Look! It’s me! I have come out of early retirement… BECAUSE I CAN!!!! Did you miss me? No? Toooo baaaaaad. I haven’t seen this movie since I first saw it so bear with my while I butcher the summery.

“Bacchan Keron! Bacchan Keron!” That is the call of the Frog King!

Nakashima Tetsuya’s Paco and the Magical Picture Book is a lovely story that is so colorful the Crayola people would have an aneurism. But no, okay this movie is about an ornery old business man Onuki (Yakusho Koji) who, after a collapse in a meeting finds himself in a “hospital” full of… interesting characters. Including a suicidal fallen child star (Tsumabuki Satoshi), a vampiric nurse (Koike Eiko), an evil nurse (Anna-T, ohmygod!) and so on. It’s this big Munstery looking house that only looks like a hospital because of the medical staff and the sick people loitering around. Seriously, watch the movie and you will be like, “How is that a hospital? How do none of the them have tetanus? (Wow, I have never had to write out tetanus before and I can’t believe you legit spell it like that… Jesus Fucking Christ, English). Where was I? Right…

The movie is set in a hospital where “strange” people are sent. One of the older, gruffer patients, is Onuki, a business owner who is sent to the hospital after a heart attack, thinks little of the other hospital patients, and hopes to die without being remembered by such “worthless” people. Another patient, a young girl named Paco, is in the hospital due to a memory disorder- she can only remember the events of one day at a time. Each day she reads a pop-up children’s book, and often asks Onuki to read to her. Each day it is a new story for her. Eventually, the two of them develop a friendship, and Onuki decides to enlist the help of the other people in the hospital to perform a play of the book, hoping it will help Paco.
