PMW’s FAVORITE SONGS OF 2012 (pt. 1 // #21-50)

When compiling the final top 50 list of my favorite tracks of 2012, I was constantly having to self-edit in order to wrangle the list to a reasonable number. That’s a good sign that we’ve been hearing a wonderful year of music. I knew that I could nail a solid top 20 down, but everything after that would vary depending on day or mood, but I couldn’t just leave it at 20 when there are so many wonderful songs that meant a lot to me this year - so, I’ve topped out at 50, with the back thirty tracks being presented in alphabetical order as opposed to numerical. This way i can give respect the magical sounds that helped shape my year. Everything from Grimes' and Frankie Rose's early year additions to late entries from Big Boi and Girls Names. Like the top twenty that will follow, the sounds will range from eclectic hip hop offerings to steely post punk rhythms to ethereal shoegaze to hazy dream pop lullabies and everything between.

It’s hard to say any one song is better than another, because it’s all a world of preference, so this list is presented in the least offensive way I could possibly think - alphabetically, with links to each track for your sampling and listening pleasure (and in most cases - my original thoughts on each track). Please enjoy, and stick around for the top 20, which I promise you will be loaded with more excellence, and a podcast to boot.

New A.C. Newman! It’s called “I’m Not Talking” and I love it. So excited for the new album. Oh, and Noah Kalina shot the cover.

That was the year I was left at the altar, it was the year I got knocked out by a crazy bartender, the year I got fired, the year I got beat up by a goat, a girl goat at that, and damn it if it wasn’t one of the best years of my life. Because if anyone of those things hadn’t happen, I never would have ended up with the best job I ever had, but more importantly, I wouldn’t have met your mother, because as you know, she was in that class. Of course that story is just beginning.

New York based singer songwriter Adrien Reju enlists A.C. Newman of The New Pornographers on charming new single Hemophiliac Of Love. The song is a pleasant, warm blend of folk intimacy and A.C. Newman’s power pop punchiness. Hemophiliac Of Love is the first single from Adrien Reju’s soon to be released EP, Strange Love. The track is a cover of an obscure song by late 80s / early 90s psychedelic rock act King Missile.

Are you kidding me?!? This is simply great, great music. A.C. Newman (whom you may know from his work with The New Pornographers) is releasing another solo album, Shut Down The Streets. Having clearly made a name for himself with past solo efforts, Shut Down The Streets, in all its early previews and growing excitement, is almost sure to please.

Another pre-release track I’m Not Talking (which you can hear here) makes another moving case for this album. I’m incredibly excited for this. Look for the whole package on October 9th!
