NOW—NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER, DALLAS: Giuseppe Penone Being the River, Repeating the Forest

February 3, 2016

The exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas included work from over five decades in a variety of materials to highlight the development of Giuseppe Penone’s oeuvre. Working in a stunning variety of materials—including clay, wood, stone, metal, plaster, resin, and acacia thorns—the artist makes palpable and present the analogous relationship between nature and art.

In the following conversation, Giuseppe Penone discusses the Nasher exhibition, and his Gagosian Gallery Hong Kong show with Gagosian’s Director Pepi Marchetti Franchi.
__________

PEPI MARCHETTI FRANCHI Being the River, Repeating the Forest represents an important chapter in your exhibition history in the United States. In 1970, your work was included in Information, the legendary exhibition of conceptual art at MoMA. In 1982 Diane Waldman installed your sculpture of an enormous tree that had been stripped of its bark in the Guggenheim rotunda, which was enormously impressive. What are your memories of these past American experiences?

GIUSEPPE PENONE It was curator Kynaston McShine who invited me to participate in Information, which was extraordinary because I was twenty-three years old, and it was the first time I visited New York City, so it was a very formative experience. During that visit, I went to many galleries and was introduced to quite a few people who were very important for the development of my work in a variety of ways. At the time I was in touch with Ileana Sonnabend’s gallery, and one evening she invited me to visit Robert Rauschenberg’s studio. I have a clear memory of this space, which was in a church, and then we went to Rauschenberg’s house, where I met Cy Twombly. Back then, relationships between artists were more direct. The art world was very small and relationships developed easily.

In 1982, Diane Waldman selected my work for an exhibition of Italian art at the Guggenheim Museum, where I had the opportunity to install a 12-meter-tall tree in the center of the museum’s famous rotunda. That was an extraordinary experience, because architecturally, the Guggenheim is such a unique and emblematic place. Being able to install one of my works in the center of that space had great significance for me. These were my first important encounters with America, and since then there have been many others.

PMF The Nasher exhibition is not technically a retrospective but, from a thematic and chronological viewpoint, it very thoroughly maps your practice as an artist. Did exhibiting at this museum, which is dedicated exclusively to sculpture, play a role in the development of the project? Did you want to establish some type of dialogue with the collection or with other works?

Rant 05: Kai is NOT coming to EXO’LUXION - Dallas!!

MMT just announced that Kai will not be able to come to Dallas for EXO’LUXION because of visa delay. MMT also issues their apologies towards the fans saying they are the ones at fault. They also said they’ll compensate those who want a full refund. That being said here’s what I gotta say:

Warning: there’s gonna be some curse words…

First thing first, people need to clam their tits down and stop blaming MMT for this because A) THEY ARE COMING HERE ON A TEMPORARY WORK VISA!!! B) IT’S A PROCESS TO GET A TEMPORARY WORK VISA (research it) C) THEY ARE NOT GOING TO EXPEDITE KAI’S PAPERWORK JUST BECAUSE HE’S FAMOUS!!! And at last, IF HE COMES HERE ON A TOURISM VISA, HE WON’T BE ABLE TO GET PAID OR PERFORM!!!

It’s honestly no one’s fault here. The system to get a visa is long, boring and frustrating. Sure MMT apologize and said it’s their fault but they were probably taking the responsibility of putting the blame on themselves rather than letting others blame SM or Dreammaker.

Here’s the link of the progress, THE BOYS, need of getting a work visa in the states. I’m sure this is the right one.

http://seoul.usembassy.gov/visas_immigrant_visas.html

Also I read online comments saying it’s similar to the system the US use for work visa. Here’s the link of the US system:

https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/employment/temporary.html

You guys gotta understand getting a visa for anything is a PAIN in the ass. I should know, I traveled overseas before! But for a work visa, THAT’S going to take  a bit longer than a normal visa!!! Sure MMT/SM/DREAMMAKER could’ve issues their work visa earlier but do you guys honestly think the boys will have time for it? No. The boys are busy!!

  • Those saying to just postpone the concert, how about no! Because not only will it affect the next concert, but it’ll affect THE WHOLE TOUR IN GENERAL! Also MMT choose those days base on the boy’s SCHEDULE and probably on what THE BOYS DECIDE!!!
  • Those who are mad because they booked hotel, flight and took days off work only to hear that Kai won’t make it and wants MMT to pay for their own bookings….you do know you can still cancel right? Sure you won’t be able to get a refund back for your flight but MOST hotels have free cancellations. And you can always go back to work and pick up shifts! It’s not that hard. But then again, are you REALLY going to ask for a refund when you already spent that much money on flight, hotel and ticket? Probably not, I’m assuming.
  • Those saying to push into the summer, ummm…ARE YOU FUCKING STUPID?! EXO is the most busy during those days and not to mention THEIR comeback, which members have been hinting it’s summer. So it’s either now or never.
  • Those complaining about not getting a extended stage or how poorly MMT managed GA seating or whatnot, SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! All you guys do is FUCKING COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN AND FUCKING COMPLAIN! Kai is probably feeling so shitty right now and we have you people whining over something so fucking dumb.
  • Have you guys ever consider the fact that because this is EXO’s first concert tour in the North America that they rather start out small rather than big? They rather see a full house in a small venue than see an empty house in a big venue. Wouldn’t that just be embarrassing if EXO did their concert at a huge concert venue just to see ONLY half the seats to be sold? If they weren’t, shit I’ll be! Matter of fact, LA and NY tickets aren’t even sold out yet, and here we have people demanding a BIGGER venue!! Get the fuck out of here.

Sure it sucks that Kai won’t be able to come to the concert in Dallas but why point fingers and blame it on MMT? MMT doesn’t control their visa. The embassy do. Was it unprofessional for MMT to announce it two days before the concert? Maybe but guess what sometimes VISA get delayed even on the day of departure. It’s all in the matter of time. It’s similar to Oh My Girl’s situation. They didn’t even have work visas or the correct visa and that’s one of the MANY REASONS why they got HELD back by customs/immigration (besides the fact that no one could get their story straight.) I rather have Kai in Korea, working on getting his visa than him coming to the states only to get denied at customs/immigration.

Whatever. I’m just hoping he gets his visa in time of the Chicago concert but if not then guess what? It’s okay because I’ll still be going to the concert. I’m just glad the whole concert tour isn’t canceled. At least be that appreciated towards them (MMT).
