2.04: empty hands

I just wanna talk for a minute about how fucking fun and sexy filipino arts are to watch. I mean dayum. And yes, in case any of you are wondering why this might look vaguely familiar; this was the style of fighting that was loosely used in the movie “Taken."

Howard Hawks took credit for signing Norma Shearer for Empty Hands (1924) despite objections from studio boss Jesse Lasky who found her unattractive.  After seeing the finished product Jesse wanted her to sign a long term contract but she’d already moved on to MGM where she stayed through the 30s.  Howard married Norma’s sister Athole in 1928, divorcing her in 1940.

Hell Yea! Girls can do it too. \m/

I come to you with only Karate, empty hands, I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor, should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong; then here are my weapons, Karate, my empty hands.
—  Ed Parker
But because… the time we spend on earth is indeed short, I shall be forgiven for being concerned with one thing only, and since there is not enough time to bring down and capture this one thing, but only to hunt it, to pursue it with all one’s passion, my empty hands will not be smiled at or not more so than everyone else’s.
All the empty hands of all of us.
—  Ingeborg Bachmann, from “A Wildermuth” tr. Michael Bullock
