For some context, in the Campaign I’m DMing we’ve been stuck in a maze of caves in search of a missing child, the party comes across two skeleton Minotaurs which I planned to be mini bosses. The party are very underprepared for the fight.
Bard(ooc): “uh- can I insult the Minotaur?”
Me: “sure, though I’m not sure it’ll do much”
*Bard uses vicious mockery, rolls a Nat 1*
Bard(ooc): “Shit, that’s not good.”
Me: “well, before your impending doom, what did you say to the skeleton?”
Bard: “uh- you have a very… nice… Skeletal structure.”
Me: “… Did you just flirt with the Minotaur?”
Bard(ooc): “I want it so that I failed so hard I accidentally flirted with the skeleton”
Warlock(ooc): “How’d you managed that?”
Bard(ooc): “I am capable of nonsense”
*I roll for wisdom and didn’t beat the mark by a huge gap*
Me: “Well, the Minotaur doesn’t quite understand what you said, but it was flattered anyway. Congrats you just seduced a pile of bones”
Bard(ooc): “Oh shit, well um… Do I have a charisma bonus on her now?”
Me(ooc): “I guess so. Also the other Minotaur was her husband, he is now jealous and wants to kill you, plus he has a strength bonus on you.”
Bard: “Aw shit. Uh- I’m running behind this rock, I’m not moving and no one can tell me otherwise”
Knight: “Help us you coward!”
Bard: “you probably got this!”
*a round passes and it is the Bard’s turn again, the rest of the party are almost dead*
Barbarian: “so our fate rests with the bard?”
Warlock: “Our journey is over.”
Bard: “I convince the skeleton to kill her husband, and then herself”
Me(ooc): “wait what?”
Bard: “you heard me! Don’t question it sky narrator!”
*she rolls 18 persuasion. I roll a 5 wisdom and sigh in defeat*
Me: “She proceeds to decapitate the other skeleton, and then herself. The two collapse in a heap of bones. You’ve won.”
Barbarian(ooc): “you can’t be serious”
Warlock(ooc): “Never thought I’d see the day that ‘Bard’ actually helps us in a fight.”
Knight(ooc): “We won by telling it to go kill itself.”
Bard: “I play my victory song on my sacbutt(trombone)”
*my friend proceeds to pull out her actual trombone and play Final Countdown as me and the rest of the party contemplate life*
Today was the day you were getting all four of your wisdom teeth removed. You were beyond anxious for the procedure as it was the first time you would ever be sedated.
Ethan and Grayson would tell you that it wasn’t as bad as you thought. They kept trying to calm your nerves down. Ethan came up with the idea to film your whole procedure and upload it on their channel.
The twins and you have been friends for years, so the fans already knew who you were. You made a regular appearance on their videos and would assist them on holding up the camera or the microphone.
Currently you were in the car with the twins and your mom driving to the oral surgeon. Grayson was up in the front holding the camera with your mom while Ethan and you sat in the back.
“Hey what’s up guys, we’re back! Today we are taking our amazing friend to get her wisdom teeth removed. We are really excited for her while she on the other hand is scared out of her mind,” Grayson laughed.
“Hey it’s not funny!” You chuckled while lightly hitting him on the head.
Final thoughts before you go into the procedure?“ Ethan asked you while focusing the camera on your face.
“Gosh I hope I don’t turn into a savage and gets listed on the top five worst patients list. Oh and that I don’t expose myself,” you laughed while running your hands through your hair.
“Hey I was drugged up and my extra savage mode was activated. Not my fault,” Ethan defenses himself.
Soon you all pulled up into the office and your mom parked near the entrance. All four of you walked out the car and into the office building. Your name was called up and you nervously walked in and waved at the boys who were giggling.
“Gosh we can’t wait to see what Y/N says!” The boys excitedly exclaimed into the camera before shutting it off.
You were out of the procedure and were now resting. The boys and your mom were soon called back into your room but you were so out of it you didn’t even see them come in.
“Hey Y/N,” Ethan spoke while now standing in front of you.
“Hey babe,” you winked.
“Oh my gosh,” Grayson laughed as he turned the camera to a blushing Ethan.
“Whoa,” you mumbled in shock. Staring at the twins you held out your hand and moved it in front of them thinking you were seeing double.
“There’s two of you!” You exclaimed.
“Yeah I mean we are twins. You should now this by now,” Ethan laughed.
“Gosh you both are hot as fuck. How’d I get so lucky to have two cute ass guys in my life,” you sighed. Scrunching up your eyebrows you put a finger in your mouth feeling the cotton ball.
“Hey no don’t do that,” your mom scolded while gently taking your hand out of your mouth.
“I can do what I want,” you sasses while spitting out the bloody cotton balls.
“Y/N!” Grayson yelled while trying to hold back a laugh.
“Y/N, you have to keep them in your mouth or it will get infected,” The nurse spoke as she walked in to check on you. Nodding your head you let the nurse clean your mouth and change your gauze. Once you were cleaned up the nurse asked your mom to fill out some paper work out front leaving you with the boys.
“Guys I’m hungry,” you mumbled while leaning your had back onto the chair.
“You can’t eat for a while,” Grayson informed you.
“I want pizza,” you mumbled while messing with your sweater sleeve.
“You can’t eat that for a while Y/N,” Ethan spoke this time. Looking at the two boys you rolled your eyes and scoffed.
“I don’t care.”
“Wow you are starting to sound a lot like Ethan when he was in here,” Grayson laughed while keeping the camera on you as you tried getting up.
“Nope stay in your chair Y/N. You are going to hurt yourself,” Ethan instructed while trying to pull you back down.
“No! I do what I want. I-I’m in independent woman! I can do whatever the heck I want.” Getting up from your seat you weakly pushed Ethan away. Loosing your balance you started falling down onto the floor. Ethan quickly wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you up.
“Whoa I thought I was going to die,’ you mumbled while gripping onto Ethan’s arms. Standing up straighter you wrapped your hand around Ethan’s bicep amazing at how big and bulky it felt.
“Damn you have some huuuuugge muscles,” you said in awe while feeling his arm around.
Ethan’s face again turned a deep red while he laughed in embarrassment. He wasn’t used to you feeling him around and you being drugged up didn’t help the situation because you forgot about boundaries. Soon your arms found its way to his face, neck, and the chest. In your mind you were trying to find more muscles but instead you were making Ethan more awkward than he already was.
“Umm I think we need to sit you down,” Ethan mumbled with a chuckle as he sat you back down much to your dismay.
“Oh my gosh I love Y/N!” Grayson laughed.
You were now in the car on your way home. The seating positions were the same and you were currently leaning your head on the window. You felt tired and closed your eyes trying to shield out the light.
“Guys I think she’s falling asleep. She got really quiet when she got in the car,” Ethan mumbled as he spoke to the camera. Picking your head up you looked over at Ethan and said, “Boy I’m wide awake. What chu mean.”
That earned a laugh from all three of the people in the car with you. Shaking your head you pulled your hair up into a messy bun and fixed your hoodie.
“Oh my gosh do you guys wanna hear a secret! Wait, no I just wanna tell Grayson!” You exclaimed while trying to take your seatbelt off and leaning forward towards Grayson.
“Hey, put your seatbelt back on Y/N,” your mom instructed you making you huff and roll your eyes.
“Fine ma,” you huffed while rolling your eyes before continuing, “Oh Grayson guess what!”
“What?” Grayson asked wondering what you could possibly tell him.
“I have a little cruuuuussshhh. No a biiiiiiiiiig one,” you laughed while leaning your body back in your seat.
“Ummm are you sure you want to tell me this now?” He asked not wanting you to expose yourself in front of Ethan, the camera and your mom.
“Yeah why wouldn’t I! He’s sooooo cute and he has this adorable laugh. Gosh is he the most handsomest person ever.” You mumbled while wiping your mouth with the tissue Ethan handed you to wipe off the blood.
“Y/N, I don’t think this is a good idea,” He mumbled knowing you were going to regret this later on when you have the drug out of your system. Shaking your head you leaned forward and whispered (or at least what you thought was a whisper), “Ethan is so hot.”
That was it. That was the moment you exposed your true feelings to both the twins and your mother. Your foggy mind of course didn’t really think this through at all and just sat back down as if nothing happened.
Ethan on the other hand almost dropped the camera from shock. He looked at Grayson who had an equally shocked expression. Grayson was not expecting for it to be Ethan she had a crush on. I mean yeah he noticed you would tend to hang out with Ethan more than him, but he always thought it was because you two had more in common.
Your mom raised an eyebrow and softly laughed to herself knowing you were going to hate yourself for this later. She already knew you liked Ethan because she over-heard you asking your older sister for help about it a few weeks ago.
“E give me the camera,” Grayson spoke while reaching over to it. Ethan did as told and gave him the camera while keeping his eyes on you.
You were messing with your nails trying to figure out why they were blue. Oblivious to the whole situation you continued to ask your mom as to why your nails were blue and if they were falling off.
It has been about three days since your procedure and your face was slightly less swollen. The boys had only visited you once out of the week which you found a bit odd. Normally they would be at your house every day or you would be at theirs. You didn’t give much thought into it because you knew they probably got busy with work.
“Y/N, Ethan is here.” Your older sister informed you as she walked through the living room.
“Okay,” you mumbled while putting an ice pack on your face hoping to reduce the swelling. Letting out a sigh you sat up on the couch while switching through the channels are you waited for Ethan to appear in the room.
“Hey,” he awkwardly said as he sat down next to you.
“Hey Ethan, what brings you to casa de Y/L/N?” You asked him while rearranging the ice.
“I umm wanted to ask you something. I know you probably won’t remember this but I need to have something confirmed.” He quickly spoke.
Looking at him with confusion etched on your face you slowly nodded her head and waited for him to proceed.
“Okay so when we were on our way back to your house you kind of said something about liking me.” He mumbled almost making it hard for you to hear.
Almost, because you heard everything clearly. Awkwardly clearing your throat you set the ice pack down on your lap and kept your eyes on it.
“Look I know this is awkward for both of us. If you want the truth yes I have a crush on you. I’ve liked you for almost two years but I didn’t want to say anything. I didn’t want to ruin the friendship we have; or had at least because I’m sure I just made our friendship awkward too,” you mumbled scared to look up at Ethan.
Ethan was watching you and how you were nervously messing with the ice pack that now becoming liquid. He had this smile on his face that you didn’t see because you were too scared to look him in the eyes.
“I like you too. I’ve liked you for a while now. I guess I was also worried about ruining our friendship,” he admitted. Looking up at him with pure shock you studied his face to find any signs of lying.
“So I guess what I’m trying to say is: Will you be my girlfriend?” He nervously asked making you smile.
“Yes,” you smiled while wrapping your arms around him pulling him into a hug.
“If I could kiss you I would,” you whispered while laughing. Gosh did you hate that you got your wisdom teeth. Yet loved it because if you weren’t drugged up you wouldn’t be in the position you were now.
“We don’t want you getting any dry sockets,” he teased before pressing a kiss to your puffy cheeks.
“So how does a movie and ice cream sound?” He asked you while sitting closer to you.
“It sounds perfect,” you smiled to your boyfriend.
Everything you could have dreamed of finally came true and you finally got the boy of your dreams.
10 Movies that could change your understanding about life
Every movie has the ability to affect its viewer differently. Some films evoke wonder and excitement, while others provoke fear or sorrow, but a commonality among all films is a prevailing message or theme.
Some films can summon such profound questions, that it changes the way you perceive life as you once knew it. The following list contains 10 unique movies that do just that.
10) Donnie Darko
Richard Kelly’s cult-classic Donnie Darko stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a troubled, sleep-walking teen who is insistent in challenging authority and who is often visited by Frank, a monstrous rabbit that urges Donnie to perform dangerous and destructive pranks.
A haunting work of loneliness, alienation and the universal desire for companionship and meaning that’s wrapped in a guise of understated ‘80s nostalgia and head-spinning science fiction mythology, Donnie Darko is a film you shouldn’t miss.
What makes Donnie Darko especially fascinating is its take on multiple realities and universes. The film explores concepts of imploding universes, black holes and alternate timelines. It leaves most scratching their heads and itching for an immediate second viewing. Richard Kelly stated that the film has varying interpretations, which is why the film is still analysed and debated about to this day.
9) The Matrix
A smartly crafted combination of stimulating action and mind-bending philosophy, The Matrix is a film that throws our perceived reality into question. The film’s premise finds Neo (Keanu Reeves), an office-worker by day, computer hacker by night, who is told about the grand illusion. That is, the reality as we know it is false, a simulated and constructed reality in which mankind is unknowingly imprisoned.
The film is an allegory for the concept of a spiritual awakening. Neo is woken up to the fact that he’s been enslaved to the system, the matrix, his entire life. He is re-taught about his unlimited potential as a creator-being, and stands up against the dark forces which impose humanity. Amazing in every sense, The Matrix has a lot to offer, with the potential to change the way you understand the world we live in.
8) Waking Life
Absurd, transporting, and strikingly original, Waking Life poses many life-changing questions, such as ‘What are dreams and what is reality?’ Within the animated film, the line between the dream-state and reality become blurred as the protagonist wanders through various scenarios and interacts with an eclectic cast of characters.
Each character throws science and philosophy into question, and as the main character continues to experience the extended dream, he begins to worry he will not awaken.
Humans and inanimate details are sometimes quite realistic, even recognizable (such as Ethan Hawke) but the computer “painting” can give subjects forms, movements and dimensions that are wildly exaggerated, limber and stylized in cartoon-like fashion. The movie looks like an LSD trip, and is a cult classic that could find a spot in everyone’s top ten list.
7) Cloud Atlas
Colossal in scale, Cloud Atlas follows 6 interwoven story lines that span hundreds of years. The official synopsis describes it as “an exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.”
Cloud Atlas’s prevalent theme delves into the theory of reincarnation, which boasts that an eternal aspect of our self, the soul, experiences any number of lives incarnating here on Earth. The film also explores the concept of karma and the karmic cycle, suggesting that our actions in one lifetime may reverberate into the next.
Although the critic consensus is mixed for Cloud Atlas, one must applaud the film for tackling an unconventional theory such as reincarnation as well as a massively ambitious story line.
6) Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring is a Korean film that follows a Buddhist monk and his journey at a monastery that floats on a lake in a pristine forest. The story follows the monk as he passes through the seasons of his life, from childhood to old age.
Each changing season act as beautiful metaphors and lesson that the main character is experiencing. The film is very quiet, but the breathtaking imagery speaks for itself. Although the story has only a handful of characters and everything takes place in a small area, it encompasses a surprisingly large chunk of the human experience, including lust, love, jealousy, murder, suicide and redemption. It has important things to say about the difficulty of teaching and the elusiveness of wisdom.
This film is about learning from one’s mistakes and becoming a better person by seeking wisdom.
In a number of Eastern faiths, samsara literally means “continuous flow,” referring obliquely to the ongoing cycle of life and death, decay and renewal.
Samsara, the film, turns that idea into a sprawling concept, a continuous flow of images of the natural world and the human tide that dominates it. The film envelops the audience with a barrage of diverse imagery that shifts rapidly from one locale and one theme to the next.
Through watching the continuous imagery, we are given the chance to truly observe our world with utmost presence, something we tend not do in our fast-paced culture. It’s a journey through life and death, and a film which may give you a new perspective on the human experience.
Detachment is a chronicle of one month in the lives of several high school teachers, administrators and students through the eyes of a substitute teacher named Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody). Barthes’ method of imparting vital knowledge to his temporary students is interrupted by the arrival of three women in his life — the damaged and naïve prostitute Erica, a fellow teacher and a troubled teen named Meredith.
These women all have profound effects on Barthes’ life, forcing him to both re-discover aspects of his own personality, and to come to terms with both the tragic suicide of his mother and the impending death of his grandfather.
Henry impacts his students’ lives and makes them more focused and attentive, but he alone can only do so much. The film is a character study of one man, and a social commentary on the failing education and social systems.
Her follows Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely introverted middle-aged man who hears of the new OS1, the world’s first artificial intelligent operating system. When Theodore meets Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), the charming female voice of his OS1, he soon finds himself drawn to her romantically. As he becomes closer to Samantha, Theodore must decipher where his desire to be with her is really coming from.
There are many themes in Her that parallel the issues of our current technology-obsessed culture. We’ve become so attached to our phones, laptops and tablets that we’ve begun to lose touch with an essential aspect of life, authentic human interaction. Her reveals how technology is propelling isolation and loneliness to a scary degree, something we all should consider.
2) Fight Club
Fight Club teaches its viewer many things. A big lesson realized from watching the film is the emptiness that exists within consumerism and materialism. It’s also a film which questions our attachment to identity -are we really who we believe ourselves to be? The film shocks its viewer when we discover that the ‘revolution’ which has been building up is a mere satire constructed to teach the main character a massive lesson about the state of humanity.
1) Life Is Beautiful
Life is Beautiful reveals the power of optimism and perception during dark times. The story is simple: A father tries to shelter his son and family from the horrors of WWII. It teaches us how preserving our child-like innocence can protect us from the troubles life may throw at us. A simple concept that is beautifully crafted.
Obviously this list only skims the amount of life-changing films available today. I didn’t even mention documentaries, because there are too many to start listing. What are some movies or documentaries that have impacted your life?
I’m a player in a couple of Pathfinder stories, and in this one I’m a Paladin of Erastil (named Vanithal) with a 5 Wisdom. I play him as easily swayed/gullible. Most of the time I remember this, most of the time the other players don’t.
We’ve just come back to Cassomir, so Dodo (our PC halfling rogue) can catch up with his parents, who are insisting that he get married and he resists at every chance. The parents have set up a huge party with at least 4 families to essentially pitch their daughters to Dodo (now that he’s the Hero of Bellhaim). After being cleaned up, Tallmae (PC monk), Arasano (NPC cleric), Dodo, and Myself are in Dodo’s room having idle chitchat, when Dodo leaves through the window (2nd floor). I miss the perception check to even see this, but it’s pointed out by Arasano. While the DM and Dodo go through what Dodo is doing/where he’s going, Tallmae and I have a side conversation.
Tallmae: I’m going down to the party to get some food. I hope they have crab cakes. (yes, he’s referencing Wedding Crashers)
Me: I…I don’t think we can.
Tallmae: Why not?
Me: Well, yes we’re officially guests here. They’ve allowed us to clean up, we have a place for the night, and we’re invited to the party. But, we’re here because of Dodo. If Dodo’s not here, I don’t think we can go to the party. It wouldn’t be right.
Tallmae (sensing I’m going to mess up his chance at some decent food): It’s fine, he just went to get a present.
Me (even I’m skeptical about THAT): A present. By leaving through a 2nd story window.
Tallmae: Well, he CAN’T go through all the people downstairs and out the front door. Then it wouldn’t be a surprise.
Me (accepting that answer as completely logical): You know, you’re right! That makes sense.
Tallmae, OOC, likely wasn’t expecting me to buy that so easily, turns his head stifling his laughter.
Later, at the party, Dodo’s father finds me.
DodoDad (DM): Have you seen Dodo?
Me: Not since he left.
Dad: When did he leave?
Me (after checking with DM): 3 hours ago.
Dad (getting exasperated): 3 hours? Where did he go?
Me: Tallmae said he went to go get a present.
Dad (in a “you don’t think that’s suspicious?” tone): …for 3 hours?
Me: I dunno. Maybe he’s trying to sneak back in. That’s why he left out the 2nd story window, so it could be a surprise. He can’t just come through the front door, you know.
The dad just facepalms, and the party quickly ends, with Arasano suggesting to me we grab our gear and leave quickly. Tallmae does too, after pocketing some “phenomenal” crab cakes.
