, who founded TD Ameritrade, pulled the plug on the sites a week after reporters and editors from DNAinfo and Gothamist won a contentious fight to join a union. The move puts 115 journalists suddenly out of a job, the New York Times reported.

Reporters at the local news sites, which were still churning out scheduled social media content Thursday afternoon linking to the now-defunct sites, did not appear to have been informed of the decision ahead of the closure.“I just walked back from the bathroom to find out that everyone at @Gothamist and @DNAinfoNY has been laid off,” tweeted Christopher Robbins, the city editor at Gothamist and DNAinfo.

Overwatch Offense Heroes!

I finished the first set of weapon infographics! Goodness sakes, this is quite the undertaking. I won’t be including Doomfist until he’s well out of PTR, so I’ll be moving on to defense heroes next! Wahoo!

A little background: Even with my Overwatch obsession and 400+ levels of playtime, there are still some mechanical nuances that I find myself learning! I wanted to put together some visual reference to break down the quirks of each hero’s sidearms. Hopefully this will help some newbies/visual learners/curious gamers out there!

Keep checking back here for updates and fixes as I nitpick and as the Overwatch team re-balances the stats :-) And as always, feel free to shoot me comments, questions, etc! Happy dance!

AH, ALSO! Please don’t re-post without asking me first: these are very likely to change as the game does and I want to avoid as many erroneous, defunct copies of these floating around as possible.

I am an Arctic researcher. Donald Trump is deleting my citations | Victoria Herrmann
These politically motivated data deletions come at a time when the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the global average
By Victoria Herrmann

As an Arctic researcher, I’m used to gaps in data. Just over 1% of US Arctic waters have been surveyed to modern standards. In truth, some of the maps we use today haven’t been updated since the second world war. Navigating uncharted waters can prove difficult, but it comes with the territory of working in such a remote part of the world.

Over the past two months though, I’ve been navigating a different type of uncharted territory: the deleting of what little data we have by the Trump administration.

At first, the distress flare of lost data came as a surge of defunct links on 21 January. The US National Strategy for the Arctic, the Implementation Plan for the Strategy, and the report on our progress all gone within a matter of minutes. As I watched more and more links turned red, I frantically combed the internet for archived versions of our country’s most important polar policies.

I had no idea then that this disappearing act had just begun.

Since January, the surge has transformed into a slow, incessant march of deleting datasets, webpages and policies about the Arctic. I now come to expect a weekly email request to replace invalid citations, hoping that someone had the foresight to download statistics about Arctic permafrost thaw or renewable energy in advance of the purge.

i’m not shitting you when i say this. i used to play these wolf3d mods way back when i was a young kid (around 6 or 7) and i didn’t learn until i was a teenager that the man who made them was really an 80 year old ww2 veteran named John Bucksnort. i think he passed away in 2002 but has left an incredible legacy behind of wolfenstein 3d mods and a yahoo page called The Spear of Destiny Fanclub which is defunct now needless to say.

Magic Ranbow Swords (By Potoo Brigham)
Magic Ranbow Swords (By Potoo Brigham)

Hey, check it out! It’s my first solo comic dub and I did all of the voices too!

This comic is part of the wonderful and humorous Growth Spurt AU by the ever-amazing @potoobrigham  ( Fun fact: I’ve been a huge fan of his work ever since I discovered him and his brother’s work on the now-defunct Nintendo DSi service Flipnote Hatena. To come across his art blog years later and then recently get permission to dub his works has been an honor and a dream come true for me. I hope I’ll be able to dub some more of his stuff in the future!

(…But let me sleep first. It’s 2:36 AM and I gotta crash.)

Sonic the Hedgehog is basically some sort of freaky cryptid, isn’t he?

No, I don’t mean because he’s an electric blue hedgehog, though there is that.

I mean… like, back in the day when 2D platformers were all the rage, everybody wanted to be the next Mario. There were about a billion different attempts to manufacture a mascot-driven platformer franchise by corporate decree; some flew high and crashed hard (e.g., Earthworm Jim); some were bad jokes right from the get-go (e.g., Bubsy); and some have just bumbled along doing their thing, no gushing headlines but no hysterical laughter (e.g., Rayman) - and then there’s Sonic.

Sonic is the one mascot-by-committee who’s managed to make good. He has a goofy design, a self-consciously “edgy” personality, and basically nothing to distinguish him from any of dozens of failed efforts, yet everybody loves him. And on top of all that:

a. Most of his output has ranged from mediocre to terrible for longer than the bulk of his current fanbase has been alive - there are literally kids who love Sonic in spite of the fact that his last standout game came out before they were born; and

b.  He’s a console mascot for a defunct console.

… and yet he’s coasted on pure name recognition for decades, and is routinely mentioned in the same breath as mascots like, well, Mario.

Like, I’m not saying it was aliens, but…

‘CyberTown’, originally ‘ColonyCity’ (1997-2012)

Virtual online community begun in 1997, “users were able to have jobs within the community, earning virtual money called CC’s (CityCash) that could be used to buy 3D homes and items. Each user was allowed a free 2D home and could locate it within any of a number of colonies subdivided into neighborhoods and blocks.”

HISTORY MEME → [2/4] Families/Dynasties: House of Romanov

The House of Romanov was the second dynasty, after the House of Rurik, to rule over Russia, and reigned from 1613 until the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II on March 15, 1917, as a result of the February Revolution.

The Romanovs achieved prominence as boyars of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, later the Tsardom of Russia. In 1613, following years of interregnum, the zemsky sobor offered the Russian crown to Mikhail Romanov. He acceded to the throne as Michael I, becoming the first Tsar of Russia from the House of Romanov. His grandson Peter I established the Russian Empire and transformed the country into a continental power through a series of wars and reforms.

The direct male line of the Romanovs came to an end when Elizabeth of Russia died in 1762. After an era of dynastic crisis, the House of Holstein-Gottorp, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg which reigned in Denmark, ascended the throne in 1762 with Peter III, a grandson of Peter I. All rulers from the middle of the 18th century to the revolution of 1917 were descended from that branch. Though officially known as the House of Romanov, these descendants of the Romanov and Oldenburg dynasties are sometimes referred to as Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov.

In early 1917 the Romanov dynasty had 65 members, 18 of whom were killed by the Bolsheviks. The remaining 47 members went into exile abroad. In 1924, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich, the senior, surviving male-line descendant of Alexander II of Russia by primogeniture, claimed the headship of the defunct Imperial House of Russia. Since 1991, the succession to the former Russian throne has been in dispute, largely due to disagreements over the validity of dynasts’ marriages.

We’re playing World of Darkness, and one of the NPC’s who has worked with our gaggle of hunters before requested we investigate some odd (even for this town) disturbances happening at the now-defunct underground facility.

In an attempt to gain more information from the facilities crass AI, I (a nerd with fantastic lying skills) try passing myself off as a member of the facility.

Me: Hi there, name is Finneas Odetta, you see I was away at the time, and I seem to have misplaced my ID card, would you mind providing me with some clearance? *rolls 3 successes*

AI: Welcome back Finneas Odetta, please state your division.

Me: Oh, um, uh…Ares Division…?

GM: ….Motherfucker. You fucking blind guessed one of the five divisions. Mother fucker
