Some Thoughts: Storm in the Room

With the reactions post-Storm in the Room, I feel that Steven doesn’t get enough credit. Going to Rose’s Room, searching for answers, and comfort even though he didn’t know that yet, Steven wasn’t setting out to create a perfect mother or project himself the ideal version of Rose. He starts, the moment he enters the room, by saying he knew it wasn’t real.

Everything Steven did with Cloud Rose, everything that happened between them, were reasonable assumptions we could make of Rose. And this is because the Rose we saw was from Steven’s expectations of what she would be like. And Steven was wary about idealising Rose the way the Crystal Gems did. He says this explicitly several times. Also, Steven’s view of Rose was tempered early on by Greg’s stories of her.

So the Rose we see isn’t a sad Steven’s attempt at finding the perfect mother figure. Steven’s attempt at a reasonable and believable portrayal of Rose deserves to be acknowledged. Had it not been the case, the Rose we saw could not have evoked the feelings she did. It’s because of the depth Steven introduced to her from all his memories of her that it was made possible.

And what I want to talk about in this post, is how the images of Rose reflect which narratives he’s channeling as he tries to piece together, quite literally, the image of Rose.

The first appearance of Cloud Rose shows her with messy hair, parts of it stick up and around her. Her facial expressions are often wiggly, for lack of better word, and she shows her thighs a lot more than in the succeeding scenes, either in cross-sitting or running.

This Rose is goofy and funny and casual. And it’s the Rose whom Greg’s stories have constructed in Steven’s memories.

The same scenes we see Rose hitch up her dress in the same way (such as when she’s reading books with Greg on the bed) or similarly goofy, like stopping a ferris wheel with her bare hands, she’s with Greg.

Even the line Steven takes from her video in Lion 3: Straight to Video, about “every X being unique and beautiful” is shot in Greg’s presence. Without realising it, Steven is remembering this image of Rose.

And she cares about Steven. She engages in his interests. It’s not so far a stretch because some episodes back, Bismuth was willing to do the same thing. Rose was a fun person. There’s a running joke that she would have loved cheesy and corny jokes. She probably told a few in her day.

She probably wasn’t always as poised as presented in her portrait. Greg remembers the Rose he changed, when she was starting to understand human beings in earnest and come to terms with how they could exist with gems on the same level.

Rose at that point still didn’t want to talk about her past, and Greg never made her. So Greg and Rose made new memories and didn’t dwell on the old. And those memories were filled with fun and laughter and love.

The moment sobers when it is Rose not Steven, who gestures the latter to sit down and stare at the expanse of clouds.

And we should know that what we’re about to see means something has changed. The first hint is that Rose’s body language changes. She sits perfectly straight, even though she’s cross-sitting the way she was earlier. And we don’t see her legs anymore. Her hair neatens and her expression calms.

What’s more, her hands assume the position Garnet did in Here Comes A Thought in Mindful Education. And that emphasises the kind of role Rose plays in this moment. Steven felt Rose taught Garnet how to manage her feelings, because it was a motherly thing to do. In a very Steven Universe fashion, the music changes from the bright xylophone to a quiet piano music, which is the mark of another Crystal Gem, Pearl.

And when we go back to the senior Crystal Gems and their image of Rose, it is exactly the way she’s presented.

Cloud Rose is a huge presence, with Steven a small child by her side. She speaks deliberately, every word is one of wisdom. She is magnanimous and comforting at the same time.

She tells him, “But we’ve been together the entire time.” And it brings back the idea of how our parents are always with us, and a part of us, because one way or another they’ve left a mark on us.

At the same time though, the similarities of the scenes between this moment and the one at Rose’s Fountain in An Indirect Kiss, lead to the same end.

Rose is viewed as a godly icon, very distant from Steven. She’s not sitting beside him, playing with him, kneeling on the ground anymore. He looks up to her, and he can’t reach her.

In both times, he realises she’s not really there. That he talked to the statue of Rose in the fountain, confided his deepest insecurities about how he didn’t know how to feel about her when everyone else did, parallels the empty image on his phone.

And it segues into the next scene perfectly.

Because Steven doesn’t know how to feel about Rose. Now, he’s more certain than ever that he doesn’t even know who she is. The Rose we see at the end has a blank face, because Steven can’t project anything on it. He’s thinking of Pink Diamond’s shattering, Bismuth, and the Rebellion, and all the people hurt by them.

When he sees Rose, he can no longer see himself, which is why her eyes, one of the facial features most like Steven’s, (next to his nose) are nowhere to be seen.

And this Rose is distant, because there’s no mitigating narrative linking him to her. In the other scenes, the room remained the same, because these stories he was told of Rose and who she was firmly rooted the first two Roses as part of the real Rose’s identity.

This Rose is foreign, because nowhere in those narratives did Steven think it possible to for her to do the things he learned she did.

And in that moment he begins to doubt.

Because he can no longer see the image of his mother, he doesn’t know where he himself stands. A huge part of his identity is being Rose’s son. What happens when the “Rose” part becomes fuzzy, blurry, and unintelligible?

What happens to the Steven?

Notice that this Rose is silent. She offers no response to the accusations Steven hurls at her, about all the people she hurt and her act of leaving them all behind.

At this point, we see the part of Steven that understands Rose is gone. That he’s never going to get these answers and there won’t be an explanation coming from her.

There are some things he’ll never get to hear about, some memories he’ll never know, some experiences he’ll never share with her.

And it’s sad and disheartening and lonely. In losing his idea of Rose, Steven loses a part of his identity. Such that he felt it would be better if he denounced Rose, cutting off the part of himself he didn’t want to think about: That he was created just to fix her mistakes.

It’s then that we see Rose’s face for the first time since we’ve entered the paradigm of Rose-through-Steven’s eyes. Not Greg’s, not the Crystal Gem’s. Because these new things he’s learned about Rose are things the others would never have known without him. How else would they have heard the Diamond’s song of mourning? How would they have known Bismuth was there all along?

And the things Rose said in the tape were meant for Steven, in a space only Steven could find.

The Rose speaking to Steven at the end is the Rose who’s already spoken to Steven directly before, through the tape.

A lot of negative reaction has been given to this moment, because it feels as though the tape absolves Rose of everything she’s done. It doesn’t and I don’t feel that was the point.

The point of her saying that, was to reaffirm Steven’s belief in Steven. To show that it wasn’t about Rose anymore, that Steven’s birth wasn’t about Rose but about him.

And it’s striking that’s the only time we see her face again. Because immediately after, Steven hugs her, and her face is obscured.

That’s Steven’s recognition that he’s never going to hear any other words straight from his mother for him. He understands and he realises that nonetheless, Rose is exerting a presence in his life. He really is always with her and never alone.

The past few episodes and everything leading up to them were about Steven’s realising his mother was still an individual, one who could made mistakes and rash, selfish decisions.

He was afraid that upon realising his mother could be a selfish individual, could do huge selfish things that affected thousands of lives, he feared the act of his birth, the most personal thing about him, was meant to serve her self-interests alone too. He needed a concrete and tangible answer, which was what prompted him to go to the room.

At the end of the episode, he didn’t think that anymore. He knows he has a lot of work ahead in figuring out Rose’s place in his life, but the lingering doubt of the very foundation of his existence is gone.

And because of that, he finally feels comfortable letting her go.

Summary of Chart Types

An astrological chart is a radial diagram of the positions of celestial bodies, generally in geocentric relation to a specific place and time. Each type of chart denotes the disposition of cosmic influences uniquely & for various purposes.

Natal || The natal chart is the primary & fundamental astrological chart, calculated for each individual at their exact moment of birth. It is a permanent representation of one’s psyche & entire being; it indicates essence, personality, behavior, potential, lifestyle, upbringing, & the state of the soul in a broad yet detailed context. It is a tool for self-discovery, growth, & personal progress.

Transits || The word transit refers to the perpetual motion of a celestial body through multiple astrological measures of energy, particularly the Zodiac and the twelve houses. Transits affect everyone all the time, but uniquely per individual natal chart. They indicate general patterns, possibilities, changes, moods, and can even be used to loosely predict future events.

Return || A return takes place when a planet makes a full revolution through the Zodiac back to its natal position. The chart is calculated for the transits of the time when the return is exact. Solar & lunar returns are the most important. They indicate the perpetually evolving nature & personal growth patterns of the psyche, as well as one’s temporary disposition, life path, and problems.

Persona || There is a persona chart for each of the planets; the natal chart can be considered the sun’s persona chart (and it is the most important & most influential). Persona charts are calculated for the moment the sun passed through each other planet’s position. They indicate deeper energies & functions of the planets, further expanding the meaning of the natal chart.

Progressed || The progressed chart is a prognostic method that follows a unique day-to-year calculation; each of an individual’s present years is equal to one progressed day (e.g. the progressed chart for a 26-year-old person would essentially be the transits for 26 days after their birth). It indicates one’s growth & evolution as a person in a general sense & how they process experiences.

Harmonic || There are theoretically an infinite number of different harmonic charts, but the premise is that there is a harmonic for each aspect. The natal chart is divided by the number that creates an aspect’s angle, compressed, and then re-expanded to form a regular 360 degree chart. It reveals abstruse details about the theme/subject related to the original number’s symbolism.

Draconic || The Draconic chart is calculated by dialing a person’s natal placements back through the Zodiac until the North Node is at zero degrees in Aries. This chart is labelled the “soul chart” & is meant to represent a person’s purest or highest evolution of self, or some say it’s supposedly the natal chart they had in their previous incarnation. It is used relatively infrequently.

Midpoints || The points that lie directly between two celestial bodies (called “midpoints”) are considered to be very sensitive, receptive areas. Calculating midpoints adds another dimension or volume of archetypal/energetic meaning to the natal chart (or whatever other chart they are brought into). They must be activated by transits, synastry, or natal aspects in order to be relevant.

Uranian || Uranian astrology is a relatively new branch of the subject, less than a century old, which uses midpoints as its primary indicator of energetic or archetypal manifestation. It is considered a more complicated & more detailed yet somewhat unreliable/unfounded method of calculating charts (mainly natal charts), and it is not widely practiced as far as I can tell.

Composite || Composition is a method of relational astrology that uses the midpoints between all of the placements in two individuals’ natal charts to illustrate the nature, essence, disposition, inclinations, tendencies, potential, and general traits of their relationship. As the combination of what represents two different people, it can also indicate a lot about things they create together.

Davison || The Davison chart is another method of relational astrology that uses midpoints, but unlike the composite chart, it uses the date, time, and location that lies directly between the birth of two individuals’. It is essentially the “natal chart of the relationship.” It primarily indicates the organic basis of the relationship & its highest, most profound possible benefit for both parties.

Synastry || Synastry is the comparison of two natal charts by overlaying one upon the other. The Zodiac is the foundation of synastry; the positions of each individuals’ planets & houses are placed upon it simultaneously. This indicates every detail of their relationship, the entire exchange of energy between them, nearly every possible quality, flaw, problem, & benefit of their connection.

Can herpes affect my ability to have a child?

Someone asked us:

Can herpes affect my ability to have a child?

Genital herpes shouldn’t affect your ability to get pregnant, and people with herpes who get pregnant have healthy pregnancies, births, and babies all the time. But there are extra precautions you can take to make sure you don’t pass herpes on to your baby.

If you already have herpes at the time you get pregnant, the risk to your baby is low. You and your doctor or nurse will keep an eye out for herpes outbreaks during pregnancy, and your doctor may recommend taking some medicine to reduce and prevent outbreaks.

If you have herpes sores on your genitals when you go into labor, it’s possible to spread it to your baby in childbirth. So your doctor may recommend a C-section to avoid that. When a newborn baby gets herpes it can cause certain eye problems or brain damage. So it’s important to tell your doctor or nurse if you have genital herpes or notice any herpes symptoms during pregnancy. Many people have no idea that they have herpes, so talk with your doctor about getting tested for herpes when you’re pregnant.

If you’re pregnant and you don’t have herpes but your partner does (or they think they might), it’s really important to use condoms and dental dams anytime you have vaginal, anal, or oral sex during your pregnancy. It’s also really important to talk with a doctor or nurse about it. They may recommend that you avoid sex during your third trimester. They may also have your partner take medicine to lower the chances of them spreading herpes to you throughout your pregnancy.

Taking serious precautions is important because getting herpes when you’re already pregnant can lead to premature birth or even miscarriage — and the risk of problems increases the later you are in your pregnancy. If you’re planning a pregnancy, it’s a good idea to talk with a doctor or nurse about STD testing and other pre-pregnancy health steps you can take. You can get testing and treatment for STDs, and other family planning help, at your nearest Planned Parenthood health center.

Watch a Male Seahorse Give Birth to Hundreds of Babies

Male seahorses are the ones who carry children and give birth. And when they do, they can produce up to 2,000 babies at one time.

anonymous asked:

Founders trio being allowed to see their child after labor for the first time! And maybe them holding them

awww

Hashirama

•Probably crying tears of joy. Tears are just spilling down his cheeks like omg he is so happy. He probably cried when he found out his s/o was pregnant in the first place, so finally getting to see his baby? He’s gonna cry a lot

•He’s just smiling so hard. Huge grin. His face is going to hurt. He’s so excited he’s just grinning down at his baby while he holds them

•Hashirama does a lot of that forehead touching stuff. Just wants to pick up his baby and touch foreheads or NOSE TOUCHING. HE’D TOUCH HIS NOSE TO HIS LITTLE BABY’S NOSE AWWWW. He can’t stop touching them. He knows he has to be gentle, but he just wants to bop his little baby’s nose and caress their face and play with the tuft of hair on their head

•Just can’t stop talking to/about his baby. “Look at him/her! So small! You’re so beautiful…” With those tears still in his eyes

•He’s very generous and selfless though, no matter how much he’d like to hold his baby for hours. He’ll let everyone else get their turn, especially his s/o. If anything, no matter how excited and overwhelmed he is, he wants his s/o to hold and spend time with their baby too. They’re the ones who pushed the kid out, they deserve quality time together

Tobirama

•Tobirama’s honestly not going to be able to process the exhilaration of being a dad at first because he was so stressed about the birthing in the first place. Afterward though, like, the second he sees his baby, he’s just a little shook

•He won’t really know what to do when he’s holding his baby, but he’s probably not going to let go. Just going to be super possessive once he realizes this is his baby he’s holding and omg he’s a dad! and omg his baby is so beautiful! wow! Can’t believe he made this little thing

•It’s actually a bit of a problem how unwilling he is to let go of his baby once he’s holding them. He’ll even hesitate to hand the baby over to his s/o. He just needs to hold them and soak in this new reality. No one touch his baby. It’s his baby.

•He’ll be a little nervous probably? He knows how to hold a baby, but he’s just so paranoid. Doesn’t want to drop his baby, and doesn’t want anyone else holding his baby either in case they drop them. Overprotective from the start tbh. Typical Tobirama

•Just spends a lot of time staring and examining them, not saying a word, the smallest of smiles on his lips every so often

•The cutest moment will probably be when his baby stops crying and gets adventurous, starts reaching for things, and grabs his finger and holds it in their little chubby fingers. Tobirama will die

Madara

•You won’t see the eagerness or elation in his voice or expression, but it’s in his eyes. And sometimes, a short smile will break his face

•There’s nothing he’d enjoy more than seeing those little eyes peel open and watching dark Uchiha orbs stare back at him. Madara is just proud. He made this little thing. It’s part of him. He has a child now. A child to call his own

•Very proud of his s/o too. Will probably postpone holding the baby for too long in favor of bringing them over to his s/o and placing the baby in their arms. He’ll make an offhand comment to his s/o, like “You did it, ______” with an unusually soft tone

•Madara is also rather stubborn, and won’t let anyone hold the baby except him and his s/o

•He’s probably happiest letting his s/o hold their baby while he leans over and watches. It’s later at home, during nights the baby cries and Madara goes to soothe them so his s/o doesn’t have to get up, that Madara does most of the holding and bonding with his baby
