Trift bridge, above the end of Trift Glacier in the Alps

Esposizione Internazionale Milano. 1906. Leopoldo Metlicovitz.

19 ½ x 35 ½ in./49.6 x 90.2 cm

This was the winning entry in the contest to celebrate the opening of the Simplon Alpine tunnel in 1906, which first provided a direct link between Paris and Milan. It is one of Metlicovitz’s most famous and inspired designs, the red of the engine’s light emphasizing the movement of the train out of the tunnel. This is the smaller format with Italian text.
