Welcoming Death Like An Old Friend

A Carver Era Rewatch Hiatus Meta-Series

There really isn’t a lot to say here as I think the gifs make the parallels pretty clear, but I just need to express how well done and heartbreakingly the events of the first episode of S9 are revisited in the last episode of S9. Especially the way the dialogue is shot between Sam and Dean. From the holding on to each other, right to the pat on the cheek for the final goodbye - it’s all there. Only with the roles reversed…

Dean + S9/S10/S11 + Dark Blue Jacket (Companion Piece to This)

By now Dean’s “Red Shirt of Doom” is a well known stylistic device. Most of the time it is, I realized, accompanied by the “Dark Blue Jacket of Mourning/Loss of Control/Self” (as I would label it right now). Red and dark blue/black has been connecting Dean right from the beginning to the Darkness/Amara, who as a growing girl was constantly wrapped in red dresses with dark blue/black details and now as a grown woman is wearing a dark blue/black dress.

What all these moments of Dean wearing this jacket have in common is that they mark times Dean either looses control of himself, becomes a victim of mind control, is used by another force against his will and gets deeply hurt in the process or experiences moments in which he feels helpless and unable to make a difference, because he’s “just a witness”

Dean wore the red shirt and dark blue/black jacket combi in 10x23 “Brother’s Keeper” when the Darkness was released and therefore in 11x01 “Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire” too when he met Amara in the eye of the storm. And who knows, maybe that’s exactly how this season will end too, after all it felt much more like a glimpse into the future than the real thing…

Also, as a side note: I really love how we see Sam display concern for Dean here and how he offers support in very differing ways. From the consoling pat on the shoulder in 11x14 “The Vessel”, to a heartfelt hug in 10x14 “The Executioner’s Song”, to pulling Dean close like in 11x16 “Safe House”. Especially the last one really gets to me as Dean at first seems to almost try and gently push Sam’s hand away so typical for Dean, because he thinks he has to be the strong one, but then just sags against his brother. I don’t know, I just like it a lot how Sam is the one to take care of Dean in a similar way as Dean did so many times before.
