In a lot of ways, Kate and I have really grown up in this industry together; we’ve been a support mechanism for each other for such a long period of time. We’ve been there for each other and helped guide each other.
“(Y/N)!” You shut your locker and turn to see Jessica running towards you. “Your boyfriend got in a fight with Alex, come on.”
“We’re just friends,” you mumble, a blush creeping up your cheeks as you hurriedly follow after her.
“Yeah, and I’m not brown,” she laughs, stopping outside the library. “They’re both in here with the honor board. Justin and them are their way here, too.”
“Did you see it? The fight?” You begin to nervously pull at the ends of your hair.
“Just the last minute or so,” Justin, Zach and Jeff are almost to where you two are standing. “It was bad, (Y/N). Monty’s really lucky Mr. Porter didn’t decide to call the police.”
“What was it even about, do you know?” You ask her.
“The fight?” Zach asks before Jessica can respond.
You just nod.
“You should Cruz yourself,” Justin smirks while the rest of the group laughs a little.
“For people who aren’t dating he sure is defensive over you,” Jeff laughs.
“Because we’re friends,” you mumble, looking up at the sound of the library door opening.
Alex Standall walks out first, your hand covering your mouth at the sight of his face. One cheek was swelled to an exhorbitant amount, his mouth was busted to hell and back, one black eye and the bridge of his nose was split open. What was so important that Monty almost literally broke Alex’s face.
Mr. Porter and the honor board follow behind Alex, Montgomery bringing up the rear. The scowl etched into his face immediately vanishes at the sight of you.
“There’s my favorite girl,” he grins at you, moving to pull you into his side.
Your heart ached at his words. Yes, you were his best friend and therefore favorite girl, but you wanted so badly to be more than his best friend. You and Monty have had a very flirty friendship for almost three years now, and while you were both completely smitten with each other, neither one of you could see it. Both too scared to take one step further for fear of ruining what you guys have.
“Stop,” you grab his face with both hands, pulling him down from his towering height. You proceed to check to see if there’s any damage like to Alex’s face, even though you can clearly see there’s not. “Hands.”
“They’re fine, princess,” he rolls his eyes, but holds up his hands in front of you anyways.
“That’s definitely not fine!” You smack his chest, his knuckles ripped and busted and bleeding. “You have a tournament Saturday you idiot! How do you plan on batting with your hands like this?”
“Date already,” Zach say through one of those horrible fake coughs.
“How many times do we have to say we’re just friends, Dempsey?” Monty rolls his eyes, your heart sinking yet again.
“You’d be perfect together,” Jess mumbles before smiling brightly. “Anyway, party at my house tonight. (Y/N), it is a requirement you be there. I will go full Montgomery de la Cruz on you if you’re not there.”
“Okay, okay I’ll be there,” you laugh.
“I’m still taking you home, right?” Monty asks you, slinging his arm across your shoulders.
You ignore everyone else’s pointed looks and smirks, nodding up at him. You both say your goodbyes and start heading outside.
“Monty, what was the fight over?” You wait until your outside to ask.
“It doesn’t matter,” you don’t miss the way his arm tightens around you, bringing you closer. “It’s over now.”
It’s not until you arrive at the Jeep that you start pushing the subject.
“Come on, Mont, just tell me,” his hands grip the steering wheel, his knuckles reopening. “You practically bashed his head in, it was obviously important, so you might as well tell me.”
He sits in silence for so long you don’t think he’s going to answer, but he finally does, parked in front of your house.
“He said things about you, (Y/N),” he says quietly, “things that no one has the right to say about you. He doesn’t get to objectify you and have no consequences.”
“You almost broke Alex’s face because he objectified me?” You ask incredulously.
“Sometimes it amazes me that you just don’t see it,” he lets out a short laugh, finally unlocking the doors. “I mean the feelings I have for you….I gotta go princess, I’ll see you at the party tonight.”
You still had more questions, but you also knew that when Monty shut down, he was done. You spent the next couple hours just thinking about what he’d said, what he possibly could’ve meant. Eventually though, you push it out of your mind and get ready for the party.
“Jess!” You yell over the music, trying to get your friends attention. “Have you seen Monty?”
“He’s on the balcony outside my room,” she hands me a red cup, filled with alcohol no doubt. “You’re gonna need this if you’re planning on talking to him about what I think you are.”
“Thanks,” you nod, also knowing you’d need a little extra courage. You drain the cup on the way up the stairs, quietly walking into Jess’s room. “Mont?” You open the door to the balcony, sitting down next to him.
“I was wondering when you’d get here,” he says quietly, gazing up at the stars. “I guess we have a lot to talk about, yeah?”
“Yeah,” you mumble, bringing your knees to your chest and wrapping your arms around them. “You go first.”
“Always were a bit of a baby, baby,” he looks over at you, a small smile on his face. “I’m just gonna get straight to the point,” he turns to face you completely, and you sit normal, just looking at him across from you. “I think I’m in love with you, (Y/N), and I have been for awhile. I was just so scared of saying the wrong thing and then suddenly one of the best friendships I’ve ever had is now awkward and different.”
You sit in stunned silence. Even mulling over his words from earlier, you never actually expected this.
He starts to panic because of your silence and starts rambling.
“I obviously misread all our flirting, I guess it was just me. I knew I shouldn’t of said-”
You practically launch yourself at him, crashing your lips to his and cutting him off.
“I think I’m in love with you too,” you say breathlessly, reattaching your lips almost instantly.
It’s hard to kiss when your both smiling however, and end up just resting your forehead against his, waaaay happier than you thought possible.
I French-fried my phone. What else can I do? I mean, really, it's technology's fault. It is turning us against each other! Caroline, I swear. I will never accidentally say anything about you again that I never meant.
I have to get ready for work, it's fine.
stop saying that, please stop saying it's fine! Fine doesn't mean fine. The scale goes: great, good, okay, not okay, I hate you, fine. If fine meant fine that'd be great, but it doesn't, okay?!
You're right, It's not fine. It's sucks, I'm hurt. You're the one person I care most about.
No, you are the one person I care most about!
Well, right now, it doesn't feel that way.
It has to feel that way! You are my best friend, Caroline. I love you! ... Oh my god, now I'm really gonna throw up.
Max, is that the first time you said, 'I love you'?
Don't look at me, I'm embarrassed... Now what do we do?
so you're not sick of me?
you are the only person in the entire world I am not sick of.
