Words: 3349 words. Yikes. I’m sorry.

—————————————————————————

Don’t look down. Don’t look down (y/n).

You were repeating this mantra in your head as you were walking across an unsteady bridge. Mind you it was much too high for your liking for something of this structure. The thing is heights don’t really bother you, if you were on something stable or sturdy. This was neither and that didn’t sit well with you.

“Percival you need to hurry up!” Merlin’s voice echoed in your ear.

“Working on it Merlin,” You said.

So, continuing that mantra, you made your way across the bridge and to the site of you mission. Which was to save Eggsy. Cause for some reason he wouldn’t have sex with the target, and she was super pissed. Leading her to taking him to this hidden but extravagant amazon mansion.

Part, if not all of you was glad that he didn’t sleep with her. Only because of you very obvious crush on him. One that everyone but him knew about. Roxy had even flat out told him that you liked him when you weren’t in the room, but he still didn’t do anything about it. So that bring you to three weeks ago.

You gave up on him. You were still practically head over heels for him, but you pushed those feelings to the side and began dating your current boyfriend, Logan. Logan was nearly everything you wanted in a guy. Smart, funny, charming, loyal, and very attractive. He had these beautiful blue-green eyes that made you melt, and floppy brown hair, with a clean-shaven face. He treated you right, and made you feel very loved. He made you happy, but he wasn’t Eggsy. But who are you to be saying these things when Eggsy wasn’t yours to begin with?

Getting out of your own head, you made your way to the side of the building. You had no intel going in, so you prayed for the best as you snuck inside through an open window. You were in a bedroom and it was massive. It had to have been the room of the bitch who took Eggsy. Noticing a feminine figure laying down, you took the opportunity to cuff her to the headboard and place your hand around her throat. She giggled when the handcuffs clicked around her wrists, but turned over to see you and your extremely pissed off face. So naturally she screamed. There goes the element of surprise to anyone else in the mansion. So you cut to the chase.

“Where’s Eggsy,” You said.

“Who?” She replied looking absolutely clueless.

“The man you took two nights ago.”

“You mean Thomas?”

“Where. Is. He.” You punctuated each word with the tightening of your hand as you were losing patience.

Before she could answer someone else entered the room. You turned your head to see,

“Logan?”

“(Y/n)? What are you doing here?”

That was when you noticed the lack of clothes he was wearing. Shirtless with a towel hanging dangerously low on his hips, and his hair still damp from a shower.

“Question is what are you doing here?” Your hand relaxed around the bitches throat. That was when she took the chance to actually speak up.

“Do you know her babe?” She asked. Babe? BABE!

“That’s my girlfriend,” He said coolly.

“You motherfucker!” You yelled.

You lunged for him, and used your leg and wrapped it around his neck, knocking him out. You turned back to the woman, eyes darkened with rage you stalked over to her and punched her in the face. Not only did she kidnap Eggsy, she was fucking your boyfriend.

“Now where the fuck is he!” You said.

“Ask your boyfriend,” She smirked.

“You fucking cunt!” You punched her again, but before you could land another hit, Logan’s arms wrapped around you and he threw you over his shoulder. You kept hitting and kicking him, but he only laughed. You calmed down just enough to ask him the same question you asked him earlier.

“What are you doing here Logan?”

“That’s just what I’m about to show you, as you’ll be the next part of it (Y/n),” He said with an evil laugh that you have never heard come out of his mouth before.

Where was the Logan you knew? The Logan who you cared about, the one who you began to fall in love with? You were silent as you thought of what you were going to say next.

“How long have you been cheating on me?” The words hurt for you to say.

“The entire time,” The moment those words left his mouth your heart shattered.

It was bad enough that you caught him cheating, but to hear him say that absolutely killed you. To feel that you were never enough for him that he needed somebody else to be happy.

“We’re here,” He said. “Now don’t run darling or I’ll have to hurt you.”

He grinned devilishly at you then left. Not that he’s already hurt you today. So you looked around and saw disfigured bodies organized and sculpted to be like a piece of art. You stared at the bloodied bodied is awe and horror. Until a faint groan caught your attention. Strapped to a chair in the center of the room was Eggsy. You ran to him and checked his pulse, it was steady but weak.

“Merlin, are you getting this?” You said.

“Yes Percival. Lancelot and I are on our way. Hold tight.”

You turned your attention back to Eggsy.

“Come on Eggsy wake up,” You said and tried waking him by shaking his shoulder.

That action earned you another groan. At least he’s responding. Even if he’s not opening his eyes. Which changed when Logan returned to the room and slammed the door behind him.

Enraged he yelled, “Do you know him?”

“He’s my partner at work that I told you about.”

“He’s Eggsy?” He said and you nodded.

“I know, I just wanted to hear you say it,” He smirked and left the room once more.

Anger once again started to build up inside you, and you stood up and were about to leave the room when you heard a weak voice behind you.

“(Y/n)? What’cha doin’ ‘ere?” Eggsy slurred.

You finally got a good look at his battered face. To think that the person you were dating did this to your best friend just about killed you. You saw him try to focus on you, but was having a rough time doing so.

“Here to save your stupid ass,” You said.

He rolled his eyes at your statement and then tried to smirk. The split lip and black eye made that impossible without hurting himself.

That’s when you came back to your senses. Looking around more closely this time, you notice the body sculpture was in the shape of a throne. That had a staircase leading up to it with bodies reaching up towards the throne. There were smaller thrones to the left and right of the main one. All composed of dead bodies. How many people have they killed? Why did they do such a horrific thing?

Those questions would have to be answered later. Cause you needed to focus on getting yourself and Eggsy out of there before the two of you were a part of that throne.

Turning your attention back to Eggsy, you took the pin holding your hair back and sliced through the ropes holding him to the chair. Once they were cut, he slumped over and started to fall asleep. You slapped his cheek and told him to stay awake. When you tried to get him up, you were met with resistance on his part.

“’M fine (y/n), I’ll wait for Merlin. Get outta ‘ere,” Eggsy said half awake. “I just wanna take a nap. Night love.”

He plopped back down on the chair and closed his eyes. You had enough of this shit, so you backhanded him across his face. His head snapping to the other side as you cupped his jaw and forced him to look at you.

“Don’t you dare close your eyes Eggsy Unwin,” You said.

“Come on love, it’s only a nap,” He whined.

Before you could reply, Logan re-entered the room. He smirked at first, until he saw you tending to Eggsy. His eyes slightly closed, nostrils flared, and a harsh scowl crossed his lips.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?!” He exclaimed.

“None of your business you cheating asshole,” You said.

“Oh, I think that it’s my business (y/n). You are my girlfriend-”

“Ex.”

“Excuse me?”

You turned to stare at him as you clarified, “Ex as in you’re my ex-boyfriend.”

As soon as the last syllable left your lips, he rushed towards you and grabbed your shoulders. Gripping them tight enough that you could feel the bruises forming beneath your skin. While his eyes pierced through yours.

“Since when do you think that? Since I started doing this for us? Creating this place where you would be immortalized by my side as I take over the world?”

You remained silent and clenched your jaw, cause who wouldn’t after what you’ve found out?

“Since she realized that you’re a dick,” Eggsy said.

You chuckled and Eggsy grinned back at you. Logan didn’t find that funny one bit and released his grip on you as he stormed over to Eggsy. Who by the way was still grinning like an idiot. Logan pulled his arm back ready to punch him in the jaw, but before he could hit him you lunged towards him and tackled him. Logan’s eyes, now full of rage, were directed towards you. He went to throw a punch, and you easily dodged it by quickly moving your head to the left. The two of you quickly stood up and taking his slightly slower response, you brought your right leg up to kick his left side. He slumped from the impact. You then took off your bracelet and quickly attached it to his wrist and flipped the tiny switch. You stood back as you watch Logan’s body seizure from the electricity coursing through his veins. You gotta love the gadgets you get to use.

Looking back over to Eggsy, you saw him smiling the best he could with his split lip and other facial injuries as you went back over to help him up.

“What’s that look for?” You said.

“Watching my knight in shining armor being a total badass,” He said still smiling towards you.

“Seriously Galahad? I don’t think many knights have boobs,” You rolled your eyes jokingly as he laughed.

“But the whole role reversal thing with me being-”

“The damsel in distress. I know,” He started coughing.

You looped your arm around his waist while he slung his arm around your shoulders as you made your way out of the room. The two of you were oddly silent. With the silence, you let your mind wander. Like how toned Eggsy felt beneath the tattered shirt, the amount of heat radiation off him. To how it would feel to be pinned underneath him. A crackling in your ear brought you out of your thoughts before you were too far gone, and it was Merlin announcing his arrival and to meet him outside.

Hobbling your way outside, the pair in the plane rushed to your aid so they could get you the help that you needed.

“You two look like hell,” Merlin said.

“Merlin! Don’t tell that to their faces!” Roxy said.

You would’ve laughed, but you weren’t in the mood to after the events that occurred today. You just sat there with a blank expression on your face as you made it back to the mansion. They rushed Eggsy off the plane, and you followed them wanting to make sure that Eggsy is all right.

Roxy pulled you aside and told you to, “Get some rest (Y/n), I’ll get Eggsy to medical.”

You nodded and started to walk towards your room you had for situations like this where you just couldn’t make it home. Which was more often than you’d like it to be. Before you got too far, a hand gently but firmly grabbed your arm. Your body tensed until you heard who it was.

“Relax (Y/n). It’s just me,” Merlin said and you felt relieved. “Are you alright?”

Merlin was like a second father to you. He looked out for you as much as he could.

“’M fine Merlin.”

“(y/n).”

“I’m going to bed. Night.”

You quickly made your way to your room. Closing the door behind you and flopping down onto your bed. You wanted to cry, but couldn’t and just felt broken and hopeless. Looking to your nightstand you saw two framed pictures.

One was of you and Logan, smiling and looking into each others eyes when you were walking through the park after a dinner date one night. You looked so in love and happy. Just taunting you with the new revelations of the day. Grabbing the gun you still had strapped to your side, you pulled it out, aimed it and fired. Your arm fell back to your side as the gun fell out of our loose grip.

Banging was heard outside your door. Merlin, who was accompanied by Roxy and Eggsy, who was cleared by medical mere minutes before the shot was heard.

“(Y/n)! Open the fucking door!” Roxy yelled.

“(Y/n)!” Merlin yelled.

“Love! (Y/n), please open the door,” Eggsy pleaded.

The three continued it, that was until they realized that you never locked your door when you entered. They busted in to see shattered glass, your discarded gun on the floor, blood dripping down your hand. Eggsy ran over to your side, and the moment when his skin made contact with yours, you shot up. That when he noticed the picture frame that had a bullet hole where Logan’s head should be.

His face fell into your mattress as his shoulders were shaking with silent sobs. That was when you noticed the panicked and worried looks that Merlin and Roxy gave you. Not really wanting to talk, you turned your head towards the frame. The two of them got the hint and visibly relaxed. Then leaving the room to give you and Eggsy some time alone. The two of you stayed there in silence.

“’M fine Eggsy,” You said and his head shot up as his beautiful eyes were puffy and bloodshot as his face had that one crinkle under his eyes when he was truly terrified.

He brought his hands up to your face and cradled it between his rough hands. Looking you right in the eyes.

“Don’t ya ever scare me like that again love,” He said.

“That’s kinda hard to do with-” He cut you off by pressing his lips against yours.

He pulled away before you could do anything about it.

“Got it?” He whispered.

His hot breath fanned across your face. You nodded and leaned into feel his lips against yours once more. The two of you were content with just gliding your lips across each other’s until you felt and uncomfortable pressure between your legs. Squeezing your thighs together, you pressed your bodies together even more.

Eggsy’s tongue traced the seam of your lips, you grant him access as you let your tongues intertwine. He slowly rose from his spot by your bed so he was laying on top of you. His hands then left your cheeks and went to your hips. Gripping them lightly and pulling them closer to you. A moan escaped your lips as you felt the growing bulge nudging up against your thigh. That was when everything became too real for you. You quickly pushed him away and couldn’t look him in the eyes.

“I…I..I can’t do this Eggsy,” You said in the quietest voice you could muster.

“(y/n). Love,” Eggsy said while he tried to look you in the eye.

“Please don’t Eggsy. Can you just leave me? Please?” You asked.

The room was silent after you said those words. You still couldn’t meet his gaze. That’s when you felt his hands cup your cheeks once more. You screwed your eyes shut, refusing to make eye contact with him. You could feel him move your face to meet his.

“(Y/n). Please open your eyes,” Eggsy’s voice matched your own in volume.

“I can’t,” You said and he chuckled.

“Yes ya can (y/n), now open those beautiful eyes for me.”

“No Eggsy. I can’t. I can’t do this,” Your eyes shot open and saw the utter devastation and heartbreak in his eyes. “I want to so so badly, believe me. But everything is still so fresh. And…and I don’t want to do this if you don’t feel the same. Please don’t say anything and just leave me be until I – until it doesn’t feel so fresh.”

Tears were falling down your face. More fell when Eggsy’s hands left your face and he made his way to the door. The sound of the door opening never came. He stood there, still facing the door as the tension in the room grew thicker by the second. Eggsy then turned around, chest huffed out, jaw set, and a determined look in his eyes.

“No,” He said forcefully.

“What?” You managed to squeak out.

“I’m not leaving you. I’ll never leave you again! Do ya know what it’s like to love someone you could never have, or never deserve? Then to have them tell you they don’t think you feel the same way about them? Cause I love ya so fucking much (Y/n) (L/n)!” He said and started to walk towards you. “I’ve been in love with you for so long (Y/n), and I thought that Rox was shittn’ ‘round with me when she said that you liked me. Guess she was right. But once I saw ya with Logan, I knew that I couldn’t compete.”

He had made his way back to your side. Your mouth was wide open in shock as you heard his proclamation.

“He was perfect for you, well until today, but-”

“You could never compete with him,” You whispered.

“What?” He asked.

“You never had to compete with anyone Eggsy. It was always you. Always.”

Eggsy beamed at you. You could feel the happiness radiating off him as he swooped down and connected your lips once again You were smiling into the kiss as your hands were tangled in his hair, bringing his mouth closer to yours.

On one particular tug, you pulled back in pain. Remembering that there were still glass shards in your hand. You smiled sheepishly.

“Wanna fix me up?” You said.

“I’d love to, but I’d get too distracted by ya love.”

Wordlessly, Eggsy picked you up bridal style and carried you down multiple corridors to reach the medial rooms. Upon entering one of the rooms, you were greeted by Merlin.

“What’s up Doc?” Eggsy grinned from ear to ear.

“Cheeky bastard. What did you need?” He asked.

“(y/n)’s hand needs stichin’ up.”

“No it doesn’t. Just take out the damn glass yourself Galahad. Don’t forget to bandage her hand up as well,” Merlin said then left.

“Come on you big baby. You can do it,” You teased.

That resulted in him laying you down on the bed and grabbing the supplies he needed. Once he started removing the glass, he would kiss the top of your hand in each spot he had just removed the shard from. So, a five-minute job turned into a 30 minute ordeal.

Once it was all taken care of, you made it back to your room. You cleaned up your mess from earlier, and then oh so graciously flopped onto your bed completely exhausted from today.

“Night Eggsy,” He laughed as you hadn’t bothered to change clothes still, and that your face was right in the pillow.

“Night love,” He replied and kissed the top of your head. You fell asleep with a smile on your face, and a life a little better than it was at the beginning of the day.

newt-fruit-main  asked:

Hey! I am very pro-AZA facilities, but I am a little bit concerned about your recent comment on sanctuary breeding. Sanctuaries and rescues are NOT receiving genetically valuable animals, usually they come with no genetic history, and are inbred for color morphs or mixed species (i.e. tigers)! This wouldn't be smart breeding for conservation like the SSPs! (1/?)

The animals they receive should essentially be considered like the excess domestic dog/cat populations in the US (only big and dangerous), because there truly are more than there are available suitable homes for. The argument of breeding for conservation in captivity has to be done in line with responsible breeding that’s part of a larger networked plan, because roadside zoos breed all kinds of animals irresponsibly (filling up the sanctuaries) and claim conservation.

Most of what you’re saying is true, and what you’re most concerned about re: the SSP mention is going to be an issue in the future. However, there are a couple things I want to respond to because they’re going to be super important for people who care about big cats to understand in the near future, in regards to conservation and the sanctuary industry and animal rights interactions. I’m gonna break those down below, but it’s not intended as a smackdown - you just gave me a great opening to talk about something I’ve been realizing I need to write about. To give you some context: I’ve spent the last couple months digging into the histories of sanctuaries and rescues as an industry and studying a lot of the exotic animal legislation that has been proposed/passed in the last couple decades. That means I’ve been researching the evolution of legislation and how animals move (both around the US, and between types of placement) in response to it, and what legal actions or public petitions influence those movements. The holistic picture is… interesting.

First, though, I want to talk about a couple of the statements you made - because they’re super common in sanctuary messaging right now and, most importantly, have started showing up in legislation and lobbying regarding big cats recently.

The lack of known lineage for big cats coming into sanctuaries and rescues was really only accurate in the 90s and potentially early 2000s, and from what I can really was at latest an issue up until 2007. The 90s was the period when the big cat population in private ownership in the US was out of control and rescue began to be a big deal - hence the formation of the current major big cat sanctuary organizations. The last large number of big cats of “unknown origin or lineage” left private hands and went into sanctuaries between 2004-2007, as people prepared for the full enforcement of the Captive Wildlife Safety Act (which, among other things, prohibited moving cats across state lines). After that point in time, the need for rescue - by which I mean hoarder situations or animals that truly were not receiving appropriate care, not exotic pet politics framed as abusive - dropped off sharply because anyone who hadn’t given up their big cats prior to 2007 was very aware that the CWSA meant that they were responsible for keeping those animals for life because they could no longer be easily transported to a new owner or another facility. So, a decade after that, animals coming into rescue are generally coming from either pet situations or are confiscations from private facilities. The people who are currently breeding big cats outside of AZA accreditation - regardless of what else you think about them or their practices - are smart enough to understand that inbreeding can occur and that tracking bloodlines is important. All of the exotic pet communities are pretty small and tight-knit in the US, so I can’t believe that there’s no known lineage for the animals currently ending up in sanctuaries. It might not go back more than a couple generations, or might not be something the sanctuaries are given, but it’s got to exist.

I’m also really skeptical about the whole “there are more big cats than there are suitable homes for” messaging that’s omnipresent in the rescue and sanctuary industry right now, for two reasons. One, there’s no agreement on what a “suitable home” for a big cat is: the Animal Welfare Act is the federal set of requirements for appropriate care, but sanctuaries and animal rights groups consistently condemn places that meet that criteria, and only AZA likes the idea of AZA standards being a requirement for a suitable home, since most facilities don’t have the funding and mission to become part of the AZA. This means there’s no other set of standards that sanctuaries and rescues can point to to back up a claim about a situation for a big cat being ‘not good enough’. Since sanctuaries continue exist because they house confiscated animals, in the absence of data or concrete standards used to quantify a bad situation, any statement they make about big cat quality of care is inherently embroiled in politics.

Two, the current numbers for captive big cats in the US just do not make sense. They’re all over the place and appear to be estimations because there aren’t primary source citations in any document - legislative or media - that I’ve found past 2003, and even that’s iffy.

Let’s just look at tigers, for instance. In 2003, a paper Nyhus and Tillson estimated that there were anywhere between 5000-12,000 captive tigers in private hands alone in the US. The excuse given for such a huge potential range: the authors think most pet tigers would be kept illegally and not reported. It goes on to say the most likely estimates are between 7000-9000, but following up on those sources simply gives me news articles where the one of the authors is quoted about those numbers - there’s literally no data or study cited to support that. Okay, so, hold on, we’re guesstimating in a scientific paper about the existence of multiple thousands of tigers, multiple times more than exist in the wild, because of an utter absence of data and the determination that people lie? That doesn’t seem right.  But, then, in 2008 a report on tiger trafficking done by Fish and Wildlife said there are “as many as” 5000 tigers in the US - total, including in zoos and sanctuaries as well as private hands. They were using data from a single 2005 study, which estimated 3349 tigers in “private” hands (2120 in USDA licensed facilities that were not considered zoos or sanctuaries and 1129 in non-exhibition situations). That’s a drastic difference from 2003-2005, and only the 2005 citation shows evidence of actually having data backing it. Now, fast forward to the last couple of years. In 2014, the World Wildlife Fund states that of the 5000 tigers it thinks are in the US, 4700 of those tigers are in private hands. In 2015, the founder of the sanctuary group Tigers in America stated that he thinks there are actually upwards of 7000 tigers in the US with no mention of location. Neither of these statements have any sort of citation, and those numbers don’t make sense. It’s been a decade since the last mention I can find of an actual study of the locations of big cats in the US, so does that mean the numbers that are now being used in legislation and advocacy efforts are simply estimates based on how many pet tigers these organizations think people aren’t reporting? Not to mention, the numbers don’t make sense - the Captive Wildlife Safety Act, as well as many pieces of state-and local-level legislation restricting big cat ownership have majorly restricted the ownership, transport, and breeding of big cats. How are the numbers going up as legislation gets more restrictive? If anyone can show me actual data on the number of big cats in captivity in the US post-2005, I’ll happily update this post - until then, I remain pretty skeptical about this supposed surplus of big cats because after months of searching I’ve found no primary data anywhere to support it.

Next, let’s chat about roadside zoos for a second. If you’re not aware of why I think that appellation is outdated and meaningless to the general public, please take a second to read this article I wrote about the topic. This is especially pertinent to this discussion, as many facilities outside of AZA (frequently referred to as roadside zoos) directly contribute to the success of SSP programs - see Mill Mountain Zoo’s success with Pallas Cats and Red Wolves, and Tanganyika Wildlife Park’s success with Clouded Leopard breeding. Not all non-AZA places are of the same quality - some do still promote breeding color morphs or talk about white tigers as a separate subspecies - but it’s inaccurate to say that all roadside zoos don’t contribute to conservation or just “fill up sanctuaries” with excess animals.

Okay. Now, on to the SSP and sanctuaries comment. Most of the cats coming into sanctuaries right now are either previous pets or animals confiscated after animals rights investigations, as mentioned above. Right now, AR groups aren’t going after places that participate in SSPs… but that’s not going to last. For years, HSUS has been campaigning to close down every zoo that isn’t AZA. You can see that in their rhetoric, and in the fact that in every single piece of legislation and media they right they directly contrast how AZA does things with the horrors of roadside zoos. As of earlier this month, the CEO of HSUS made a statement indicating that AZA is partnering with them to help police the rest of the zoo industry - and the biggest focus that HSUS wants to see from AZA is help shutting down roadside zoos, according to a representative who spoke on HSUS’ behalf at the 2016 AZA national conference. It’s convenient that there’s no operant definition for “roadside zoo” published anywhere in HSUS literature since 1980, isn’t there? (See the linked article above for that discussion). This leads us to the question of what happens to the big cats in external facilities that participate in SSPs when animal rights organizations start going after facilities they deem “roadside zoos” or those they condemn for simply not being AZA. Somehow I sincerely doubt they’ll deviate from the long-term plan of shutting them all down just because they happen to support a decent big cat conservation program. When HSUS lobbies to have a facility investigated, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF, the legal branch of the AR organizations) get involved with advocating to have animals removed from a facility, there’s always a sanctuary or two ready and willing to take those poor animals -  and they’re all ones that are tightly associated with the animal rights organizations and decry the breeding of their residents. So yes, I do think we’re going to see genetically valued animals “rescued” from facilities where they were part of legitimate, planned breeding programs in the near future and put in sanctuaries where they can no longer contribute to the conservation of their species.

I also don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the animal rights organizations will eventually start going after AZA, once all the other zoos have been driven out of business or had their animals confiscated. The head of BCR has said publicly that she wants to see all cats removed from zoos and in sanctuaries by 2025 - and that she plans on doing it by first turning the public against roadside zoos, and then by taking in all the big cats the zoos abandon after she convinces the public that they’re fundamentally immoral for having them. That lines up pretty neatly with the current rhetoric coming out of sanctuaries and animal rights organizations about zoos right now, and hey, BCR and HSUS and ALDF are all sponsors of all the recent big cat welfare petitions to the USDA and heavily involved in lobbying for congressional legislation like the Big Cat Public Safety Act. Still not convinced? In the newest iteration of the BCPSA, AZA-accredited facilities are no longer accorded their historical exemption from the proposed regulations.

Big cat sanctuaries may currently only have cats who aren’t considered valuable to conservation programs, but I don’t think it’ll stay that way. All of the animals who came into the sanctuaries because of the Captive Wildlife Safety Act in 2007 (along with a ton of funding, because pretty faces and sob stories are great for fundraising) are reaching the end of their natural lifespans. If the sanctuaries want to continue to exist, they have to get new animals from somewhere - and you can see them beginning to turn against the zoo industry and demand ownership of their animals. It’s scary, but it’s real, and it looks like it’s starting already - in late 2016, ALDF notified Landry’s Downtown Aquarium (an AZA facility) of their intent to sue for removal of their tigers under the Endangered Species Act if Landry’s did not send the cats to an accredited sanctuary.

Hi Soldier. Are there soldiers in active with chronic pain issues? What would qualify as a soldier not being able to do their job if in pain? If medication works Ok enough, can they remain in active? Thanks lots for your blog, xxx :)

Oh good; I finally get to talk about being on profile!

Tons of soldiers have chronic pain issues. Those who can still work but who just can’t do some physical things might just be put on a profile. Say for example you’ve got someone who’s got chronic knee pain, like, completely random example, me.* They can do sit ups and push-ups just fine, but running and jumping is no good for them. So after they get evaluated, their primary care provider can put them on profile, which in this context specifically refers to those who have some physical limitation who have paperwork to show what their limitations are and what activities they can perform.

You can read the DD Form 3349 right here for reference.

As you can see, it indicates everything the soldier can do based on their physical limitations. Having the paperwork is very important because it’s basically doctors orders in your pocket. Sergeants are notorious for ignoring profiles and pushing their soldiers to do things they shouldn’t be doing. Once we had an NCO who flat out refused to accept that someone was on profile until he was shown the actual physical paperwork, and not only that, but unless you brought your paperwork with you to P.T. every morning so that he could confirm you were still on profile, he would make you do shit you weren’t supposed to do. Another NCO I knew would actually read his soldiers’ paperwork, figure out like the one exercise the doctor hadn’t forbidden, and making you do it.

For example, with knee pain, you’re excused from most running and jumping activities. To get around that, this NCO would make those soldiers do eight-count push-ups. This consists of getting down, doing two complete push-ups, and then getting back to your feet. That’s a full rep, and we’d do ten or twenty or thirty or however many was required.

Technically eight-count push-ups are an acceptable exercise, but they’re painful for someone with knee pain due to the motions you have to take to get up and to get down, (they’re a very specific motion; it’s not like you can just get down and get up however is comfortable) and unless your NCO was really cool you probably couldn’t get away with saying something like “I can’t do this; it’s too hard.” Your NCO would probably tell you to suck it up, or if they were being a real dick about it they’d mock you and say “Your profile doesn’t say you can’t do these!”

Of course, our primary care providers are officers who don’t realize that’s what it’s like, so when getting put on profile it was often necessary for soldiers to sorta talk their physicians through what to put on the form. I remember once before I was on permanent profile, I sprained my ankle and was on temporary profile instead. My physician tried to get away with saying I shouldn’t perform “running or similar activities,” which of course doesn’t include jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and all other such nonsense that’s painful on a bad ankle. So I had to have him basically write “all physical activity that would aggravate the sprain” to ensure I was covered and wouldn’t be forced to hurt myself more.

There are some soldiers who we just refer to as “broken.” Basically, their whole body is broke. They’ve got something going on that prevents them from doing essentially anything. No heavy gear or equipment, no running, no jumping, no physical exercise in general. I’d like to say that there’s usually not going to be more than one or two of these types per unit, but my unit was especially rough and we had six of them, three of them being reclassed from combat MOSs like infantry and so on. Of course, no matter how capable these guys are at their job, the unit in general doesn’t like them because they’re incapable of doing the hard labor and morning P.T. that everyone else has to do, and the army puts a lot of value on how strong you are and how hard you work.

That’s not to say that such soldiers are useless. They wind up in our orderly rooms often, basically at a desk doing paperwork all day, and sometimes if you have a job like mine that’s basically just sitting and staring at a radar and typing up reports, you can get away with just continuing to do your regular job. However, if you’re in an MOS or some other unit that has less leeway, you’ll probably either be medically discharged or reclassed to a lighter MOS. You can’t have a paratrooper who can’t parachute. That just doesn’t make sense.

Pain meds are of course provided by the army and you don’t have to pay for them. There is ongoing care for chronic pain issues, so if a med isn’t working for you or you need a higher dosage, it’s possible to do that, although whether it happens in a timely fashion is another question.

For one of our guys, his medication made him extremely drowsy shortly after taking, so he was actually allowed even on duty to go off and get a little sleep. A lot of people didn’t like this, but it was better than not letting him have the meds. The army can’t force you to take medication either, so we had a few dodos who wouldn’t take their meds until it was practically an emergency sometimes.

In short:
• Soldiers very frequently suffer from chronic pain
• They must be on profile to be considered for accommodations, meaning they have to be seen by a doctor.
• Soldiers can remain active duty, but extreme cases might warrant a medical discharge.
• The army is ableist af and is convinced that half the people with chronic pain are faking because reasons  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ **

William Christopher, Father Mulcahy on 'MASH,' dies at 84
William Christopher, the actor best known for his role as Father John Mulcahy on the hit TV show “M*A*S*H,” died on Saturday, his family confirmed to our sister station KABC.
The Adventures of Star Girl and Alien-Friend

the year is 3349. earth has been inhospitable for hundreds of years. humans are extinct.

except. in the year 2020, scientists developed one way time travel. you could go, but you couldn’t return. 2020 was the midst of a terrible war (do not be concerned - you can choose any point in human history and say it is the midst of a terrible war and be correct) so many people volunteered for this fate. most chose to only go forward a short number of years, and were paid exorbitant amounts of money. but some desperate, lonely, curious people chose to travel farther.

the locations and dates of appearances of these human travelers are of high value. humans, it is said, are one the cleverest and resilient species. their intelligence and ingenuity outpaced their resources, and it killed them - but to think, there was once a species so brilliant and strange and wondrous they killed themselves straining towards answers they didn’t even have the questions for.

space travel and technology has stagnated. the intergalactic council is convinced humans are the solution to their problems, and they recruit humans as soon as they appear, do everything they can to snatch them up. none of them say no. why would they - they’re alone in a strange world, they have nothing to lose.

but there is an alien. she is young and afraid and does not thirst for adventure. but there is a piece of information that has been passed down from generation to generation - the time and date and location of a human time traveler. and people in her family died for this secret, she has a duty to be there. so she takes her family’s old junker space ship and flies to earth, and follows the coordinates and waits.

and a young woman pops out, a human girl. and she is bright and curious and eager and only a little bit afraid, and it takes the alien thirty seconds to realized every ridiculous story she’s heard about humans has to be true. “do you want to go on an adventure?” she asks the girl. she has a space junker and a meager savings, and this human would be offered the best of everything if she agreed to work for the council.

but the human with eyes like dying stars takes her hand and says “yes” and so they begin their intergalactic road trip, traveling across the universe and leaving every place they touch a little different, a little wilder, a little more uncertain - a little more human.

The Prophet (salallaahu `alaihi wassallam) said:

“The human being can fill no container worse than his belly. Sufficient for the son of Adam are so many morsels of food as will keep his spine upright. But if he must eat more, then a third for his food, a third for his drink and a third for his breath.”

At-Tibb An-Nabawī p.20. Hadīth reported by Imām Ahmad in Al-Musnad (4/132), At-Tirmidhī (2499), Ibn Mājah (3349), and it was authenticated by Al-Albānī in Sahīh Sunan At-Tirmidhī (1939).

So the Sunnah encourages with moderate eating and not constantly indulging oneself because that eventually leads to poor health and illnesses.
