The husband and I decided to become members of MDRA (Minnesota Distance Runners Association) this year. Because we signed up on cyber Monday, we received a free t-shirt and a 2012 race guide, that lists over 300 races here in Minnesota. The plan is to sit down and really start plotting out which races I want to do this year. I’m thinking I might want to do 1 race each month, but that’s going to get expensive fast. The nice thing about being an MDRA member is we get a discount at local running stores, free or $5 entries into MDRA sponsored races and several free running groups that we can join. Our membership also helps support Metrodome (the Vikings stadium) running during the winter. MDRA sponsors indoor running at the Dome from November-March two evenings a week for only $2. I didn’t utilize the Dome last year, but I’m toying with the idea of a spring marathon and there’s no way I’m going to do all my long runs on the dreadmill, so the Dome will be a nice option.
This is what I think my race calendar for 2012 will look like:
January- Polar Dash 10K
February- Valentine’s Day TC 5K
March- Get Lucky 21K (13.1)
April- Get in Gear 10K
May- Med City Marathon 26.2 or MDRA Mississippi 10 Miler
June- Minneapolis Marathon 13.1
July- TC Red, White & Boom 13.1
August- Ragnar Relay 200 miles or Minneapolis Duathlon 5K/18 miles/5K
September- Women Run the Cities 10 mile or Athleta Iron Girl Duathlon 2/22/2
October- Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon 26.2 or 10 mile and Monster Dash 13.1
November- Lifetime Turkey Day 5K
December- Reindeer Run 5K
There has been talk amongst myself and two of my girlfriends about trying to run the ING NYC marathon together next year. I think this would be an amazing experience, especially since the 3 of us haven’t been in the same place at the same time in over 15 years. Through the power of facebook, we have been training partners, mentors, and support systems for each other in the last two years as our running careers have blossomed. I really thought I would never do another marathon, but talk of NYC has made me want to try again. As you can see from my proposed schedule, it may not be the only one I will attempt next year.
What does your calendar look like for 2012? Have you signed up for your first race? Have you signed up for a new distance? How are you going to train during the winter?
