President Theodore Roosevelt with John Muir at Glacier Point at Yosemite National Park in 1906. In 1903 Roosevelt joined Muir to tour the area and upon Roosevelt’s request spent much time camping in “the real Yosemite” mostly on their own. It was in that time Muir made the case for remedying with federal government protection and management what he viewed was mismanagement by the California state government of the area. It was this encounter that led to Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley being added to what is now Yosemite National Park in 1906 via the Yosemite Recession Bill.
