At some point associating Mariachi with Mexicanity got old for me. I didn’t even grow up listening to it. Later did I learn that it came from the many states that pride themselves in being “white” Mexican states. I mean, when is jarocho, cumbia, marimba, chilenas, and other types of music ever represented as “authentically” Mexican? Even Tequila (Northern Mexican gem) is seen as a truly Mexican liquor but Mezcal and Pulque were seen as inferior for so long until very recently. It’s an interesting lens when you are a southern Mexican. I’m learning though, doing research and analyzing my family and other Mexicans. Any contributions? Opinions?
