#HateLoveLists - Chris Brown, Elizabeth Taylor, March Madness and Derrick Rose

External image

1) Japan and the aftermath of the quake and tsunami, along with the unfurling nuclear disaster: 25,000 feared dead, reports of dying towns, billions of dollars in damage (as much as $309 billion, according to the Japanese government), radiation contaminated tap-water, and the untold billions of dollars in damage to a mostly export reliant economy. Daunting won’t begin to define the difficulty of Japan’s reconstruction.

2) One of the entertainment world’s enduring icons is no longer with us. R.I.P. Elizabeth Taylor.

3) All the Chris Brown non-sense: from his episode on Good Morning America to the hypocritical media backlash to the premature predictions of him committing career suicide (and the folks who seem to take delight at that prospect). What Brown pulled was mad extra. And to call Robin Roberts out her name for doing her job, is just distasteful.

3) Libya and Syria

4) Wyclef being shot in the hand in Haiti, his home country, and the news of former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier returning to his home country after a 25-year exile. Duvalier was arrested by the Haitian government and a judge has 30 days to decide whether to bring him up on charges of financial corruption and human rights violations. Still, his appearance has to be unnerving for Haitians who remember Duvalier’s 15-year reign where he allegedly embezzled between $300 and $800 million of Haiti’s assets during his presidency. SMDH.

5) Lawrence Taylor taking a butcher knife to his colossal sports legacy. He will be remembered more for being a sex offender than an NFL Hall-of-Famer, many could argue.

6) Dave Duerson’s autopsy report. Pretty depressing

6) Columnist Bob Herbert leaving the New York Times. This may be any a blip for many of ya’ll. But what it means is that the country’s foremost journalistic brand loses one of its last voices for the American working class. His last column could be read here.

7) The New York Knicks reverting to its old self. ‘Nuff said.

8) Pole Dancing for Jesus??? Seriously

9) The death of Geraldine Ferraro: The First Female VP candidate.

1) The Friday 'Sweet Sixteen’ NCAA games: Kentucky upsetting Ohio State; VCU knocking out Florida State. Both games were decided by two points or less. Both certifiable thrillers. This buzzer beater here = nuts:

2) R&B Gahdess Jill Scott back on the scene with some new music or at least with the promise of a new video.

3) Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. album being #1: Despite the defecation hitting the proverbial oscillation - his publicist quitting and such - Brown’s new album is expected to move between 250 to 300k units in its first week. It’s expected to top the Billboard album chart next week. We figure that if so many of ya’ll can celebrate Charlie Sheen’s bad behavior, why can’t you do the same for Chris?

4)  First Lady Michelle Obama giving the commencement speech at Spelman College.

5) All this dope music that’s out now: Pharoahe Monche’s W.A.R., Saigon’s The Greatest Story Never Told, Jennifer Hudson’s new album and Marsha Ambrosius’s disc. The music just keeps coming.

6) Unstoppa-Bulls: Call them the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NBA. The Chicago Bulls are as feisty, nasty and hungry - the pit bull you don’t want to fight. They lock up high powered offenses and they have a 'muscley-armed’ point guard who penetrates the paint at will in Derrick Rose [It’s your world son. We just livin’ in it]. Bulls Coach Tom Thibodeau is the defensive architect, a'la Bill Belichick. NBA Eastern Conference, meet your new father.

6a) Heat’s Rising: The Miami Heat that is. Reports of their demise have been greatly anticipated. 'Heatles’ Haters on our Twitter Timelines have been noticeably quiet. Where ya’ll at?

7) Shameless on Showtime. Holy ball-bearings. Did you see last Sunday’s episode? That show is certifiable.

8) Last but not least, Elizabeth Taylor arriving late to her own funeral - by request.

I’ve got crazy respect for Amare’ because he’s always willing to take fashion risks.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, which is how things work for most of us.  Still - I respect the guy for being willing to try new things.  This is actually one of his calmer looks, the black v-neck sweater is one of my favorite peices since it makes almost anything else look fly in combination.  Nice work with the glasses, but big bonus points for matching the G-Shock watch with the red stripe on the sweater sleeve.

LeBron Vs The World

In deciding to “take his talents to south beach” LeBron James put himself in a position to win multiple championships alongside Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. Even though at the time it was viewed negatively The Decision will eventually be forgotten and LeBron James’s legacy will remain untarnished.

In the summer of 2010 the basketball world was going crazy because there were superstar players available everywhere, big names like Amare’ Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, and of course LeBron James. There was tons of speculation about where all of these superstars were going, with the most interest being centered around Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and James. At the time James was considered the biggest prize because of his overwhelming talent, his age (26) and the fact that he’s still developing.

Almost every team was coveting LeBron including the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Chicago Bulls, the New Jersey Nets, the Miami Heat, and –his hometown team where he had spend the first seven years of his career- the Cleveland Cavilers. Every one of those teams was hoping to sign LeBron and maybe one more big name like Dwayne Wade, some of these teams even disassembled their roster just to have the cap room to sign these guys. The teams were under the impression that they would all have their chance to pitch an idea and future plans to LeBron in their respective cities but instead LeBron made all of them come to Cleveland, he listened to all of them and most teams walked away thinking they had a real chance of signing him.

On July 8th 2010 LeBron announced (on his controversial one hour special  titled “The Decision”) that he would be signing with Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade in Miami. The NBA world was in an uproar. There was tons of talk immediately about how much this would hurt his popularity on a worldwide level (however, if you look at his jersey sales, this is the first year ever that LeBron has lead the league in jersey sales, so I’d argue it made him more popular). Every team that talked to James was upset, they all felt that he wasted their time, and most felt they had been strung along which really upset them because these teams had spent tons of money, and some had essentially blown up their roster for nothing. It even lead to Cavilers owner Dan Gilbert making the ridiculous claim that “The Cavilers would win a championship before the Miami Heat”.

Now that the Heat are three wins away from their first NBA championship (and the Cavilers are amongst the bottom feeders in the league and in the NBA lottery) it looks like when LeBron made the decision to go to Miami he made the right choice. When he was explaining why he chose Miami he said it was because he wanted to win multiple championships and he thought that would be the best opportunity for him to do that. At the time a lot of angry people were saying that he took the easy way out by joining with these other star players and therefore if he did win any championships they wouldn’t mean as much. Other critics said that if he really wanted to win then he should have went to a team like Chicago.

Well, this was Miami’s first year together and they already look poised to win a championship, they’re actually playing better right now and looking more like a team right now than they have all year. This is also the first team they’ve been fully healthy all year, the team they’re putting on the court is the team they envisioned over the summer, but injuries quickly halted it. So the big question for them becomes chemistry, it’s the more underappreciated aspect of basketball. If you have the most talented team in the league but they players don’t like each other then there’s no way that team will win. The only way to build chemistry is with time these guys just need to play together. The three main guys are locked up for the next five years, so they’ll have that opportunity fort the chemistry to develop. So, this should actually be this teams worst year together, and it looks like they might win a championship this year. If they can manage to do that then they’ll be guaranteeing that they’ll be contenders for years to come.

If this team can stay together and win four or five of the next eight championships then LeBron will be forgiven (by everyone except for Cleveland fans), he’ll be thrust back into the greatest of all time conversation, and The Decision will be all but forgotten merely a scuff mark on an otherwise perfect resume’.
