2x02 bad code

It’s Root “I know” that gets me every time. I love she knows that she has awkward timing and cheesy lines.

I love that she’s started when she was twelve years old, insulting Hanna’s favorite game to get Hanna’s attention. And Hanna’s face when Sam Groves insulted Oregon Trail

12 year old Sam Groves: So. Awkward.

She’s still the same, she’s stopped using insults to get people she likes to notice her, but the awkward timing remained. And, as an adult Root’s more confident now but boy, the lines are still cheesy.

Enter Shaw, who it turned out liked Root’s cheesy lines and awkward timing but it didn’t start out that way because Root’s so lame and yet, it was working. This probably was what annoyed Shaw the most.

Then she was gone nine months and Shaw realized she missed the whole ridiculous package that is Root.

And yet, we still haven’t upgraded human beings. The human race has stalled out, Harold. And from what I’ve seen, most of it is rotten to the core.

Root Cause (1x13)  / Bad Code (2x02)

So @its-lily-briscoe and I were discussing .EXE, and we found a couple of cool facts, observations and callbacks!

1. The AU scenes were tinged green instead of the usual blue filter we get when we have flashbacks and all the AU scenarios had a 96.8% chance of happening.

2. Root’s bad code statements:

“One day, I realized all the dumb, selfish things people do… it’s not our fault. No one designed us. We’re just an accident, Harold. We’re just bad code.” – Root (The Contingency, 2x01)

“They’ll never truly appreciate all that Samaritan’s given them. They’re not capable. They’re just bad code.” – Root (.EXE, 5x12)

3. The man who sold the world:

Harold Finch: You don’t know anything about me.

Root: Oh, but I do, Harold. You’re the man who sold the world. Just to the wrong people.

– (Bad Code, 2x02)

“Who am I? I’m just like you, Mr. Barnett. A man who sold the world. Only I charged them $1.” – Harold Finch (.EXE, 5x12)

4. Harold smiling at TM when it says that maybe it knows him better than he knows himself vs Harold getting out his hammer when TM inquired about his Dad in the flashbacks during BSOD.

5. AI as the next step in the evolutionary chain:

“Human beings have come as far as we’re gonna go. I want to see what happens next.” – Root (The Contingency, 2x01)

“They [SAM and TM] may be at odds, but they’re the only two gods of their kind. And the next step on the evolutionary ladder.” – John Greer (.EXE, 5x12)

6. Team Machine’s mission statement:

“Since we started this, things have changed. We’ve changed. But the mission, our purpose, has always been constant: to save lives.” – Harold Finch (Death Benefit, 3x20)

“My Machine… her purpose has been constant: to protect and save humanity. It’s what she’s doing now.” – Harold Finch (.EXE, 5x12)
