30 Day Mass Effect: Andromeda Ryder Challenge

This meme is inspired by a question in the MEFFW FB group. Someone was looking for a Ryder challenge, so I decided that maybe we needed one that dealt more with game events. It is also inspired by several 30-day character challenges that I have seen pop up over the years. I know there was a pre-release 30-day Ryder challenge that went around, but it specifically dealt only with speculative Ryder content. The aim of this one is to incorporate questions directed at a fully/partially played Ryder.

The questions below are meant to be answered as specifically, generally, or tangentially as you like. None of the questions are required by any means; I expanded and offered some direction only as a guide for those who might prefer a little more guidance than a generalized category.

Please, pardon the vagueness of some of the questions, I am trying to limit spoilers as much as possible.

If you’d be up for it, I’ll be following the tag: #30dayMEARyderChallenge. I’d love to see the other Ryders out there in the universe.

And a quick thanks to Liz for her feedback. Really appreciate it.

30 Day Character Development Challenge

Day 3 - Name one scar your character has, and tell us where it came from.

No, no, no! This isn’t how it was supposed to work! This can’t be possible! I can’t fight against someone who can rip apart dimensi-

His words cut off as the blond felt pain equal to that of a hot knife digging across his flesh. He was temporarily knocked off balance, clumsily reacquiring his footing as blood gushed out from the wound. His eyes, wide-open from the shock and burning sensation, trailed down to where the “sword” had struck.

There was so much blood… too much blood. At this rate, he would probably die.

Mitarai felt his body sway forward, and he collapsed onto his knees. Mr. Sensui… he’s… the one… He only heard about half of the words that escaped his bloody lips, and fell face-down into the puddles. While the water did partially relieve the wound’s aching, it also bit into him like frost on bare skin. The last thing he registered was Kuwabara hacking for air; so, the older boy managed to break his monster after all…

To this day, Mitarai remembers that night. He recalls the crimson stains everywhere, the burning of the cut, the sickening ripping sound his body emitted as the Dimension Sword tore through him…

Occasionally, the blond will take his shirt off in his bathroom to examine the scar - the only remains from his fight with Kuwabara - in the mirror. It still hurts occasionally, but only if he puts strain on it. Though it is years later, it is pinkish and has not reached the white color most scars end up reverting to. Mitarai assumes this is normal for such a deep wound.

Mitarai is ashamed of it. Since before Sensui, he hasn’t been able to go to a public swimming pool, the beach, or anywhere that would require him to change clothes to any degree. He didn’t want to risk anyone seeing the scar, or worse - ask him about it.

He isn’t angry with Kuwabara in the least. Mitarai knows he deserved this wound, and is reminded of his past sins every time he catches a glimpse of his bare chest in the mirror. This is the real reason for his shame at the scar - the fact that he let himself slip so far into the lies and could barely break away in time. He has sworn over and over to himself that he will never fall like that again, but he can’t ever know for sure.

Still, lately, MItarai has become a bit more brave in regards to the scar. He looks at it longer, and is thinking of going to the pool someday soon, when spring comes around again. Hagiri explained that it was a symbol of a turning point in his life.

Perhaps the sniper had a point. But should Mitarai see the scar as a memento from when he fell victim to the darkness, or a reminder that he had successfully escaped it?

[A tall, oddly puppet-like humanoid tree-creature with willow leaves for hair and bark-like skin is standing next to a much shorter androgynous person of slight build and dark curly hair. The tree-person asks quizzically, “‘Blood relative?’” The other person smiles and answers, “It means you are like family.” The tree-person insists, “But I don’t have any blood,”; and the other person answers, “It is an expression.”]

16.) Are there any blood relatives that your character is particularly close with, besides the immediate ones? Cousins, Uncles, Grandfathers, Aunts, et cetera. Are there any others that your character practically considers a blood relative?

In short, absolutely not. The family d'Escala has had a long and rich history of backdoor abuse and/or assassination attempts, and Numair’s extended family dares not break tradition. His grandmother has been a thorn in his foot since he was sentient enough to know who she was; his first cousins are spoiled and wicked. He has several aunts and uncles, but frankly they’re responsible for how mean and petty his cousins are. His grandmother’s siblings are, remarkably, very liberal; they backed Cynn Rhys in his attempt to break Aetheri’s long isolation, but after his questionable death they’ve never once stood up for Numair. (Quite possibly they just don’t want to deal with his grandmother anymore. She had a reputation in her days as Cynn for being utterly ruthless, absolutely unrelenting, and dangerously cunning and self-serving, and that sort of thing doesn’t just go away with age.)

Helygen, however, is a different story. Ne raised Numair from an infant, and is still one of the few people Numair confides in. Caring for Numair was never in nir job description; ne is actually trained as a field medic, not a pediatrician or someone who specializes in the kind of illnesses Numair has. But ne developed a kind of bond with Numair early on and spent most of nir last couple of centuries learning how to take care of him and defending him (as best that ne could) against Numair’s grandmother. Nir mild disposition and non-Aetherian values are probably responsible for Numair seeming A) nothing like his batshit family and B) somewhat personable to people who aren’t Aetherian.

29.) How does your character smell? Do they wear perfume or cologne? What are their favorite scents?

13.) What does your character’s bed look like when he/she wakes up? Are the covers off on one side of the bed, are they all curled around a pillow, sprawled everywhere? In what position might they sleep?

14.)  How does your character react to temperature changes such as extreme heat and cold?

15.) Is your character an early morning bird or a night owl?

Okay first, the ratio of Bed:Numair is important to keep in mind:

(You can tell what season it is by whether Numair is sleeping on the side closer to the fireplace or not.) (I also have a story regarding why the bed is so large and so inelaborate, but that’s for another time, hint hint.)

Numair doesn’t sleep a lot, but when he does, he goes out like a light and becomes something resembling comatose until he wakes up (on his own time. Outside stimuli are no match for him.) This is something that has always desperately worried first Helly (Numair’s surrogate parent, more or less) and later on Hawk; they’re convinced one day someone’s going to murder Numair in his sleep. He never moves while sleeping, either. Generally, if he’s sleeping on his own, the bed stays perfectly made except for the one small corner.

Sometimes, however, he sleeps like this:

Hawk, having to be the very opposite of Numair, sleeps very lightly and feverishly and flips around a lot. So it’s probably good Numair is so unresponsive; Hawk will toss and turn all night and move Numair around the bed and Numair will never wake up.

Of course Hawk snores.

Sleeping with wings is, you can imagine, kind of a pain.

A combination of bed-confining sickness and/or mind-boggling amounts of desk work mean that Numair usually sleeps just whenever he can; sometimes he’s too tired to get out of bed, sometimes he’s too busy to get to it. When left to his own devices, he adopts a kind of nap-every-few-hours-for-half-an-hour pattern. He’d rather be up during daylight, though.

Now for the biology bit: because of Aetheri’s climate, spirits have developed remarkably good homeostasis, though that doesn’t complete negate the need for outside heat sources. What’s more, Aetherians are pretty accustomed to frigid weather. But during sleep, the body loses heat much more quickly, so Numair tends to leave a fire going in the hearth in his room.

…I don’t think Numair has ever been anywhere very hot, though. But if stripping off a layer or two of clothes wasn’t an option, he’d probably try to magick his clothes to repel heat or something. He has the right attitude to be one of those spellcasters who use energie for every little thing, he just doesn’t have the physical fortitude to be wasting energy that way.

Digimon 30 Day Challenge #2

02: Favourite character

Takenouchi Sora

Sora has been my favourite character since I was a little girl. I’ve always liked that Digimon Adventure didn’t treat its female characters as cardboard “token girls” to be compared to each other or used as props in the boys’ character development. In Adventure, both Sora and Mimi have very different personalities, both are complex and strong in their own way, and the show doesn’t try to tell kids that being a “tomboy” is better than being a “princess” or vice-versa. I think this is one of the reasons why a shounen anime like Digimon was always so popular among girls.

The most interesting thing about Sora is what is underneath the surface. At first glance, she’s just a kick-ass female character, a proto-Katniss Everdeen, if you like. She’s brave, kind, level-headed, resourceful, she takes care of everyone and is constantly encouraging others. However, soon Sora’s characterisation starts to get even more interesting, especially when we get to the arc where she is separared from the group and starts questioning her crest.

By episode 36 of Adventure, everything we know about Sora is turned upside down.

[Taichi] ‘Eh… Love fits Sora perfectly!
[Sora, loudly] ‘No! It doesn’t fit me at all!
[Taichi, nervous] ‘But— you always think about others—
[Sora] ‘No, I don’t! You— you don’t really know me, so stop talking as if you do!!

Sora reveals that not even Taichi, who is her best friend and who has known her all her life, knows how she really is. Suddenly, everything we think we know about Sora is under question. Is being a “tomboy” her true self or is she just using it to rebel against her mother and what’s expected of her? Is she truly optimistic and confident or is she just putting on a brave face in order to keep everyone else from giving up? Does she really care about others or is she just being responsible? There are no definitive answers. We only sense that Sora is constantly torn between two conflicting sides of her personality: on one hand, her sense of duty and her love for others; on the other hand, her need to find herself and deal with her self-doubt. The only thing we know for sure is that Sora is pretty good at hiding her inner feelings.

I feel like crying more than anyone knows
Too clumsy to convey my feelings
I try to pretend to be strong
(lyrics from Ashita wa Motto ~Takenouchi Sora no Theme~)

When Sora finally breaks down under pressure and finds herself stuck in a dark cave that feeds on her negative emotions (a not-so-subtle metaphor for depression), it isn’t very surprising. It’s also not that difficult to understand why in 02 Sora is no longer a complete tomboy (although she still plays sports and isn’t as girly as Mimi) — we get the feeling that her adventures with Piyomon and the others made her more confident and able to accept her true self. Which is why it is even less surprising that she ends up in a relationship with Ishida Yamato, who is the only other character who goes through a similar trajectory and has the maturity and the emotional awareness to understand her personality.

I’ve always felt that Sora was one of the most underrated and misunderstood characters in Digimon. She is often seen as either a “boring good-girl” or a cold-hearted bitch who “friendzoned” Taichi (a result of reducing Taichi/Sora/Yamato to a stereotypical “romantic triangle” that never really existed in the context of the show). It is true that Sora was sometimes underwritten and her importance to the story was constantly reduced — she goes from being the second lead character at the beginning of the Adventure to the “sixth” of the eldest chosen children at the end of 02 — but she is still an interesting and complex character. I hope tri. will bring her more screen time and that will make the fandom give her a little more love (pun intended).

Honourable mentions: everyone’s favourite lone-wolf Ishida Yamato, adorable bad-guy slayer Takaishi Takeru, and flawless unsung hero Kido Jou.

[An androgynous figure is sitting in a wheelchair at a podium. It is raining; their hair is curly and dark, and their red clothes (a sort of tunic, with scaly armor on the shoulders) looks very heavy. They are very pale and sickly looking. The background is very foggy, but the corners of white buildings and the tops of willow trees poke through the fog. The figure is saying in a wavery voice, “Cynn Rhys left us a great war – one that we have no choice but to continue to fight. We ask – for your patience, your loyalty. Your trust in us as your Cynn.”]

10.) Can you define a turning point in your character’s life? Multiples are acceptable.

There are so many. The day Numair got the scar on his chest, the night he met Hawk, etc. But this right here may very well be the one point that he himself could pick out as changing his life completely.

Cynn Rhys (Numair’s father) died very unexpectedly; his funeral and Numair’s coronation as the new Cynn happened on the same day, before anyone could leap to challenge Numair, or try to kill him before he took the throne. Spirits aren’t accustomed to such rapid change–particularly not losing one Cynn of a few centuries in exchange for another in the same day.

Afternoon that day found Numair, still in braces from his last assassination attempt, sitting in a wheelchair at a podium in a park full of every spirit in Escalus. The funeral reds are extremely heavy when wet. He’s tired and in pain and hadn’t expected having to make a speech. The rain seemed incredibly loud because not a soul in the city spoke while he did–they merely stared, some with disgust, some with anger, some with confusion, all with apprehension. He sat taking in every emotion from every face turned towards him and asked very quietly for his people to lend him their support. To just bear with him, if they would.

It was only afterwards when he realized that every single aspect of him was being analyzed across the nation for messages–his wearing traditional Aetherian clothes as opposed to the Western Earth suits Rhys had worn (was he more conservative than people had thought?), in contrast with his naturally curly hair even curlier in the rain (child of a foreigner, and apparently proud of that), his opting to sit in the wheelchair without even casting a spell to keep himself dry (was he that weak? Was there some other reason why he let himself be rained on?)–that this was his life now. He would be trapped cleaning up his father’s mess and trying to work with a nation that disliked him for the rest of his life.

Plus his ascension to the throne helps set into motion the events that make White Noise happen the way it does.

[A sketch of an androgynous person who is sitting with their back to the viewer, arms around one leg and chin resting upon their knee. They have dark, curly hair, greyish skin, and large scars on their back and hip. ]

3.) Name one scar your character has, and tell us where it came from. If they don’t have any, is there a reason?

Numair has rather a lot of scars, most of them sort of spoilery. One on each knee and the right hip from surgery (and then subsequent damage that made them scar very badly), one across the chest from what he will tell you was just a ‘mistake’ he made, and one large one on his back. That one’s the least spoilery I guess.

In the early '80s he was on a visit to diplomats in the Symphony Archipelago, and stayed in the homes of some of the council members as a gesture of friendship and trust by Aetheri. (The council found him extremely polite and extremely distant.) He desperately wanted, while he was there, to actually see the place, but his visit was extremely dangerous as it was because of how tenuous relations were between the Archipelago and Aetheri. He was given a driver and several guards and was allowed to see the island from the back of a car, but found that incredibly depressing a substitute. One day he asked to drive, and let the driver sit in the back. Someone planted a roadside bomb that day that flipped the car and, thanks in part to some reactionary magic on Numair’s part and the fact that he was at the wrong end of the vehicle, killed the driver but not Numair. Instead he found himself pinned under the wreckage. The car broke his spine and burned his back severely, but luckily he was found before he passed out or whoever had planted the bomb found him. He then spent the next decade having his spine healed and learning to walk again, because even magic has a hard time with the nervous system.

People have since credited that attack to being the reason why war between Aetheri and army republics in the Archipelago started, but it was going to start with or without that provocation. Funnily enough, Numair’s pretty sure no one in the Archipelago actually planned the attack.

30 Day Character Development: Day 5

5.) What’s your character’s ranking on the Kinsey Scale?

Katherine Kat

For Katherine here, it would most resemble her to be a 1 or less on the scale. She is attracted to men for a lot of reasons other than the physical look, but she does make friends with girls and is kind and caring to them as friends. She wouldnt make a move on any of them mostly because she doesnt feel a spark or such with that gender. Kat just is into boys and has been her whole life.

3

Day 2:
How do they usually dress? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear jewelry?: Usually she tries to match her shoes exactly to something else she’s wearing…she has tons of shoes for that. Her style is very laid back, she doesn’t try too hard. Her pajamas are even more basic, usually a tshirt, sweatpants, and slippers. She does not wear jewelry unless she is attending a big event.

Is there anything about their appearance they wish they could change?: Her nose

How would they look as the opposite sex?: See photo ;]

What do they smell like? Why (do they wear the scent or does it occur naturally)?: She always carries her vanilla body spray wherever she goes.

Do they have an accurate mental picture of their appearance (how they see themselves versus how the world sees them)?: For the most part. She doesn’t think she’s beautiful, but she can accept compliments when they are given.

30 Day Character Development Challenge-- Day 7

7.) Is there one event or happening your character would like to erase from their past? Why?

My family’s deaths. Needless. Stupid. Useless. Caused so much pain to so many people for no reason. Miss them every day– during labor with Milo, cried out for my mom. Because I wanted her to be there. She needed to be there. Dad needed to hold his grandson. Briley needed to be an uncle. But it won’t happen. Because I was stupid and got them hurt. Hate myself for it every day. Wish they were here. Wish it every day.

Mags volunteering, too. Tried to volunteer back for her, told Finnick I would, but it was too late. She knew what would happen. She died for me. To save me from having to go back. Will never, ever forget that. She means so much to Finnick, too. A mother to him, and to me. She took care of us. And she died for me.

First daughter we have, she’ll be Maggie. Just for Mags.

Xavier Corvid  30 day character development challenge

Day 5

Resources and Abilities

Where did they learn their abilities?

first of all, we have to ask the question. What abilities?    cause i’m not sure what abilities Xavier has.   He’s good at modeling.  which partly comes naturally from his desire to be physically appealing, and a natural connection to his own body, but also from a lot of practice and being yelled at by insane uncaring photographers.    His abilities to parent effectively are also a natural thing. He’s just a very very nurturing person, and partly from being so young is extremely in tune with his own traumatic childhood. He remembers what it feels like to be small and voiceless.   There are so many things he isn’t good at.

If they have an income, where does it come from?

Rivet has been supporting him since he moved in. Before that he was modeling and hustling to make a living. But Rivet’s been depressed and not herself lately. But now that they moved she’s feeling better and will probably be supporting them again with her Tarot readings. He’s thinking about taking up photography and getting into modeling again. But right now the kids need him at home.
