The Bak'tun shift in the Maya calendar today/tomorrow is only significant if you want to commemorate it by coordinating an effort to capture/sacrifice your city’s rival’s Ahau. Or you could commemorate it with ritual blood sacrifice.
Or make this Bak'tun a time to stop misrepresenting another culture’s traditions.
The end of the 13th Baktun is on December 21, 2012. It will be the beginning of the 14th Baktun. A Baktun is 144,000 days. While many people are basing their apocalypse theories on this being the end of the world, it is supposed to also be a cycle – hence the spiral pattern that expands and recedes. I did a lot of research for it. Most of the glyphs are original but I did use the “galactic butterfly” (AKA “Hanab Ku”) symbol in the middle, the Mayan numbers, and one of the dragons is an old sculpture.
Tomorrow is the completion of thirteen Baktuns since the date of creation in the Mayan longcount calendar. They never believed this was the end of the world.
Furthermore, THE MAYA STILL EXIST. So stop pretending they’re some long dead civilization, they are real, living, breathing people and if you have questions about their culture maybe you should ask them instead of whatever new agey white spiritual leader CHARLATAN you are listening to. These Maya can’t get to their sacred sites to celebrate the completion of the Baktun because too many Americans are buying tickets, driving up prices, and driving out the cultural descendants so they can burn incense and harm ancient sites.
Guatemala’s Mayan people accused the government and tour groups on Wednesday of perpetuating the myth that their calendar foresees the imminent end of the world for monetary gain.
“We are speaking out against deceit, lies and twisting of the truth, and turning us into folklore-for-profit. They are not telling the truth about time cycles,” charged Felipe Gomez, leader of the Maya alliance Oxlaljuj Ajpop.
Several films and documentaries have promoted the idea that the ancient Mayan calendar predicts that doomsday is less than two months away, on December 21, 2012.
The Culture Ministry is hosting a massive event in Guatemala City – which as many as 90,000 people are expected to attend – just in case the world actually does end, while tour groups are promoting doomsday-themed getaways.
Maya leader Gomez urged the Tourism Institute to rethink the doomsday celebration, which he criticized as a “show” that was disrespectful to Mayan culture.
Experts say that for the Maya, all that ends in 2012 is one of their calendar cycles, not the world.
Gomez’s group issued a statement saying that the new Maya time cycle simply “means there will be big changes on the personal, family and community level, so that there is harmony and balance between mankind and nature.”
Oxlajuj Ajpop is holding events it considers sacred in five cities to mark the event and Gomez said the Culture Ministry would be wise to throw its support behind their real celebrations.
More than half of Guatemala’s population of nearly 15 million are from indigenous groups of Mayan descent.
The Mayan calendar has 18 months of 20 days each plus a sacred month, “Wayeb,” of five days. “B'aktun” is the larget unit in the time cycle system, and is about 400 years. The broader era spans 13 B'aktun, or about 5,200 years.
The Mayan culture enjoyed a golden age between 250 AD and 900 AD.
As a note: the b'ak'tun rolls over at 20, not 13. The journalist didn’t do their research
As the clock currently reads 13 Baktun 4 Ahau 3 Kankin, or December 21, 2012 AD, we should bring back to our attention the great cycles of time that concentrate in this unique moment: The Galactic Alignment, when the Winter Solstice Sun aligns with the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Our Star, the Sun, will not be at its closest to that point for another 200 years or so. The conjunction of the winter solstice sunrise with the galactic equator happens every 25,627 years, and lasts for a period of 36 years; this period started in 1980, and it will end in 2016. We should use such times to synchronize our being with the cosmic plan and walk the path towards enlightenment. The change in consciousness that we are currently living is about us heaving a greater understanding of each other, and of everything that surrounds us. The new human being has to permeate this world with love, beauty and compassion; our attitude towards life has to be more responsible on all levels of existence. Simultaneously, we should be aware of the fact that our life has a meaning and a purpose, so don’t waste it in fear, confusion and ignorance. If we are the New Beings then it is time for us to birth a new world that encompasses the principles of cooperation and unity. Happy Solstice Day and don’t forget to create eternity out of every moment of your life! The time for this is now.
I’m really upset that the whole ‘end of the world’ thing has gotten out of hand. Because a LIE has been blown out of proportion now the government isn’t allowing the estimated 800,000 Maya to perform their religious rituals and prayers for the new Baktun. The Mayans will be allowed to visit their OWN sites but will have to pay like the visitors.
