Killian Jones, Emma Swan and the nuances of deeply emotional love-making.

A psychologist’s POV on why this particular couple hinting at sex riled up an entire fandom.

So what was it?

We have all been exposed to TV sex and (I assume) most of us have been exposed to a certain degree of personal intimacy with a significant other in our lifetimes. I’ve been witness to some unbelievably explicit TV sex myself, but I can say that not once before in my life, has the notion of an OTP “getting it on” made me daydream anywhere near as hard as Hook and Emma did last night with only the hint of post-climatic morning sex taking place on a kitchen table. I was emotional. (A bit hot n’ bothered too, but mostly emotional).

But why? What is so different about these two??

When we think about how things got started for this particular couple, it’s been a struggle for both, one in which many of us can maybe relate. Maybe you’re the lonely girl who lost faith? The guy who lost everything and is terrified of ever embracing love again? Maybe you’re both. all I can say is, we as humans have ALL felt this way, some maybe on one particular situation and some others could be facing ongoing faith trials in their lives. Regardless, seeing that an orphan and a bucaneer can find home, stability, and happiness is an overwhelming slap in the face. It’s super easy to throw the towel in; staying on the road and fighting, that’s what’s hard!! So to find these two connect that way, it’s almost like finding our own answers on the pages of a book. It’s almost therapeutic (though it would be completely unprofessional of me to say CS is a replacement for therapy, should you need it, lol), and this reaches very deep for some and many.

Now about the sex… why does this particular fandom crave to see them show at least a certain degree of sexual intimacy?

Killian’s question “Have you ever been in love?”, comes into play here. Have you ever been in love? because if you have, you will know very well how sex can change and solidify a bond between two people who are already developing such a strong connection. On a chemical POV, sex is basically a survival tool, designed to make us want it to the point of it being damn near unstoppable and thus guaranteeing reproduction. But there is something more: The bonding. The magic of Oxytocin, where your brain releases such unbelievable amounts of the stuff you find yourself suddenly unable to be without that other person. You find yourself even MORE joined together after sex than you did before, even when you didn’t think it was possible.

There is a huge huge HUUUUGE difference between the gratifying satisfaction that comes from casual sex and the overwhelming sense of completeness, peace and togetherness that derives from lovemaking, both individually and as a couple. Just think about it for a second: Love-MAKING. You are MAKING love. Making it. You are enacting love with all you have: Your body, your soul, your everything. You can only say “I love you” so many times before you feel like those words alone just don’t cut it: You want to become that person, be a part of his or her body, to be as close together as you possibly can, to find a way for your souls to commingle and embrace without the limitations of physicality. Is there physical desire though? Of course there is, we are also biological beings with a libido that needs a release. But when you are in love, there is another fuel behind it, a fuel that is not necessarily derived from just the attraction of “banging a hot guy or girl”. No matter what that person has done or what he/she looks like, you desire that person. You start to overlook the flaws, physical or character-wise, and you look deeply, into that person’s very soul, the soul you want to touch and be a part of… the person you LOVE.

So have you ever been in love? Have you ever made love, or been made love to? If not, you will know it when it happens to you… and if you have, then you will know exactly what I’m talking about.

Killian Jones was the first to fall in love in this situation. He suddenly found himself being rescued from a darkness he never believed could be overcome and there, at the end of a dark, dark tunnel, stood one Emma Swan. He felt intrigued and followed her into the light, only to find himself helplessly drawn to her on a much deeper, spiritual level. His way of proving himself to win the heart of the woman he now unquestionably loved was through loyalty. Unbarred, undeniable loyalty. And for a woman who was used to abandonment, finding a solid rock beside her who would be there for her regardless of the consequences was easily the biggest brownie point in her Captain Hook tally. Now they’re together, finding ways of fighting for that love and to keep it strong, burning hot and always beautiful.

Love-making is the next logical step; these two kids have desire for one another (that they’ve actually had for a long, long time) and while I am sure that they have already done the deed before the glorious little nuance from last night’s show, for us to witness that intimacy, that strength and that bond, is almost a reminder that there is a love strong enough for all of us, and that when we do find it, we have to hold on to it, tooth and nail, because regardless of it being an ever after love or a love affair that lasts less than what you hoped for, true love is solidified through unstoppable, devoted, deeply emotional and romantic sex, whether it’s slow and passionate or fast paced and fiery. It’s just that last bridge to cross to entirely become one with that other soul you love so much.

So there it is, kids. Hook and Emma love each other. And to many of us, this almost flawless, picture perfect version of what love could be (and actually really is with all it’s ups and downs and fights and blowouts and great, great sex) is what we all aspire to achieve at some point with our significant other. And what a fine example they are!!!!

Writing Large Casts of Characters

Okay, so it came to my attention recently that not all writers write with gigantuan casts of characters like I do. So I thought I’d share my experiences with this kind of writing and hopefully help some people out?

Quick summary: I’ve got three different stories that are my main three works. My main novel is pretty much finalized at 96K words, a sci-fi story with eight main characters (a crazy scientist and her daughter are the two real mains, but all the other characters play their roles as well).
I have a second story that I wrote for NaNoWriMo 2016 that I have since not polished like at all that’s at 52K. I have managed my characters a bit better this time, but there’s still lots: main hero named Ash, her partner Zack, Satan, and the head of T.R.E.E. Plus, you know…various demon characters. It may not sound like a lot, but I have planned this to be a seven book series so I will be working with all them a lot
Finally, I have a story that follows Emma Walker as she travels the USA on a one-woman Humans of New York-esque adventure. That means she talks to people and listens to their stories so she can tell them on her blog. So, you see, I have to create a significant amount of characters for her to talk to; the story is kind of at a standstill right now around 40K.

The key to keeping all your characters straight is, of course, making them all unique. For my sci-fi story, each character has a different superpower. In my NaNo project, half the characters are demons, skeletons, etc. Stories Told For Free gives every character some sort of trait that their story goes off of (family members, personal fears, freckles).

But what I want to recommend to you is that you make your characters unique to the reader. As the writer, you have the ability to go back and fact-check and look back to see what you wrote. Do it shamelessly; consistency is important.
But making them unique to your reader takes a bit more thinking. You have to think of things from a reader standpoint. What will make readers go, “Oh, yeah, that guy, I remember that guy.” ?

A few things:
Their relationship to the other characters / your main. If there is a side character never has a word of dialogue but your main’s entire internal dialogue whenever they’re around is, That kid bullied me in fifth grade, I haven’t talked to them in six years, I still remember how they made me cry on the first day of school then we are going to remember them.
Physical features. An oldie but a goodie. One of my characters in the sci-fi novel has burn scars up and down his arms; he controls fire. Another (a telekinetic) has long, thin fingers. See, their powers aren’t enough–although they certainly help. You have to be sure to develop your characters fully, and physical features are part of that.
Accents and catchphrases. I’ve just recently been working on finetuning my dialogue, and let me tell you: it makes a WORLD of difference in improving your narration. Apostrophes and repetition are really tiny details, but it can really capture your reader’s attention and spark memories.
Their impact on your characters / your main. The people that Emma Walker talks to always leave some sort of impact on her, they leave some memory of themselves in her mind. If written correctly, the memories I give my character will be the same memories that stick in my reader’s mind.
Objects that your reader can associate with that character. One of my sci-fi characters fights with a kitchen knife. Random characters in Stories Told for Free may have a charm bracelet, or a meaningful tattoo. Each demon in my NaNo project has a different combination of skin color and scale color.

These are just a few ways that you can further develop your individual characters if you are writing a ton of them. I wish you all the luck in the world, and I hope this helped! Happy writing.

Hamwriters’ Write-a-thon: Lit Day (3)

Pairing: Daveed Diggs x Reader

Word Count: 4,657 (Am I extra, or what?)

Trigger Warnings: Character deaths, pining, angst CENTRAL (hang on guys, we’re going for a ride)

A/N: This is my favorite fic that I’ve written for the write-a-thon, so I hope y’all like it. It’s based on a book called Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I had to read it for school, and I absolutely love it. I definitely suggest reading it. (Forgive me for any errors, I just wanted to get this posted in time, haha.)

“Can you pull over?”

You turned to look at his expressionless face. “What?”

“I’m sorry. I just need to get out.”

You analyzed him carefully before pulling over. He unbuckled his seatbelt and leapt out of the car before you had the chance to ask him what was wrong (besides the inevitable). You allowed him to pace in front of the car as you leaned forward, placing you head on your arms that were rested atop the steering wheel. You stared at your thighs with a grimace on your lips. Soon, there’d be nothing left of either of you.

That’s when you heard the first scream.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, @ive-always-been-a-pirate!!! I hope you have an absolutely fantastic, amazing day, because you are one of the sweetest peeps out there and deserve it. Here’s a quick little Parks & Rec AU to celebrate!! (because the only thing possibly more perfect than CS is Ben & Leslie) HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

Nothing infuriated Emma Swan more than Killian Jones.

She hated him the minute he waltzed into her department, announcing that Storybrooke was basically bankrupt and that he and his friend were there to make sure that didn’t happen. Which, in hindsight, sounds like a good thing, but not when doing so meant slashing half of the parks department’s budget. As Director of said department, how could she be okay with that?

“It’s not just us, Emma, it’s everyone,” her deputy, David, reminded her.

She groaned in response.

“Would you rather the city went broke?”

She hated that sinful British accent of his, and the way his dark hair sometimes fell in his blue eyes, and how that scruff-covered jaw was just begging for someone to run a thumb across it. Those were the things she noticed when he took her out for a drink in an attempt to assuage her regarding the coming changes.

And that he was annoyingly charming, and funny, and flirtatious, and unfortunately, he too wanted to do the most good for the most people.

“Why is it you went into parks, Swan? Someone as fierce as you seems more fit for politics.”

She snorted, then shrugged. “I mean, I’ve thought about it. Running for office. I’d love to. But then I had my son, and I really wanted to make sure that he always had a safe place to play and have adventures. So this was kind of logical.”

He took a sip of his rum, swallowed, then looked up at her. “No, that’s not all, is it?”

“Beg your pardon?”

(This was when she learned she hated how well he could read her.)

I used to think of actors/actresses & musicians as a “different breed”. I pegged their lives as more significant and purposeful than mine. My mind was unable to comprehend that they’re ordinary people who are living out their dreams. These specific people played a huge role in helping me see celebrities as they are…people. I no longer think of them as a “different breed”. They’re people just like me, and I now feel dumb for ever thinking otherwise. Knowing that I am not all that different from these people has allowed me to learn from them as I would any other person. Halsey and Logic taught me that I should always stand up for what I believe in, no matter how anyone else reacts. Demi and Zendaya showed me that confidence comes from within & once I find it my life will become increasingly better. Jennifer reminded me to not take life too seriously and not be afraid to laugh often. Selena taught me to be kind, always, because kindness truly goes a long way, and to speak gently because words are powerful & they have a lasting impact on whoever hears them. Froy and Harry showed me that I should always be myself, whether that be awkward or shy or emotional, because only good and happiness can come from loving yourself for who you are and no one wants to go through life regretting hiding their way to happiness. They also taught me to embrace everything I am and not be afraid to express my feelings. Emma reminded me to speak up, fight for change, ask for respect, have respect for myself, and live graciously. These people have given me so much inspiration and motivation to live a life I love and leave with no regrets of the things I said and did. They helped me through some of my darkest days and continue to fuel my aspirations. I can’t thank them enough. From believing my life was nothing compared to theirs to accepting advice they’re giving and learning from their experiences as well as my own. I owe a great deal of my healing and journey motivation to these people. Bless their hearts for being who they are & I hope they all know how many people they’re helping just by being themselves. Thank you, you lovely people💚 forever wishing i could call you friends, but ‘beautiful people’ will do xx

This little (SPOILERY, SPECULATION) drabble thing is dedicated to my freaking out and time zone buddy Selina @captainwiley . Because we love to kill ourselves with feels and never go to sleep on time. ❤️

He’s nervous. More nervous than he can remember being in his two hundred plus years. He remembers the time before his possible designation as lieutenant. The memory of bringing Milah on the ship for the first time is still clear in his mind but the nerves he felt back then were child’s play in comparison to the knot in his stomach, the slight tremble in his hand, the dryness in his throat he is feeling right now.

It’s strange because at the time those things felt so determining. For a while, he thought being the obedient lieutenant of his captain brother was his duty, his calling, the thing he was going to be the rest of his life. Then it seemed as if he was going to succeed in running away with Milah, as if he was going to manage to spend the rest of his life sailing across the seas with her. Life intervened each time, tore his plans apart time after time, crushed his hopes and broke his heart until a pile of shards was left.

So much heartbreak and yet… she has managed to glue everything back together and to make him believe again.

Flufflet #8 for @lifeinahole27 as a reward for writing her CSBB!

“I want to learn how to cook,” Swan said, staring at her plate.

Killian frowned. “You can cook, as evidenced by the meal in front of us.” Admittedly, it was a simple meal; baked chicken breasts and steamed vegetables. But there was certainly nothing wrong with it.

“Not like that,” she said sadly. “Just … like, for my parents’ potluck this weekend, you know my mom’s gonna make something delicious, and Regina will bring her lasagna. Even Belle and Zelena will bring something great, and they didn’t even used to cook in the Enchanted Forest and Oz or whatever.”

Privately, he thought that Belle and Zelena’s culinary skills were serviceable at best, but he understood. When Emma was tasked with bringing food to an event, she usually either volunteered to bring wine, or she ran to the market for pre-made desserts.

“You know it doesn’t upset me,” he said slowly. “And my own skill in the kitchen isn’t exactly anything to boast about. But if it bothers you, perhaps we should both learn together.”

“You’d want to?” He nodded. “Okay, well … I guess I’ll look into it.”

Killian had imagined that the most difficult part of learning to cook would be actually learning to cook. Instead, it took time to figure out the right way to learn.

Googles provided recipes and so-called foolproof methods, but everything seemed to end a little bit disastrously. Food burned, sauces did not come together, and nothing tasted any better than what they already knew how to make.

Next, they resorted to physical recipe books, which, being old-fashioned, he assumed would be much better than whatever the computer could provide. But if anything, the books were less helpful, and for the first time since encountering a computer, Killian had to admit there were significant benefits to being able to see images and watch recordings.

And actual in-person classes might have been helpful, but after just one down in Augusta, Swan ruled them out completely. He had no qualms with the decision; the instructor had been rude and insensitive (almost certainly unintentionally, but rude and insensitive nonetheless) about Killian’s disability, and it had ruined the entire experience. Neither he nor Emma could concentrate on or retain any of the lesson, and while he would do anything Emma asked of him, he was relieved that she had no desire to put him through such a humiliating experience again.

“I give up,” Emma said the next evening. She was staring at all the cookware and utensils she’d purchased to facilitate the process. “This was a huge waste of time and money.”

He rubbed her shoulder affectionately. “My love, I will not see you defeated in this way.” She snorted skeptically. “I mean it. You’re the Savior, Swan. You’ve never failed before, and you certainly won’t now.”

“What else is left to try, though? I’ve checked every website I can find about learning how to cook, and I am not trying a class again. Not after that.”

“Why don’t we take a break from this?” he suggested. “I’ll see what I can suss out, and we’ll try again then.”

She sighed. “Yeah, okay.”

He’d had to admit that he’d gone to Snow for help, but Emma hadn’t been too upset when he’d passed on the suggestion. In fact, she’d been intrigued and immediately went to the computer to check the Google.

Two weeks later, a box arrived on their front step. Inside were all the ingredients for three meals for the two of them to try, and detailed instructions.

Emma was still nervous, and truth be told, so was he. This didn’t feel much easier than simply finding recipes on Google, and since there was no instructor to guide them, it didn’t seem as though it would be as effective as an in-person lesson. But Swan had done a little research before signing up for the service, and it seemed as though it would be worth a try.

They picked the easiest-looking recipe, set up all the ingredients and equipment, pre-heated the oven, and took a deep breath.

The kitchen was a mess by the time they were done, there were some steps Swan had to take over because they required two hands, and they got in each other’s way more than once, but within an hour, they were sitting at the table to try their meal. It didn’t look nearly as beautiful as the image on the instructions did, but it smelled appetizing.

“Here goes,” Swan said anxiously before taking a bite. He watched as she did, and her eyes widened in surprise. “This is actually good,” she said, mouth still full.

He took a bite of his own serving. It was good. They’d both questioned the seemingly high number of times the recipe instructed them to season with salt and pepper, but now he understood why so many of their attempted meals were so bland. And the clear instructions meant that the meat was cooked perfectly–not underdone or burnt–and the sauce had come together perfectly.

He would have been embarrassed at how quickly they polished off the meal, but it didn’t matter. What mattered was the brilliant smile on his wife’s face.

The other two dishes went much the same way. Without needing to talk about it, Emma set up delivery every other week, for when they didn’t have Henry.

It was enjoyable to work together to make each meal, but as they mastered more and more skills, the dynamic changed a bit. Some nights, Emma would insist on cooking on her own, and it was worth it to see how excited she was that she was making such a delicious meal without assistance. And other nights, he would shoo her out of the kitchen. He’d always been extremely adaptable, and before long, there was not a single step that slowed him down, even with one hand and a hook.

He almost wanted to go back to Augusta and embarrass the cooking instructor, but to do so, he’d have to pay for the privilege. No thank you.

But then life picked up a bit, and they found themselves wanting to return to recipes they’d tried before instead of new ones. And so they went down deliveries once a month, before canceling altogether.

But the skills remained. They had all the recipes from the meal delivery service, but now they each felt confident enough to try recipes from the books they’d purchased months earlier. And now those recipes were easy. As were the Google recipes.

They’d done it.

In November, they insisted on hosting the seasonal holiday, much to everyone’s surprise. When everyone asked what they could bring, he and Emma happily assigned desserts and alcoholic beverages, and politely declined any offers of appetizers or side dishes or assistance with the main course.

As the meal progressed and the effusive compliments poured in, Killian simply looked at Emma and smiled. And at the end of the night, once the dishes had been washed, the leftovers stored in the icebox, and the guests departed, he took her in his arms. “I told you.”

“Told me what?” she asked.

“You’ve never failed before,” he reminded her. “And you certainly haven’t now.”

Humans are weird: the bears, The BEARS!

The cultural exchange was going okay, if not according to plan. The yell of alarm was, by this point, familiar and unconcerning although his curiosity was piqued as he folded his book and pushed himself out the chair, the next expected call of ‘Human Steve! Human Steeve!’ emanating on cue from his bedroom. The alien had been exploring around his dwelling and had clearly found something unusual. Probably a spider, Steve thought, he hadn’t seen one of those yet.

“What is it Gary?” He asked as he entered the bedroom, starting as he realised the alien was pointing one of his limbs at something on the bed.

“What. Is THAT?!” The alien quivered. Steve looked at the bed then looked at Gary. He moved to stand beside the alien and made a point of sighting along the limb, before going around the other side of the bed and checking to see if there really was nothing else that the alien could be pointing at. He pointed at it himself just to be absolutely sure.

“This?” Gary nodded. “Oh. Um,” Steve scooped up the toy and hesitated, half considering ramming it into the darkest depths of his drawers and pretending it hadn’t been there but it had Gary’s absolute attention so he held it up, showing it to the alien, “this is Sir Cuddleton. He’s my Teddy bear.” Gary didn’t seem to notice the rush of blood to Steve’s face that set his ears glowing a bright red but watched in alarm as the human carefully straightened out the fur on the things face.

“A bear? Bears are usually large predatory creatures” Gary noted then warbled, his usual nervous call of alarm. “I believe you said that bears are one of the only predators left on the planet that hunt humans.”

“Polar bears are the only species left that actively hunt humans yes.”

“Human Steve, is this Teddy bear a trophy of your successful hunting of a bear? Shorn from the beast itself, fashioned into its likeness and prominently displayed in your place of living to warn others of your strength and prowess?”

“What? No!” Steve frowned as the alien tried to shrink himself down, make himself look less threatening, which gave him the otherwise amusing appearance of melting into the carpet. “We’re not barbarians.”

“Then what is it’s significance?”

“It’s just a toy. We give them to our young to cuddle and keep them company.”

“Like pets?”

“Less messy. I’ve had this once ever since I was a kid.” Steve reverently placed the bear back on the pillows before turning to the alien. “Look, can you not mention this to any of the others? They’ll never let me live it down” Steve held up a finger silencing the next inquiry “Promise?”

“I promise.”

And that seemed to be that.

Gary had other ideas. The miniature beast plagued his mind and he went and tried to do some surreptitious research on teddy bears, disguising his intention by pretending to be interested in the variations in living spaces between humans (which was admittedly more than he expected).

He had dragged Human Steve along to Human Emmas quarters on one of these investigations.

“Sorry about the mess, Charlotte and Georgia came around yesterday and I haven’t had the chance to tidy.”

“That is quite alright Human Emma, I wish to see the natural Emma shot a searing glare at Steve who winced apologetically “state of Human quarters.”

“He wants to see more about how we live.” Steve translated as Gary had already started moving around looking at ornaments and the numerous brightly coloured kids toys that lay strewn across the floor, or in haphazard piles in the corners of the room.

“This is your-” the alien paused theatrically as he seemed to search for the word “-kitchen?” Emma nodded as Gary moved round pointing at the next door and Steve almost mouthed the next bit to himself knowing what was coming “this must be the bath-room. What a quaint arrangement.“

“Quaint?” Emma asked, surprised.

“Ah did it not translate? It means old and cute, often a low tech solution to a-”

“It translated, I’m just surprised you guys have a word for it too.” Emma observed as Steve nodded in agreement appreciatively. Gary lent down and picked a small grey and white toy off the floor.

“This must be a Teddy bear.” He held the toy dog up.

“Yeah, I’ll just pop that-” Emma started but Gary didn’t listen.

“In here?” He moved to the bedroom, opening the door before Emma could protest. In a flurry of excited barking and fur a husky leapt into the sitting room, bouncing excitedly around the guests until Emma commanded “Cassie, SIT!” and the mammal planted itself down in front of her. She started apologising but Gary had frozen, a strange expression on his face, his only movement to hold up the miniature version of the dog before him, looking between the two as colour drained from his body.

“Gary,” Steve started but Gary let out a warble of alarm and dove into the bedroom, shutting the door shut behind him.

In the bedroom Gary leant up against the door, trying to compose himself. Once he had his nervous system under control he had a look around the room. It was strewn with teddies of all different shapes and sizes, full of dogs, cats, bears and even some winged lizard, all in this ‘toy’ form.

Gary screamed and ran, Cassie barking after him as Emma clung on. His shriek of alarm held as he traversed the whole ship, fleeing to safety.

It took nearly eight hours to convince Gary to come out of his quarters, and even then only after they’d arranged for an immediate transfer and assured him Human-Emma and her pack were secured at a suitably distant location.

Knock knock knock. “Gary?” Steve called “It’s Steve. Human Steve. Er I just wanted to let you know your ship’s here, and I’m sorry for any alarm I-” the door slid open and Gary burst out. Steve caught a flash of silver before his ears were assaulted.

“I KNEW IT!” Gary screeched “The evidence was right there in front of us all along! We just couldn’t see it! The accounts didn’t match up: EARTH home to such an array of predatory animals, yet conquered by a non-apex mammal, what possible skill could give such advantage to one creature? Domination! The power to command others! Year by year the number of predators fell, just as the number of humans grew. Where were they going? Were they being killed? No! Humans don’t eat most of the animals. No, they were being tamed! and hidden away, ready to be unleashed upon any poor aliens that opposed you! But your secret’s been exposed, your vanity your undoing! We thought it suspicious how well you breed and train these dogs of yours, alleged pets but in reality just another stepping stone in your own training honing your nefarious skills on lesser creatures before you tackle the main targets. These trophies you brazenly display of your dominated creatures reveal the extent and depravity of the scheme- even using these ‘teddies’ to start teaching your young, even undertaking lesser training in BROAD LIGHT! So bold, so audacious, but your time is up- Tonight we go to expose and bring down your secret bear army, yes BEARS! the heart of your scheme, large fierce, no doubt bred for fighting, strangely absent form your world despite many tales of numerous of these creatures, fabled to be the only human hunters, surely escaped from your breeding facilities. You cannot stop us!”

“Stop what? Gary this is complete nonsense! There is no bear army!”

“Deny it all you like, it doesn’t matter we know where it is- THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!”

“Wait what?”

“Right in front of our faces! The evidence: The great bear constellation over the north of your planet; You even called your poles the ‘Bear’ and ‘Not-bear’ places! You thought we wouldn’t notice! You thought wrong! This is the last time you underestimate us! Tonight we ride, for honour, for glory, for the truth!” with that Gary let out the shrill war cry of his people and rushed down the corridor to the waiting ship.

“Um” Steve looked around shell shocked unable to gather his thoughts until another Human had gathered up enough courage to pop his head around the corner, frowning as much as Steve. “Was he wearing tin foil?”

The Earthfleet Commander looked down at the paper report in front of him as Steve finished his explanation. He had the perpetually resigned look all officers seemed to acquire these days.

“Well that explains their latest expedition to the Arctic circle.”

“The Arctic circle? They’re actually going to the Arctic circle?”

“Yep, as we speak.”

“Oh.” Steve frowned “has anyone mentioned that it’s almost entirely water up there?”

“Are you going to?”

I read a spoiler about 6x11 that Emma, Regina, and Wish!Robin will be returning to Storybrooke together, through what else but a magic wardrobe rebuilt by August...Any thoughts about the symbolism there? My mind immediately went to "closeted gays" lol

Oh, you did not just ask that, Anon!? I don’t have time to write all these volumes! …but okay, if you insist. Don’t twist my arm. (Please, twist it! 😏 )

I have a few answers here. Let’s start with…

The Queer

You know how Pilots subtly introduce the themes for an entire series? There were a million ways for them to show us Emma’s job as a bail bonds person. They chose to have her on a  fake date with a man. He thinks it’s the real thing. She has another agenda. Is Killian simply Ryan - the very, very extended version?

After that, we saw her come home, showing us once more that she was really only playing a part. She wasn’t comfortable in those shoes. I’m sure most women kick off their shoes and sigh in relief after… but you have to take into account that this is television. Everything you are shown is significant. They even zoom in specifically to draw attention to her body language.

If it wasn’t supposed to be part of the introduction of their main original character, then it wouldn’t have been included. You can explain queer coding away easily, since it was developed to fly under the radar. It’s the sum total of all the different instances that makes it impossible to deny in the case of Emma Swan and Once Upon a Time.

A little after, Emma and Regina meet. Emma looks completely captivated at first. Her body language, her stance, the licking of the lips, the way she looks a little annoyed by the existence of Graham.

Just look at her look at her.

Here is the moment that changes everything. Emma meets Mary Margaret. She meets her fairy tale mother and only after that moment we see her being put in the wardrobe. It’s symbolic. Emma doesn’t want to lose her family, she doesn’t want to do anything that rocks the boat too much. So she hides who she really is.

So yes, I absolutely think this moment was linked to Emma being closeted and that an episode where Emma comes out of the closet… means something. In fact I think it means exactly what it should mean.

The evolution is not happening in a vacuum here. Last episode gave them so many romantic fairy tale scenes. Wishes. Princesses. Singing. Saving. They were getting ready to leave while holding hands. They even marked the two obstacles they have to face before they can be together by having both shoot arrows at them.

Isn’t it interesting that the first issue was Snow White? You know, the mother who made the decision to put Emma in the closet?

…and that the second issue was Robin Hood? The man Regina thinks she should be with? In both of these moments something good was about to happen. Regina almost had Emma convinced when the Charmings showed up and without Robin’s intervention, they would have had an easy time getting back.

Emma said she remembers who she is - and I think she meant the Emma we met in Season 1. Last season we had Ruby’s story and as I’ve mentioned, the wolf is Emma’s guide, so it should have been a precursor to what’s going to happen for Emma later on. I think we’re all ready for later on.

We also started the season with these little gems…

…and they heavily insinuated all of our characters had some Untold Stories - the premise of this season, remember?

So if their entire show was meant to show us how women are socialized - put into a closet of expectation - and told what they can and can’t do - except they used a 28-year-old orphan who hadn’t gone through the process before instead of with an infant - then it makes sense Emma couldn’t come out before we got close to the end of their story.

It does imply that once they come out of the closet in the next episode, it will have to become more and more obvious to everyone how they really feel about each other.

The Narnia

Then there is the extended symbolism, where Emma going through the wardrobe marked the moment when Emma went to her very own Narnia. It was when she became part of the fairy tale world. She went through and became a fairy tale character. It wasn’t when she broke the curse or when magic came to Storybrooke. Things got crazy the second she woke up in that jail cell after the car crash - because that normally doesn’t happen in our world - or it really, really shouldn’t. Hospital’s the way to go. So I think going through the wardrobe also marks the moment when she left our world… and if they’re going back to Storybrooke through the wardrobe, it may be them coming back from their Narnia and we’re on our way to split the two worlds again into our world and the Enchanted Forest.

I was also thinking about Wonderland and how… the wardrobe also had restrictions. It only had enough magic for two to cross to another realm, so if Emma, Regina and Robin go through it, that may be the reason there are negative consequences. If we were supposed to link it to the Wonderland rules, the same applies, because only Emma and Pinocchio went through.

The Hidden

I’ve written about it here, but in short… there lies another story hidden beneath the surface. Pinocchio is the symbol of lying and August W. Booth is a reference to the concept of the unreliable narrator. It would make sense that the biggest secrets of the story are hidden behind those two characters. In fact, it would almost be odd if they didn’t use them to mark some sort of lie or warped reality that wasn’t obvious at first.

I think it’s possible the 7-year-old boy who found Emma as a baby couldn’t be tracked down because the newspaper or the police changed the gender to protect the child’s identity. When we landed in Once Upon a Narnia, the stories of our world were warped and so Regina’s story - in this case - was hidden behind that of Pinocchio.

I suspect Regina was the little girl who found baby Emma and saved her life. Emma was found outside of the woods of Storybrooke. Their ages match. Even if we leave this Narnia, it would be a beautiful modern fairy tale. Regina saves baby Emma, Emma saves Regina by giving her a son and in the end they end up saving themselves and each other when they meet again.

If this is really the case, then Pinocchio was always Regina. They were both the only ones who went into the wardrobe and now they will both come out together…

Love in the Time of the Gods: Chapter 13/17

SummaryKillian Jones is the lonely God of the Underworld in search of a companion. He is watching the goddess Emma, and suddenly has hope that his loneliness can be cured. She agrees to spend two weeks with him in the Underworld. Will that be enough to convince her to stay and rule by his side? (rating for later chaps; mention of sexual assault in one chap and not between Emma and Killian).

Author’s Note: FINALLY THE MUSE HAS SAW FIT TO ALLOW ME TO UPDATE MY BABY! Not only that, but Brenda (my muse…yes I named her) has saw fit to give me a final chapter count. So three more full chapters and an epilogue are left in my baby. If wanted, I can still revisit this universe. Thanks, as always, to @shipsxahoy, my beloved beta, banner maker, and Mulan to my Ruby. And to the official artist of LITTOTG and co-head cheerleader (other than Bianca, of course) @cocohook38. I’m telling you, Bianca and Julie are the brains of the operation; I just write the words.

Now, without further ado…

“I have never seen him so angry…” Pestilence acknowledged, leading the horses towards the cavern entrance.

“I’m just glad it’s not directed at us for a change,” Panic quipped, Pain nodding heavily in agreement. The three of them, while being his closest confidants for many a century, also took the brunt of his anger when he saw fit to lash out.

“How can you think like that when Emma has been taken? Need I remind you what happens when a soul-bonded goddess is away from her mate?!”

Both of their smiles disappeared. Pestilence filled them in on the information she had read in that book Killian had left lying around on his bed that day. She was so worried for her friend; she was taking this news as well as Killian was.

Sins of the Father

Note: Okay, okay, this request is ridiculously late and I am a terrible, horrible person and I hope 15ekaytert887 will forgive me. Anyway, she requested the following: “Wes does something bad and Killian begins to worry that his son is going to be dark like he was and then Emma somehow shows him that that’s not the case.” I tried super hard to keep true to the request as well as to my characters. This one got away with me honestly. I thought I was going to cap at 4,000 words but then it just took on a life of its own. As always, @welllpthisishappening, you are the light of my life and a trooper for encouraging me and reading all the spam messages I send you. Available in AO3 flavor here: [LINK]
Summary: “Seed is strong, lads. The sins of the father always come up in the sons.“ Killian’s old captain once told him that before punishing him and his brother severely for a crime they didn’t commit. However, Killian now wonders if there is any truth to it, considering the intense violence he witnesses his son committing. (AO3 Request)

Killian finds his son sitting outside the Dean’s office with a bloody lip, a bruise ringing around his right eye and discolored knuckles. The Dean of Students had called and said there was an incident, which Killian now knows from surveying his son and taking in the visual evidence that the incident in question was a fight.

Wes doesn’t know he’s there, not yet, and he’s staring at the wall in front of him with blazing blue eyes and a clenched jaw. His posture is stiff, as if he’s waiting for the perfect moment to bolt. His shaggy pale blonde hair is matted with sweat, strands curling over his ears and sticking to his forehead.

“Westley…” Killian calls, concern in his voice.

Wes looks up and Killian watches as a muscle jumps in his jaw. The fire isn’t quite replaced in his eyes, but he looks more surprised to see his father standing in Storybrooke Central High School’s administration office than ready to punch a hole through a wall as he did before.

“Dad, what are you doing here?” Wes asks, eyebrows furrowing together. Killian sees there’s something dark on his son’s forehead. He can’t tell if it’s another bruise or a smudge of dirt.

“The Dean called and said there was an incident and that they needed to talk to me about it,” Killian replies with an arched eyebrow. “Get into a fight, lad?”

“Normally Mom handles this,” Wes states, ignoring the question entirely. “I’ve never seen you come in before. I was beginning to think you were as allergic to school as I am.”

“Your mother is on-call, so I’m handling this. What happened, Westley? Fess up,” Killian commands, purposefully omitting the fact that the Dean had specifically asked for him to be make an appearance rather than his wife. He can’t fathom the significance of the request, but he knows whatever it is, it’s not good.

Before Wes can even speak, the door to the office opens and Dean Rooney, a haggard man with increasingly graying ginger hair and a handlebar mustache far too big for his face, appears.

“Mr. Jones, so glad you could make it. Please, come in…there’s a lot we need to discuss…”

Killian moves forward and Wes stands to follow them both. However, Dean Rooney places his hand out, gesturing to them stop.

“Westley, I know you’re an old hat at this, but I would like to speak to your father privately, if you don’t mind.”

Lunches with his sister were always more dramatic than they needed to be. To be honest, Killian wasn’t completely sure why he put himself through them so often.

“Seriously, Killian. One date wouldn’t hurt you.”

“The answer is no, Regina; we’ve been over this.”

She sighed. “I know, I know. But she’s really sweet! She teaches the first-graders!”

“That’s fantastic, but I’ll have to pass.”

Regina harrumphed into her salad. They had this conversation literally every week: she wanted to set him up with one of her cute coworkers, and he wanted to be left alone. Out of a nervous habit, he twirled his wedding band with his thumb.

“You know that she wouldn’t want you to be like this,” Regina said quietly, placing her hand over his to stop the nervous fiddling.

“I know,” he admitted, and he did. But the few times he’d tried to go on dates, it just never clicked. Emma had been the only one for him, and it wasn’t fair to another girl to try to fill that void with something unattainable.

“I just worry about you, all alone up there at the bar.”

“I’m not alone; I have my regulars.”

“Customers don’t count as friends, Killian.”

“Since when? They did on Cheers.”

“That was a TV show!”

“I’ll have you know being a bartender is not a role for the introverted. People trust you with their deepest, darkest secrets, and come to you for advice.”

“You’re romanticizing it.”

“You’d know better if you ever stopped by.”

Regina just scoffed and continued eating, so Killian followed suit and bit into his sandwich. His big sister was right that his existence was a bit of a lonely one, but it at least wasn’t boring. He had fond memories to look back on and a livelihood he enjoyed. And he didn’t have false hope, unlike some people he knew, but he’d save that discussion for another day.

Typical Regina, she changed the subject anyway. “When’s the last time you talked to Uncle?”

Killian pushed aside the billowy curtains of Granny’s dining establishment and peered uneasily out at Swan sitting upon a fallen log.  She worked quickly, almost feverishly at her dreamcatcher, as though the task was necessary to keep her from flying apart at the seams.

The all too familiar frustration and powerlessness overwhelmed him once again.  She was getting worse.  Despite all his best efforts, despite all their best efforts the darkness still had an effect on her and was still growing in power.  He wanted to scream, wanted to bury his hook in something repeatedly until some of the anger drained out.

The darkness had taken the woman he loved once before, and he’d be damned before he let it do it again.

…Missed Connections: Part 1/1…

Emma Swan sipped her coffee and rolled her eyes at her best friend and roommate. “For the last time, I am not signing up for online dating,” she said.

“Why not?” Mary Margaret asked.  "I can’t even tell you how many people I know who have found their significant other online, myself included.  David is amazing.“

"I’ll admit you got lucky, but I’ve told you why not a thousand times.  With my luck, I’ll end up matched with an ax murderer.”

“And who’s to say you won’t meet an ax murderer randomly?  This is New York City, after all.  You never know who you’ll bump into.  At least these dating sites do background checks on their guys.”

“And if I randomly meet a guy, I can run a background check too.  I’m a bounty hunter.  I have my ways.”

“Suit yourself.  Take your chances out in the world then,” Mary Margaret said, shrugging her shoulders and taking a sip of her coffee.

“I will,” Emma said, standing up.  “I’ve gotta run.  I have a lead on a jumper.  See you later.”

Emma picked up her coffee and rushed towards the door.  In her hurry, she didn’t see the man walking in at the same time.  They collided and the top of her coffee came flying off.  The contents spilled all over his blue button down shirt.

Emma’s eyes widened in horror. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” she said, looking up at the man.

Her gaze met the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen on the most handsome face she had ever encountered.  A grin spread across Killian Jones’ face as he looked at the gorgeous woman before him.

“It’s okay, love.  No harm done.”

Emma shook her head and awkwardly tried to swipe at his shirt with the napkin she held in her other hand.  She tried to ignore the feel of the hard muscles of his chest under her fingertips.

“Definite harm done.  Your shirt is ruined and this coffee is really hot.  You might have suffered burns.”

Killian smiled at her and touched her hand, stopping her movements.  Emma felt goosebumps appear on her skin at his touch.  Killian felt like a wave of electricity swept through him at the same moment.

“I assure you I’m fine, love.”

Emma dug into her purse. “At least let me pay for your dry cleaning.”

“That’s really not necessary.  I have at minimum five other blue shirts exactly like this at home.  I can simply discard this one and I’ll never even notice.”

“Let me pay for a new shirt then.  Maybe one in a different color,” she offered, chuckling nervously.

Killian looked down at her coffee cup where the barista had scribbled her name.

“Emma, is it?” She nodded. “Please don’t give it a second thought.  I’m fairly certain bumping into you is going to be the best part of my day.”

Emma’s mouth hung open for a long moment, as she got lost in the ocean that was his eyes.  She finally dropped her gaze to the ground.

“Okay, if you insist.  Sorry again.  Have a good day,” she mumbled.

She brushed past him, as he watched her go.  Killian sighed as he stared at the door long after she had left.  He had never felt such an instant connection with anyone before.  If only he had gotten more than her first name.

It wasn’t until Emma was a block away that she realized she didn’t even know his name.  And despite feeling an instant attraction and connection to him, she now had no way of contacting him.

merlin-of-gallifrey  asked:

What do you think the hug means in the context of operation out? You previously discussed how the touch Emma and Regina share fits the narrative of someone in a comatose/vegetative state, but now a hug seems to break the rules there? Or do you think this is happening perhaps in Snow's dream world? Also, thanks for sharing your positivity and theories!

I don’t like posting incomplete theories, but I’ll share the bits and pieces of what I think has been going on this season, because it’s so good for us, actually. Everything under this is my current hypothetical based on first impressions.

What’s been happening this season is that Emma is starting to wake up. Her subconscious recreates what’s happening to her in little summaries. The wish realm showed us what happened since the Pilot. She’s slowly sunk into a dream world where she lost her memories and tried to live up to her fairy tale parents’ expectations. The Emma she remembered was the Emma we first met.

Snow & Charming’s sleeping curse reflects her current state where she’s half awake, half asleep. Emma is their heart. That’s why I suspect they’ll break their sleeping curse, but get stuck on the sleeping side. It’s what happened to Emma, it would be another clue for her that it’s possible to think you have broken a curse while you haven’t. It gives them the opportunity to do a marriage and a musical. It’ll clue people in that something’s up… while still having Emma marry her Animus figure and thus making peace with herself.

That’s the bigger picture in a nutshell, let’s zoom in on the hug.

In this wish realm there was a choice to go back to the dream world - go through the portal - or stay with Regina who was going after Robin. Emma made her choice, she chose Regina and the world that seems less real to her than the current one - reality.

Robin - I assume - is/was Regina’s boyfriend in the real world, but he is also a self-insert for Emma. That’s why it’s difficult to understand what this character is about. Emma really dislikes him and thinks he isn’t right for Regina - on top of her jealousy, I think he is a lawyer who screwed up Emma’s case or something - so we get all these scenes where he becomes the character to ask the not-so-smart questions. In other moments he has conversations with Regina where Emma expresses what she would like to say to Regina through him. I think what died last season was Regina’s image of the man. She ended her projections and now she’s dealing with reality Robin. So that’s what’s going on with Regina emotionally and it’s mixed up -as usual - with what’s going on with Emma.

When Emma and Regina didn’t take the portal back, everything changed. Instead they went back through the wardrobe. We saw Emma go through the wardrobe in the Pilot, when she had the accident. Going through it again symbolized Emma getting closer to consciousness. She’s crossing over.

Emma is probably starting to sit up and make real eye-contact. Maybe she’s uttering some words, but she’s still very far gone. Meanwhile Regina has been living for years fighting this battle with her and for her. Regina feels like she knows Emma. She’s researched Emma’s life, she’s done the coma work where they talk through gestures and touches. Where someone taught her to interpret the fluttering of Emma’s eyelashes and twitching of a finger. She feels like she knows Emma intimately and similarly, she has shared a lot of herself with Emma she hasn’t told anyone… but suddenly Emma is waking up and she can’t be certain of anything anymore.

Now keep that in mind and think about Emma’s perspective. Her mind is constantly working to make a mash-up of her fairy tale world and the real world. As she gets closer to the real world, we get more and more snippets of real conversations and she has to work harder to make sense of what she really sees around her. What we’ve seen was always reality-related, but you have to imagine it’s becoming less and less warped. Conversations and people’s actions very close to the real world.

Regina is one of the people she has the most contact with. Suddenly Regina’s acting really strange to her in reality. Regina’s acting like she doesn’t really know her. All this time Regina has been talking to her like a normal person. Snarky, telling her things. Suddenly, because Regina sees the signs of Emma waking up, she’s talking to her like they’re acquaintances who sorta know each other. It doesn’t add up for Emma. She doesn’t understand the change in Regina. So what happens in Emma’s mind? First we have the wish realm where she’s lost her memories, that initially explains Regina’s actions.

…but even though she’s starting to remember who she is - which was significant and to be taken literally - Regina keeps being really weird. This can’t be about her, so it must be that Robin has come back, but he’s a different Robin who looks like Robin… Yes, that’s it. That’s who Regina’s talking to.

So when Regina and Emma came back through the closet…. that’s when Emma left her own Narnia. She crossed a boundary of wakefulness. She’s probably starting to sit up. Robin in this instance was simply Emma as well. He only appears after she leaves… and that’s when the first hug between Emma and Regina actually happens.

First it’s Regina just acting on emotion. She knows Emma, the thing nobody expected is happening, she’s still alive and now she’s actually waking up. Regina carries all this guilt about Emma’s car crash - it was the middle of the night and she’d given her a drink before she left. It’s just her first instinct. “You’re finally back.” She’s fought so hard for this woman, risking everything… and there she is suddenly. It’s a heartfelt hug full of emotion. She knows Emma, they’ve been in this together.

…but Emma’s still really weak. She isn’t very responsive yet, this is a very slow and gradual process. You can see it hit Regina. All the questions she has no answers to. How much does Emma know? How did she perceive all this? Does she feel the same about their bond, about their fight, their journey? She realizes that she has no idea how much Emma knows, how she perceived all of this, how she really feels… and how the image she has of her compares to reality.

…then she pulls back. Self-conscious, not sure how to proceed. She apologizes for maybe overstepping. Emma isn’t strong and aware enough to reassure her. She’s there and not there.

Then the conversation between Mary Margaret and Regina further reinforces they are really talking about Emma.

Mary Margaret: Regina what were you thinking, how could you bring him here?
Regina: You weren’t there. He was miserable in his world and he wanted a fresh start and I’m just trying to help him.
Mary Margaret: But you don’t know who he is. Looking like Robin Hood doesn’t make him the same person. Trust me, I once kissed David’s twin, world of difference.
Regina: We’ve barely even talked.
Mary Margaret: Well, there’s some things you should probably tell him, like for example he has a daughter.
Regina: It’s not his daughter.
Mary Margaret: Exactly my point, they’re different people.
Regina: But there could be a part of him in there. He was able to cross into the real world, that has to mean something.
Mary Margaret: Regina I want this to work out for you, you deserve this. I’m worried.
Regina: Yeah. Me too.

This is very close to reality. They’re worried because Regina has no idea how close the reality of who Emma is will be compared to the expectations. Not only did she only talk to Emma very briefly before the car crash, she’s gotten to know her through talking to people who knew her, through files and research. She knows her because they have been fighting together and Emma reached out to her… but they don’t know how Emma’s going to come out of this. Will she be the same person after brain damage? It’s all up in the air. They haven’t been able to talk much yet, Regina can’t really gauge the situation.

And then there is the issue of Henry’s custody. They share custody - it’s what happened during Going Home and it was represented by Snow & Charming’s heart split. I’m not 100% clear on the why behind it, but I think it was partly about keeping Henry - the small print on the adoption was what Mr Gold blackmailed Regina with during season one - that’s what the “Please” was about. And on the other hand legalizing Emma’s ties to Henry so they could take care of her and make decisions on her behalf to keep her alive.

Of course now imagine this unusual situation for Regina where she has to tell Emma - who for all she knows may want nothing to do with them - that she now has a son. And at the same time she is terrified that she will want Henry and they will disagree on parenting him, but she has legal custody. It’s a terrifying situation for her.

That’s what’s going on in reality. The hug is actually a good way to show how cyclical this show is. How we get the same experience from a very different perspective to process all the emotions behind it.

Of course, Emma wanted to frame this hug between the two of them as well, but it had to make sense in her current reality… one where she is marrying Hook and in denial about loving Regina. That’s where the warp happened. I think there may be a slightly darker side to his, because I think this is Emma’s jealousy. In the real world Emma is alone and she’s jealous of Robin… she’s turning the emotions around, it’s less painful for her if she imagines Regina being the one pining for her instead of the other way around. In this world Emma has it all and she’s afraid of letting that go. That’s why the hug between them was the anti-climatic one. Emma has to make all the stories match up with reality and they still have to mean something on an emotional level.

Last but not least, we had the hug between Regina and the Evil Queen - which was very much about Regina starting to love herself and looking at her past with compassion… but a part of it was also once again processing that first hug and how much it meant to Emma. There are now three instances triggered by the same event, the first hug.

Emma has a troubled past that Regina and Henry know about and it was one thing for them to fight for her when she was completely helpless and in a vegetative state… It’s another thing for them to keep her in their life when she’s awake. The Evil Queen represents Emma’s Id. Her essential self… and Regina hugged her. She hugged her anyway in spite of everything she knows. She told her they are in each other’s lives now, because of Henry, whether either of one likes it or not and that means something. Regina doesn’t treat her differently now that she’s waking and… Emma…. now she has that tiny sliver of hope that maybe this family is going to keep her.

…and excuse me while I go cry in the corner.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Recap: June 15th/16th

So as some of you who read my tags may have guessed, I went to see the play again this week. I wanted to hit a nice round number before my first anniversary of seeing Cursed Child next Wednesday, and I’ve been hearing such good things about how the new cast are developing that I couldn’t resist. I was not disappointed.

I’d been told that the show is almost unrecognisable from how it was on the 24th and 25th of May, and while that is not entirely accurate, it is so much more than what it was. My impression, particularly on the 24th, was of something raw and skeletal, that needed filling out. The bare bones were all there, but there wasn’t much detail, simply because they hadn’t had very much time to explore. And now they’re 13 shows in, the detail is definitely coming.
