“When you try your best but you don’t succeed…When you get what you want but not what you need…When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep…stuck in reverse. And the tears come streaming down your face, when you lose something you can’t replace…When you love someone, but it goes to waste. Could it be worse?”
So they look like that little group of frat boys you always see around campus that just casually sit on their front yard. And Calum would always try and hit on you and get you to come to one of their parties, but you would always decline because you knew his reputation. So one day, when they were sitting down in the yard, watching everyone walk by, Calum would notice you walking down the street, tears streaming down your face. He would run up to you, startling you slightly, before wrapping his arms around you and pulling you close to him. And you, not really caring about what people say about him anymore, let him. You would sob into his chest for a while before pulling back and saying something like “I can’t believe he would just dump me like that. It was one time, I didn’t want to do it one time.” And Calum would quickly understand what you were talking about and hug you even tighter before pecking you on the forehead and walking you back to his friends. He would have you sit down on the yard with them and be like “sit with them for a second, I’ll be right beck,” before running down the street. Twenty minutes later, he would come walking down the street and up to you. One of his eyes would be puffy and already turning black, his knuckles dripping blood. You would run up to him and reach out and lightly touch his eye before choking out “what happened?” He would laugh a little before saying “he hurt you so I had to hurt him. Gotta live up to the reputation don’t I?”
You walk down the road at midnight with tears streaming down your face, you can’t believe your eyes, your boyfriend of 3 months, Aaron has just been caught kissing another girl at a bar and you’re heartbroken. The first thing you think to do is to call your best friend Luke.
“Hello?" he croaks when he answers the phone.
You don’t reply because you can’t through the mass of sobs.
"It’s Aaron isn’t it," he asks, you nod even though he can’t see you but you know he can tell, "You have the worst taste in guys”
“I know,” you weep.
“Come over," he insists.
You hang up and start the 10 minute walk, when you get there Luke is already outside in his pajamas. Immediately he hugs you and you cry into his shoulders, your eyeliner and mascara is halfway down your face and your perfectly curled hair is a mess.
"You don’t deserve this,” he mumbles into your shoulder.
You smile, “Thanks but why would it keep happening if I didn’t deserve it”
It’s the third time this year that a guy has cheated on you, first there was James, then Brandon and now Aaron.
“It’s your type, have you noticed that all of these guys are the same, all brunette, all strangely well tanned, all muscular and most notably all dickheads?” he continues.
“I can’t help that,” you say.
“I really wish you could because it kills me to see you hurt,” he replies.
That night you spend the night on his bed while he sleeps on the sofa and when you wake up there is a white rose on the pillow opposite you with a little note that says ‘follow the trail’.
Confused, you sit up and see a trail of the white rose petals trailing out the door. You get up, dressed in one of Luke’s jerseys and follow them out the door. It leads you first to the bathroom where another note is left 'You deserve so much better’. They then lead to the kitchen where a cup of your favourite tea sits and another note 'I wish you would open your eyes a little and see what’s right under your nose’. Drinking the tea you follow the petals into the lounge where there’s another note 'I have a secret for you, and don’t worry you don’t have to follow the trail for much longer’. The trail continues out the sliding back door into the garden where you see Luke in a shirt and tie. You look at the grass where you read the rose petals that spell out 'I love you’.
“I always have, (Y/N),” he smiles nervously. “I know you don’t love me back but it kills me to see you with these douche bags that hurt you, and as much as I love that I’m the first one you think of to call I’m sick of it”
You don’t say anything as tears flood your eyes.
“Well say something, so I don’t feel like the biggest idiot ever,” he laughs sheepishly.
You don’t say anything again but you just rush forward creating a whirlwind of rose petals. Your hands find the sides of his face and your lips touch his. You thought that this would be weird but as Luke settles and gets over the shock of what happened you realize that it just feels right. His hands rest at the bottom of your back and you look into his eyes.
“Don’t do this, Y/N, please-” tears brimmed his eyes, threatening to spill.
“You’re drowning me Calum, emotionally, I can’t take it anymore,” the tears hadn’t held back for you, streaming down your face, they didn’t make the situation any better when muffled sobs escaped your lips, “I’m sorry. It’s over Calum.” You finally whispered before you turned and walk away.
“Please Y/N don’t-” you closed the door behind you, leaving his voice behind the wooden wall. It didn’t protect the sobs coming from the other side from escaping through the cracks. You knew he would run after you, so you went down the corridor from his apartment for the last time.
