Harry Styles' advice for young fans: 'Allow yourself to be vulnerable'
Ahead of his self-titled debut album's release Friday, Styles shared the lessons he hopes fans learn from his new music.

Few young stars have such a well-documented respect for their teenage female fans as Harry Styles.

Ahead of his self-titled debut album’s release on Friday, Styles told USA TODAY the lessons he hopes his younger fans take from his album, urging them to be brave enough to make mistakes.

“To me, the only example to set that’s good is being honest,” he said. “It’s not a good example to set to not make any mistakes because I don’t think it’s realistic. I think making mistakes and learning from them is a much better example to set for people. And if I want someone to listen to the album and take away anything from it, it’s that if you’re trying to do something that you love, you should be yourself, and be honest with it, and not try and hide and allow yourself to be vulnerable.”

These vulnerable moments form the backbone of Styles’ new album, a collection of tracks he compared recording to “therapy.” Many of his new songs address failed relationships and questionable behavior, and when asked what his fans would think about the album’s more grown-up tracks, Styles refused to apologize for their content.

“A lot of the album is me trying to prove to myself that I can do something, and I obviously hope that people like it,” he said. “But be honest, and be open, and be vulnerable, is something I hope people take from it.”

In his recent cover story for Rolling Stone, Styles explained why he’s proud of his fanbase’s demographics, consisting of many listeners who followed his career from his One Direction days to his new solo success.

“Who’s to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy?” he said. “That’s not up to you to say. Music is something that’s always changing. There’s no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they’re not serious? How can you say young girls don’t get it? They’re our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going. Teenage-girl fans – they don’t lie. If they like you, they’re there. They don’t act ‘too cool.’ They like you, and they tell you. Which is sick.”

Marathon Ado About Nothing

After I mentioned I had the Tennant-Tate Much Ado the other day, people got to talking about it and there was a fair amount of interest in a MUCH ADO MARATHON.

So this Saturday, starting at 10am central time, I will be airing three productions of Much Ado About Nothing in a row on livestream:

10am - Noon: Keanu About Nothing, aka the Kenneth Branagh production
12:30 - 3:15: Doctor Who About Nothing, aka the Tennant-Tate production
3:45 - 6:00: Much Ado About Buffy, aka the Joss Whedon production

I’ll probably do a repeat sometimes in December or the new year for those who miss this one. But for now, mark your calendars for ten on Saturday! I’ll post a link Saturday morning, but it’s at the usual livestream channel, “theoutcastreturns”.

Are you participating in the 30 day challenge? Yes

remember how i scheduled an appt to see a new doctor? turns out, they don’t prescribe antidepressants

i’ve got 30 days worth of my meds still but the deadline for my current clinic’s membership is the 14th. i made that appt back on 6.23. so i need to find a doctor in under 30 days who can both refill my meds & respect my queerness & have an opening in that time frame that cooperates w/ my work schedule

especially b/c i’m out of refills now

my mom found out where my original doctor wound up – who fits the 1st two criteria – but they’re now an assistant & the clinic is 30 miles away

i’m peeved, to say the least

A little late for Day Three of 30 days of Doctor Who! “Invent a new feature of the Sonic Screwdriver”… This is the Capillary Reactive Vibration, which, once set on the correct frequency and wavelength, allows the Doctor’s hair to be superb. Which is why almost all of the Doctors have such great hair! :) I just had to do a group picture again, that’s why it took so long (that, and I’d forgotten to do it, too…) so here are 1,2,3,4,5,8,9 and 10 discussing the new feature! Enjoy ;)

The day Arthur returns…

Imagine BBC in 30 years when they are running out of ideas for new shows. Suddenly someone says “Hey maybe we should pick up that old show Merlin? Hire some new actors and just continue where it left of? Like we did with Doctor Who!” and the Merlin fandom will rise again, middle-aged women and men that will go on tumblr and dust off their old fandom-blogs.

Also I love Bradley and Colin but I don’t care if they hire new actors as long as they have the same personalities and the same relationship as our Merlin and Arthur.

30 days of Doctor Who26. Favorite special → The Day of the Doctor

I have a new destination. My journey is the same as yours, the same as anyone’s. It’s taken me so many years, so many lifetimes, but at last I know where I’m going. Where I’ve always been going. Home. The long way around.

30 days of Doctor WhoDay 07: A character that you feel the need to defend >> The Master

Once the Empire is established and there’s a new Gallifrey in the heavens, maybe then it stops. The drumming. The never-ending drumbeat. Ever since I was a child, I looked into the Vortex. That’s when it chose me. The drumming; the call to war. Can’t you hear it? Listen! It’s there now, right now. Tell me you can hear it, Doctor. Tell me.

Do you play Doctor Who: Legacy?

Well those guise just told us that a new character, Stormageddon (Dark Lord of All) will be available as of tomorrow! The character will be exclusively in the fan area of the app for the first 30 days as a reward for completing the new level, ‘Infestation’. The Doctor Who: Legacy Facebook page is also giving 12 lucky people codes to unlock Stormageddon.

We’ve heard that more allies will be added in the upcoming Fridays, so keep your eyes and thumbs out and ready.

If you haven’t played Doctor Who: Legacy yet, here are links to find it on Android and iOS.

↳ What is your favorite episode?

  • CLASSIC WHO EDITION: Castrovalva

As I stated in my “New Who” version of this day, I adore regeneration stories! They’re one of my favorite things in the series, especially with companions around! And, with this episode, you get three companions, a loony Doc, and the web of bondage. Of course, it’s not for everyone, but I find myself rewatching it when I’m down or I just want to laugh at Anthony Ainley screaming “MY WEEEEB”. So, yeah, there you have it. Castrovalva. Give it a watch, or I will find you, and I will kill you.

30 Days of Doctor Who

Day 29 (July 19): Who is your favourite Time Lord other than the Doctor? The Rani? The Master?

Okay, I could have gone with the obvious answer: The Master. The Master is one of my favourite (Gallifreyan) characters other than the Doctor. The Rani is also awesome and interesting, and is NOT a female version of the Master. Romana however isn’t mad like the Master, or unethical like the Rani. Romana also has great character development. She learned a lot from the Doctor, but in the end she had to be her own Romana. I would love to see her return in New Who.
