Why I Like Maths As A Linguist

Before the summer holidays, I had my GCSE exams and I messed up my Maths Calculator Paper so much it hurts. For a start, I had my calculator in the radians mode, which gave me the COMPLETE wrong results.

But, as I keep beating myself up about it, I thought I’d answer something which a fellow friend asked me.

“If you were predicted an A*, but feel like you did really badly in Maths, and are not taking it for A-Level, why do you claim to like it so much?”

It’s a reasonable question. And somewhat ironic, as there is this commonly held belief that those interested in language are usually good at maths.

However, that is not always the case. And yet, despite knowing how terrible I am, I still enjoy it.

In order to understand why, let’s take a look,firstly, at a very basic mathematical equation:

3+4=x

Now, everyone knows that ‘x’ is 7. Or at least, everyone should know. That’s about as basic as you can get.

What we seldom ask ourselves though is why and how we know this. Well, we know this because ‘3′ and ‘4′ are separate numbers. They have different properties. We also know that a ‘+’ means we should add them; that is an operation. When we have properties and operations, there must be a result. In much the same way, we can make this into a sentence.

Three dogs and four cats equals ______.

By having the number ‘three’ there, which is the adjective and the noun ‘dogs’, as with the ‘four cats’, and furthermore the ‘equals’ as the verb, we know that there must be a final result, so we need to get rid of the blank space, or ‘x’, and that gives us a perfect result.

Let’s take a look at a more difficult mathematical equation:

3x+4y=12
2x+3y=4

In this instance, we have 2 equal operations- an ‘addition’ symbol- and four digits with different properties in two different sentences. Due to these different properties, they have different results- however, the operation stays the same. And this can be put into the context of language too. As the operation tells us what we should do with the equations, we can treat it, in a sentence form, as a verb, as the verb tells us what is going on. So, in any two sentences, if the ‘properties’, i.e. the nouns, are different, but the ‘operation’ is the same, i.e. the verb, then we end up with the same concept but a different result. Proof of this can be found in:

I walked to the shop.

He walked to the car.

So, in both of the above sentences, a ‘person’ is walking. This is not particularly important, as that’s just a concept. What is important is the properties- the nouns- which determine what is actually the result. If I walk to the shop, that is the same concept as walking to the car, but it ends up with a different result. And this can be broken down.

I walked to the shop.

He walked to the car.

->I [who is not ‘he’] walked to the shop, but NOT the car.

-> He [who is not ‘I’] walked to the car, but NOT the shop.

Walking to the shop gets me into the shop.

Walking to the car gets him into the car.

Walking to the shop= Enter Shop

Walking to the car= Enter Car.

This appears somewhat like a child’s attempt at computer programming, but it gets the point across. And if we go back to the mathematical side of this;

3x+4y=12
2x+3y=4

then we can break this down. We want the same result; in the sentences, it was ‘walking to x’. In this, we want a single result of what happens.

So we need to manipulate the equations, firstly making one property equal to the other.

3x+4y=12           (*2)
2x+3y=4             (*3)

6x+8y=24
6x+9y=12

So now that we have our equal property, we can treat this as the same person, and forget about that part of it, as it is unimportant.

-y=12

By now knowing that negative of y is equal to 12, we can use this ‘person’ to define what his ‘property’ is.

y=-12

So, we now bring this back in to the equation.

3x+4y=12
2x+3y=4

3x+4(-12)=12
2x+3(-12)=4

This property remains equal the whole time, but the effect of the property has changed.

3x+-48=12
2x+-36=4

As with most languages’ grammar, we don’t like contradicting events, so;

3x-48=12
2x-36=4

As with language, we need to know what this conveys a meaning of, so we need to understand the end result from the other way;

3x=(12+48)=60
2x=(36+4)=40

3x=60
2x=40

x=60/3 AND x=40/2 (as both results of the ‘person’- i.e. the primary ‘property’ must now be equal.

Thus, x=20.

If we then put these ‘properties’ back into the equation; x=20 and y=-12, then we get:

3(20)+4(-12)=12
2(20)+3(-12)=4

60-48=12 (CORRECT)
40-36=4 (CORRECT)

And so, in a similar way to language, we have used an operation and properties to give us an end result, which is valid- a true positive, if you will.

This is very basic maths, but it gives a basic insight into how we can perceive maths like language, in that every part is a block, and to build a valid result, we need to build the blocks in the right way.

Goodbye.

Happy monthsary pretty. Exam kahapon, busy-busyhan kaya ngayon lang nakapag post. Hehe. Sabay pa tayong sumagot ng “magf-four years!” Haha gusto ko yun babe.

Grabe, 3 years & 11 months. Espesyal kasi ‘to. Hehe, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH baby. Maraming salamat. Happy monthsary! :*

As lágrimas secaram, o coração endureceu. Hoje eu me sinto bem. A ferida finalmente virou cicatriz.
