I don’t have a scanner so some of these could be better, but here’s a photoshoot of kimono made from Okinawan textiles as seen in “Utsukushii Kimono” magazine, Summer 2012.
This special, large spread (I left out a few non kimono pages) was done in honor of the 40th anniversary of Okinawa returning to Japan from US control after WWII.
Title: “The Beautiful Okinawan Dyes and Weaves That Yanagi Soetsu Found”
(Yanagi Soetsu was a famous philosopher and leader of Mingei, “arts of the people” movement, and brought national attention to Okinawan fabrics in the 30s and 40s.)
The most famous two are the subtle Oshima tsumugi and bright and colorful bingata.
