I’m not saying these are the same photo, but it’s good to keep in mind that Yana has had the idea of the “burnt family photo” since 2008 :D

Samia Yusuf Omar was a Somalian sprinter who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Following the Games, Omar could not compete due to threats from the militant group al-Shabaab. She ended up in a displacement camp and had to cross the border into Ethiopia in order to train. In April of 2012, Omar boarded a boat bound for Italy, where she hoped to start a new life and train with a European coach. Tragically, Omar and many others on the boat drowned in the process. She was 21 years old.

Usain Bolt to lose Olympic gold after teammate caught doping

Usain Bolt made history as the first sprinter to sweep three gold medals at three Olympic Games. Now he’s losing a piece of his historic hardware.

Bolt will forfeit an Olympic gold won at the 2008 Beijing Games because his Jamaican teammate was caught doping.

Nesta Carter was disqualified from the 4x100 relay that won gold in Beijing after a reanalysis of his sample found the banned substance methylhexaneamine, the IOC announced Wednesday.

Sandra Izbașa (b. 1990) is a Romanian gymnast famous for her many international achievements. She is a double Olympic champion, for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, as well as a multiple European and World champion.

She has won a total of nine gold medals, five silver and five bronze in these international events. In addition to her individual victories, she helped the Romanian national team win the top prize on several occasions.

I know.

It is a sad comment on what the Olympics have become, cities build all this infrastructure that is left to rot after the main event is over. There is a series of images by David Gray called Ghosts of Olympics Past that includes some of the best known venues from the 2008 Olympics (among others). Still, I consider the design one of the highlights of stadium design in recent years.

This Day in Disney History

August 29, 2008:  Michael Phelps returns from Beijing and visits Walt Disney World to be honored in a special parade for his achievements at the 2008 Olympic Games.

He was joined by Mickey and all his friends at the Magic Kingdom along the parade route and this wasn’t even Phelps’ first time receiving such an honor!  He was also seen after the 2004 games celebrating!


Leo Messi and Javier Mascherano: 10 years together

The two players coincided on the field for the first time during an international friendly in Switzerland in 2005 Since then, the duo have been key to the great success of both FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team.Until November 2005 that they played together, doing so with the Argentina national team in Switzerland. “[Then head coach, José] Pékerman called me to join the group, despite being injured, and Leo was getting his first experience on the national team. It was a friendly against England,” says Mascherano in the latest issue of Barça Magazine.

Ten years after coming face to face in Switzerland, Messi and Mascherano have done a lot of winning together. They won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, and reached the finals in the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 Copa America. Messi is the national team captain and Mascherano is his right-hand man. They’ve been together at Barça since the 2010/11 season and have won 13 titles.
