2 per show

Just queer ship things

- queer until proven not queer and even then can be queer

- protect the lesbians

- watching our favorite characters die

- getting canceled

- only 1 or 2 gays per show

- about 30 seconds of screen time per episode

- we fight for our ships cause no one else will

- taking care of each other

- the rest of the fandom hating us for being queer

okay but think how great a downworlders spin-off would be, we never get to see how downworlders really react to stuff, only the aftermath of it and i just want this so badly i’m aching

You’ve brought up this issue before, this issue of not feeling like you’re in control. Do you remember? When we spoke about your father.

Translation: Tatsuki MACHIDA interview from PIW 2017 programme

Thank you for the scans @chestnutskating!

“Ice shows are a world of competition”

2 years and a half since the sudden retirement announcement, Machida Tatsuki, who has since then kept silent, accepted to be interviewed for the first time by Prince Ice World to talk extensively about his current life as a show skater, about creating, and about his future plans.

10 years with Prince Ice World

ー You retired competitive skating in December 2014 and it’s been 2 years and a half you have become a graduate student and a professional skater. Since then, it’s the first time you accept to be interviewed. First, can we ask you about the new creation you will reveal at Prince Ice World 2017?

It’s before the real show so I can’t tell you everything about it yet, but this time’s work is again based on a new concept, and furthermore, it relies on a new method of creation. I think it’s packed of unprecedented challenges. Actually, this time’s program is a program I want to show especially to the younger men skaters.

I guess this is the part where I scream? Anyway, I wrote a guide to the Disney Halloween Recruiters last year, but I’m writing a new one along with this journal post because there have been quite a few changes from last year’s show format. I’ll also run down the basics again for anyone who missed it!

Also, sorry for the varying photo quality. My phone is really fickle about lighting and a lot of photos taken later in the day look more washed out because of the sun. My phone also thinks “zoom” is a synonym for “mosaic”.

SMblr of the Week #2: thankyoufive

Name: Tiffany Lyn
Age: 23
Current position: Freelance SM; currently stage manager for The Miracle Worker at The Athens Theatre in Deland, FL
Education: B.A. Theatre Studies degree from the University of Central Florida
Location: Orlando

What is the strangest thing you have ever had to do for a show?
Hmmm… I actually can’t think of anything too terribly strange that I had to *do*, but I’ve received some pretty great texts that, out of context, would be absolutely ridiculous to most people. Most recently: “The baby is in a box in the front row”.

Favorite type of Post-it Note, and why?
I’m a fan of the little tibby-tabbys for marking scenes/acts/musical numbers/combat sections/etc. I also like the 4x6 lined pads for note taking purposes. Or my special edition Hello Kitty sticky note sets. They’re pretty fab.

Do you have any personal show traditions or tech week stress relievers?
I have a couple. Firstly, there is a small piece of wood that comes with me everywhere — it is my knock-on wood and a total good luck charm. My hedgehog always comes with to Q2Q to keep me company in stage-management-land. I eat the same foods during the day at Q2Q (munchkins, iced coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts, spaghetti made by my boyfriend, lunchables, chocolate covered espresso beans and a fruit salad from Publix). As far as stress relievers go, I’m all for treating yoself during tech. Cute dresses, yummy food, a slightly more expensive drink at the end of the night — stuff like that.

You work at a theatre with a young target audience. How does this affect your work, and how have you learned to adapt?
When working on a mainstage production, it doesn’t really affect my work at all; our casts are made up of adults (for the most part — there may be 2 shows per season that have children in them) and they’re all working professionals, so that’s easy. When working on youth academy shows, however, there are HUGE groups of middle and high schoolers (and occasionally elementary school — the Aladdin you see in that production still was in the 4th grade during that show). The big thing you have to realize is that in these situations, the rehearsal process really becomes a space for learning, teaching, and fostering these students’ love of theater. You need to come in prepared so that they can have a blast and at the same time learn what it means to work in the theater — particularly during tech week. For 2 of the youth academy shows, we have a very truncated tech schedule; that tech time *must* be about the students. You can’t spend 15 minutes adjusting a cue with the kids in one position. You’ve got to get those kids up and moving and rehearsing and putting a show together. Personally, I love it. I would do a youth academy show over a mainstage any day — the highs and lows are much more extreme with the kids, but it’s so much fun to see them succeed and grow.

Do you have any advice for young technicians and stage managers?
Ask questions. Stay hydrated. Explore. Eat good food. Find the type of theatre that excites you and GO FOR IT. Try different ways of doing things. Realize that there will always be someone better than you and don’t take it personally. Do the best that you can until you learn more — then be better. Take care of yourself (no one likes a grumpy stage manager, and you can’t take care of other people if you’re falling apart). Don’t play the martyr card — you chose a thankless job, so don’t complain when no one thanks you profusely or when you have to stay at the theater 3 hours after everyone else has left. Be good to your team, to your cast, and to your shows and they will be good to you.
