On this day in 2012, Romain Grosjean triggered a massive crash involving 5 drivers including championship contender Fernando Alonso after Romain squeezed Lewis Hamilton in the run down to turn 1 leaving him with no where to go except for into other drivers. Romain recieved a one-race ban, and was fined €50,000 for his actions.
On this day in 1998, a memorable Belgian Grand Prix started in chaos as David Coulthard lost control of his car and. triggered an almighty pileup involving 13 drivers, which promptly red-flagged the race. The race began to level out and saw Michael Schumacher take a commanding lead over the rest of the field. As he approached David Coulthard to overlap him, Michael plowed unsighted into the back of David’s car forcing Schumacher to retire. This left the two Jordans of Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher in 1st and 2nd place. After much deliberating over the team radio, Damon convinced Eddie Jordan to call team orders to Ralf Schumacher to ensure a 1-2 finish for the team, and not risk the two teammates crashing each other out. This would be Damon Hill’s last victory of his career.
On this day in 1982 Gilles Villeneuve, of Berthierville Québec, died after an accident during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. He was 32. Villeneuve raced for 5 years on the Formula One circuit with 6 wins and 13 trips to the podium. He finished second to his teammate Jody Scheckter for the 1979 championship.
