Episode 86 - Fash The Patriarchy feat. Angela Nagle (2/26/17)
We talk with writer Angela Nagle about her work studying the alt-right, its different stripes, divisions, and contradictions. Far before Milo fell from grace, Angela predicted that the alt-right would

Anyway I think the Chapo Trap House episode with Angela Nagle is one of the best ‘examinations’ of the alt-right along with the other articles Nagle has written

Hey everyone!
You may remember this ask from way back on July 20th in which I finally caved and declared an emergency hiatus. Two family friends had died on the 14th and 15th, and my air conditioning went out on the night of the 15th. By 7 PM on the 16th, the first floor of my house was 87 degrees. My state has been going through extremely severe and prolonged heat waves, and despite that I never open my blinds, it was routinely 86 degrees in the house in the evenings after work, and when I came home after work on the 17th, my 14-year-old cat who suffers from early stages of kidney failure anyway hadn’t eaten, hadn’t had anything to drink, hadn’t used the litterbox, and hadn’t moved. His ears–where it’s easiest to tell if a cat is overheating–were the same temperature as when he’d had a fever after a poor reaction to a shot ages ago. I immediately had to board him, hoping my vet would be good enough to just take him for as long as I needed it, without any word about when it would end.

This continued with extremely poor communication from my property managers until July 27th at 6 PM when a repair man stayed overtime to come replace the broken parts–the same serviceman who’d come to diagnose the problem way back on the 18th. I was itching to get back to you all, but the very next week was the beginning of our busiest week of the year: One class of students moving from their first to their second year with all the orientation to go with it, one class graduating and all the prep that goes with that, preparations for the next incoming class in less than 2 weeks, and technical difficulties in another department having a detrimental impact on the applications for our next class.

These past three weeks have sent my anxiety and stress levels straight through the atmosphere and gouged more than $900 from my savings on top of my usual rent (which they would not budge on, nor would my renters insurance reimburse). I apologize for the extended disappearance, but things should start calming down now and we can get back to work here on the blog. I appreciate your patience, and we’ll get back to talking about things on Wednesday!

Your ever exhausted mod,

Mender Note: Duskward Duskcatcher

Dawnwards Novastorm & Dawnbrook & Dawnsworn,

Doing my rounds I noted one patient missing. After checking I discovered it was  Duskward Vivvienne Duskcatcher who was missing from her cot. It took some time to search amid the still-settling camp as well as the infirmary. I eventually located her at a rotting house (86.3ish and 70.9ish on our map, I think.) with Emberward Firewing who was unaware she was supposed to be in the infirmary. I escorted her back but initiate Thinariel Farmight should get credit for finding her first.

Adding this to her note. She didn’t seem delirious, rather having left the infirmary to retrieve things left at Light’s Hope. Putting this note in her file in case her work retrieving her things makes her more sick on accident.

Fluffy Fridays—Chapter 86: Making a House a Home

Pairing:  Captain Swan (and Captain Cobra Charming)

Rating: T

Summary:  A series of unrelated, fluffy one shots featuring  Killian Jones and Emma Swan and the relationship that makes us all  swoon. Will contain both canon and AU stories. My contribution to  Operation Rainbow Kisses and Unicorn Stickers (aka, my attempt to drown  out the season 4 finale angst with ridiculous levels of fluff.)

They were kissing again before Emma even finished poofing them back to her living room, mouths desperately fusing and parting, heads tilting this way and that, seeking the perfect union.  Emma held to Killian’s lapels so tightly her knuckles turned white as he dove in for another round, head tilted to the perfect angle, his tongue darting forward, alternately teasing and tangling with hers, slowly driving her mad. Things were heading in a very tantalizing direction, and Emma was afraid she’d self-combust if anything happened to stop them now.

Emma felt the arm of the sofa at the back of her legs, and she let herself sink down, Killian following. Good thing too.  He kept kissing her like that, her legs were going to turn to complete jelly.

Still…probably best to take all necessary precautions before she and her True Love found themselves in a very embarrassing situation…

“Oh wait!” she said, her voice breathy and urgent, “what about Henry?”

Killian grinned down at her. “He’s with Regina.”

The Real-Life Story That Inspired “Up”

Before Carl and Russell took their adventures into the wilds of Venezuela, the iconic cottage house in Disney and Pixar’s Up was still on the ground, in the midst of encroaching high-rise construction.

In Seattle, the story of this house had a very similar plot.

Meet Edith Macefield. Her 108-year-old farmhouse in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard was in the middle of an area undergoing lots of commercial development. Before moving to this little house in Washington state, Edith had an interesting life. Born in Oregon in 1921, Edith lied about her age in order to join the service and support the war effort in England. Even when others discovered that she wasn’t 18, Edith stayed overseas to care for orphans until her mother became ill and she returned to the States. Her only child, a son, died of meningitis at 13.

Edith’s goal was to stay in her own home as long as possible.

“My mother died here,” she said, “on this very couch. I came back to America from England to take care of her. She made me promise I would let her die at home and not in some facility, and I kept that promise. And this is where I want to die. Right in my own home. On this couch.”

In 2006 she was offered $1,000,000 for her property. She turned it down. Her refusal to sell made her a local folk hero and brought her national attention. “I don’t want to move. I don’t need the money. Money doesn’t mean anything,” Macefield told the Seattle P-I.

When construction of the neighboring high-rise brought cranes over her house, she turned up the television. “I went through World War II,” she said. “The noise doesn’t bother me. They’ll get it done someday.”

Enter Barry Martin, construction chief of the project around Edith’s house. After working close by and hearing of her story, the two struck up a friendship.

When Edith became increasingly ill with pancreatic cancer, it was Barry who took care of her. For two years he drove her to appointments, nursed her, cleaned her, fed her, and listened to her stories about escaping from Nazis and being a spy for the Allies.

Edith died in 2008, at the age of 86, in her house just like she wanted. And she left her little house to Barry.

Inspired by their friendship and the experience, Barry wrote a book about everything he had learned from Edith.

Edith’s legacy has reached far and wide. The first annual Macefield Music Festival was held in 2013, dedicated to preserving Edith’s fiercely independent spirit. A local tattoo artist created a design in honor of Edith and her house and the importance of “holding on to things that are important to you.”

As much as she loved her home, at the end of her life, Edith was realistic about the realities of change and the long-term future of the space.

In late 2008, the house was sold for $310,000 (much less than the 1 million offered to simply tear the house down). The structure will be slightly expanded, but left largely intact and used as a community center.

Thanks, Edith.

Anyone who hides Muslims from the anti-balaka militia is at risk in Carnot, Central African Republic (CAR). On February 7, an anti-Balaka group entered a house where 86 displaced Muslim men, women, and children were being hidden. Seven men were executed and three people were struck with a machete, including a 12-year-old child. After nearly two hours of very tense negotiations, MSF was able to gather the wounded and those requiring immediate medical care. Read more: http://bit.ly/1czCb5W
