For Black History Month: black principals in “Phantom of the Opera”
Phantom: Robert Guillaume, Los Angeles (1990-91)
Phantom: Norm Lewis, Broadway (2014-15)
Carlotta: Patricia Phillips, Toronto & Broadway (1993, 2003-04, 2006, 2008-09)
Carlotta: Angela M. Caesar, Restaged UK Tour (2012-13)
Carlotta: Danielle White, Las Vegas (principal 2008, 2006-12)
Christine: Lana English, Johannesburg and Pretoria (2004)
Raoul: Jordan Donica, Broadway (2016-17)
Piangi: Thabiso Masemene, World Tour (2011-16)
Piangi: John Whitney, US Tour (2001, 2004-10)
Piangi: Marcus Desando, World Tour (2004-05)
Phantom: Derrick Davis, Restaged US Tour (2016-17)
Phantom: Nicholas Nkuna, Johannesburg and Cape Town (2011-12)
(some comments: for many South Africans the term “coloured” is preferred if there’s different heritage involved, and Lana English would be considered coloured. But in the US and UK that is considered slur and usually avoided online. Just be aware of the distinction. Read more about that here.
Also, there’s been so many wonderful understudies that I did not get to list here, especially for the role of Carlotta, but also for Piangi, Meg Giry and Madame Giry. Only understudy on the list is Nicholas Nkuna, as he played the Phantom. The others are not forgotten, only left out because of Tumblr’s photo limit)
Submission: Here is Ramin Karimloo as Raoul in the Final Lair.
I’m sure it’s Katie Knight-Adam as Christine and John Owen Jones as the Phantom. I could be wrong? It’s 2003 London production of Phantom of the Opera cast.
My comment: The first photo is actually Oliver Thornton, with Rachel Barrell and JOJ. It’s been circulating the web as Ramin Karimloo for some 10 years now, so I don’t blame the confusion on your part. But Ramin Karimloo never played opposite Rachel Barrell, which effectively rules him out :)
The second one, however, is indeed JOJ, KKA and Ramin K, from the 2003-04 stage footage filmed for the 2004 movie.
Anyone who followes the Bundesliga will know that the team closest to Kloppo’s heart - FSV Mainz 05 find themselves in a relegation battle, after a terrible run of results.
Things have got so serious that 2 of their Ultras fans travelled to Liverpool last week to see Kloppo.
They came to get a banner from him. This banner hung at their old stadium - Stadion am Bruchweg in 2003/04, the season they finally made it to the Bundesliga for the first time in their 99 year history. They gave it to Kloppo when he left in 2008 after 18 years at the club. So now it’s going back on loan with the Mainz fans. 🇩🇪
