Bernie Wolfe Appreciation, day 9

S18 E47 Protect and Serve: Bernie Wolfe kisses her best friend, a straight girl as far as she knows, and then when the kiss stops, she. just. waits.

That impromptu kiss is a recipe for disaster, and arguably it’s all too intense and sudden for her to have any real thoughts about, but there has to be at least a moment of “Oh!” and quite possibly the first unfurling of doubt. Maybe even an “Oh no.”

She doesn’t just push through and keep on kissing Serena. She doesn’t flee, doesn’t nervously crack a joke or something, doesn’t brush it off. She sits there, makes eye contact and waits.

And, I think it’s beautiful.

Post 1 is also where you’ll find the reason for this little series and the disclaimer.

Wraths for peasant.

Ok, so you can’t Wrath of god, Damnation, even Armageddon in this format, how are you supposed to handle when you’re on your ass and need to wipe the board? Lucky for you, there’s some great answers.

Fireball

Awkward but really handy for clearing the board for you, this works best in ramp heavy decks (I’m a huge fan of it in Eldrazi GR), you really need either the Urzatron up and running or the 8post to use it as a real wrath effect, but it can do the job just fine in those types of decks with mana to waste. The bonus of being able to just dome out an opponent in my mind balances how hard this fails versus a Patouche build.

Slice and Dice

Utility! This is a good option as it’s great late game after a bad combat or great early game or against tokens. Cycling this for that extra card draw versus a Thopter combo deck feels great when you’ve just wrathed them.

Firespout

Say hello to green/red’s best wrath like effect. Going up against a weenie/token deck? it’ll hit for three on the ground. Going against a deck with lots of fliers? Red and green don’t really get flying in this format, but firespout will wreck them too. If you’re just not getting there, it works as a pinch wrath for everything except fatties. Definitely mainboard-able if you’re running both colors, but still something to consider if you’re only in one and have access to the other color through whatever shenanigans.

Engineered Plague

In a format where small aggressive creatures are common, engineered plague is totally worth one of your uncommon slots. Being able to sneak this by a Thopter combo deck is just beautiful given how few of them maindeck enchantment hate. I played this once against someone who looked at it for a long time and just scooped when he realized he had no answers for it. It also wrecks Elves and can even handle Patouche’s Hexproof weenies.

The Echoing Cycle (but mainly Decay and Truth)

This five color cycle is all removal except for green and they all do what you’d expect, white kills enchantments with the same name, blue bounces, black gives penalties and red destroys artifacts. The thing is, you really want these against token/weenie decks, more so the token ones. at their worst, these are overcosted removal, at best, they’re a board wipe. even hitting two cards with this is worth doing in my mind. Plus blue rarely gets full board answers. Also on a related note, Bile Blight is Echoing decay’s big brother, but unless you’re running into decks pumping out 3/3 tokens/creatures, I wouldn’t use an uncommon slot for it.

Fade Away

I actually found this while searching for this list, it’s not amazing on account of you kinda need your opponent tapped out or close to it, but it’s still a really cool old common that can be a board wipe, I’m definitely trying this in a blue control deck at some point.

There’s my primer on “oh no, I can’t wrath in peasant!’ and how yes, you can actually wrath, it’s just like anything else in peasant, it’s just different, Weirdly enough, the color best known for wrath effects (it’s even got the namesake!), white doesn’t seem to have any good options here.
