Before too long it was time for Avery to go. They 3 of them walked outside together. Melody gave Avery a goodbye kiss and then stepped aside to let him have his moment alone with Poppy who was racing ahead, thinking she was going with Avery.
He took her hand and walked down the path with her. Poppy looked up at her father, smiling from ear to ear as they walked down the path slowly. Poppy stumbled as she walked slowly but Avery held her hand tight so she wouldn’t fall.
Avery: So Poppy, Daddy has to go for a little bit but you are going to stay and have fun with Mummy okay?
Poppy looked up and started quizzically at Avery. Tears welled up in Avery’s eyes as he scooped his daughter into his arms and embraced her. It was only 6 weeks, but a lot could happen in 6 weeks; first sentence? walking on her own? He didn’t want to miss any of it. But he had to go.
He kissed Poppy on the forehead and she smiled back at him.
Avery: Bye bye Pop! See you soon!
Poppy: Dada! *smiles*
Avery: Good girl Poppy! Now can you say ‘Bye Dada?’
Poppy: Bwwye Dada!!
Avery handed Poppy back to Melody and headed to his car, before he started to cry. He missed them already; this would be a hard 6 weeks for the both of them, but it would be worth it in the end.
