Lady Reading (1898). Childe Hassam (American, 1859-1935). Watercolor. MFA Boston.
Although Hassam did travel to Paris for the European training that was considered de rigueur for a young American artist at the turn of the century, enrolling in the Academie Julian and coming under the influence of the French Impressionists, he developed a distinctive style of his own when he returned to New York in 1889.
