‘Sesame Street’ is bringing Julia, an autistic muppet , to the show

  • Sesame Street has a new muppet on the block.
  • On Sunday’s 60 Minutes, Julia, an autistic muppet, was introduced as the newest addition to the decades-old children’s television show’s cast.
  • After first appearing as Elmo and Abby’s playmate in a 2015 digital storybook for autistic children, Julia will be featured as a regular character starting in April 2017, Vulture reported.
  • The fact that Julia is a girl seems significant, as some researchers believe autistic girls are under-diagnosed. Read more (3/20/17 12 PM)

  • Colin Kaepernick isn’t done taking a stand for what he believes is right.
  • After the White House unveiled a budget proposal calling for funding cuts that could hurt Meals on Wheels, the free-agent quarterback donated $50,000 to the cause.

Zelda fans have found a huge new timeline clue in ‘Breath of the Wild’

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is home to several familiar locations that you’ll no doubt remember from previous Zelda games.
  • While there’s no official confirmation that the areas are exactly the same place for sure, the similarities are uncanny. That’s particularly true for Lon Lon Ranch, a popular spot in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
  • Breath of the Wild includes ruins that look just like Lon Lon Ranch.
  • This seems to suggest that Breath of the Wild takes places in the same world as Ocarina of Time, just much much later on. Read more (3/16/17 12:07 PM)

Kevin: We’ve only gotten the small timers out.

Jason: I know, we gotta get that fucking Paul out.

Kevin: He’s gone fucking mad. He’s like fucking Napoleon. We should start calling him Napoleon. You know who Napoleon is, right? Napoleon was the French dictator, like he was the head of the military, but he had a small man’s complex. Ya ever hear them call it a Napoleon complex? He put his hand here *poses like Napoleon* and posed all the time like this. And then this little prick would give orders to everybody. And then he didn’t listen to one order when he should’ve and well, wadaloo, ya know what I mean? He (Paul) is literally out of his mind–his ears, his eyes are spinning like fucking one arm bandits, ya know? And he’s like telling everyone what’s going on and what to do. He’s telling so many people so many different things, I wonder how even keeps it straight or knows what the fuck he’s doing??

While I live for Kevin clocking Paul, does anyone know if he went and told Paul that Jason wants him out or not? I would love it if he didn’t, but I also know Kevin is playing both sides so…..

‘Power Rangers’ star RJ Cyler talks about playing an autistic character

  • Power Rangers made headlines this week with news that Becky G’s Yellow Ranger is gay (or possibly bisexual).
  • But the representation doesn’t stop there. The reboot includes an autistic character in the Blue Ranger Billy, played by RJ Cyler.
  • In an interview with Mic, Cyler said he knew his character would be on the spectrum when he signed onto the film.
  • “I got excited,” he explained, when asked how he reacted to the news. “It was good to be able to see life through a different viewpoint, because we see life through our eyes and so we feel like we have everything understood, but that’s just through our imagination. Being able to just bring that type of aspect to Billy, man, it was just exciting, and it was such an honor to be able to represent such an amazing group of people.” Read more (3/21/17 3:12 PM)

“Fuck you terrorist” spray painted on Iranian refugee’s home. Now he plans to leave the US

  • Hasel Afshar, 33, isn’t Muslim. He’s Baha'i, but that didn’t matter to the people that vandalized his home this week.
  • After taking a three-day vacation, Afshar — an Iranian refugee — returned to his home in Troutdale, Oregon, to find it vandalized with racist epithets and bullets in the shape of a cross. “Terrorist,” “Muslim” and “Get out of America” were spray painted in red all over the walls in his home.  A threatening letter also accompanied the graffiti.
  • “If I see you here next month, I will shoot you and burn your house,” the note read, according to Outlook, a local newspaper in Oregon.
  • In 2010, Afshar fled religious persecution in Iran. But after living in the U.S. for about seven years, he’s once again enduring religious and racial persecution. Read more. (3/31/17, 12:01 PM)

There’s no Uber at SXSW and the Silicon Valley elite are freaking out

  • Wealthy venture capitalists and tech CEOs at Austin’s annual South by Southwest conference gazed sullenly into their phones, wet and angry, nowhere to go but Twitter to air their grievances.
  • It was Saturday, and they’d just discovered they couldn’t hail a private car with Uber or Lyft. They were stranded — in a city with working public transportation.
  • The quick backstory: Uber and Lyft left Austin in May after the city’s citizens voted that the ride-sharing companies would have to fingerprint their drivers as part of a more rigorous background-check process.
  • Of course, there was convenient transportation in Austin over the weekend. A quick Google search reveals the city’s public transportation options faster than you can say “gig economy” — there’s even a landing page dedicated to it on the SXSW website. Read more (3/13/17 12:55 PM)

Muslim Marine Tayyib Rashid is offering to stand guard for Jewish cemeteries, synagogues in Chicago

  • After a wave of anti-semitic violence, particularly the vandalism of two Jewish cemeteries in Philadelphia and St. Louis, Tayyib Rashid knew it was time to step up.
  • Rashid, a veteran, who calls himself as the “Muslim Marine,” sent out a tweet on Monday offering to stand guard for any Jewish synagogue, cemetery or organization.
  • Rashid knew he had to do more to help out his Jewish neighbors and that’s why he fired off his now-viral tweet.
  • “As I watch this horrible thing unfold here, I felt terrible about what happened in St. Louis and this heinous event in Philadelphia,” Rashid, 40, said in a phone interview. “I was moved to tears. This is absolutely not right.” Read more (3/1/17 12:53 PM)

Protest groups to unite as “The Majority” for massive actions across the country on May 1

  • Activist groups are uniting as a broader coalition they’ve dubbed “The Majority,” an idea inspired by the Movement for Black Lives — organizers first shared with Mic on Thursday.
  • More than 50 partners representing black, Latino, the indigenous, LGBTQ, refugees, immigrants, laborers and the poor will collaborate from April 4 through May 1, International Worker’s Day, when they’ll launch massive protests across the country.

Scott Pruitt, head of EPA, isn’t sure if carbon dioxide drives climate change

  • On Thursday’s installment of Squawk Box on CNBC, EPA head Scott Pruitt said he wasn’t convinced carbon dioxide emissions comprise a “primary contributor” to climate change.
  • “I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do and there’s tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact, so no, I would not agree that it’s a primary contributor to the global warming that we see,” Pruitt said.
  • Here are the facts: NASA, one of the fact-focused scientific institutions driving the aforementioned research and analysis, calls the release of carbon dioxide through human activities like deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels — on top of natural carbon dioxide emissions — “the most important long-lived ‘forcing’ of climate change.” Read more (3/9/17 12:05 PM)
