“And then he called me a stupid cactus! Would you believe that?” “…” “I know right?! Just because I’m a succulent doesn’t mean I’m some stupid cactus!”
Ochara likes to associate himself with roses because of having thorns and feeling important and gets angry really fast when someone points out the truth. Then again pretty much everything makes him angry, he’s worse than an angsty teenager and just complains about everything ever. Others like to make fun of him because of how easy is to make him angry :>
Ewoqi is mute, so he can’t exactly talk back, but for some reason still tolerates Ochara and enjoys his very undemanding company.
It says “Bender is gay.” with alien alphabet. The thing is: wouldn’t it be cool if people had t-shirts of this? Because only other fans could understand what the hell it says. Also they would notice you’re a fan too. Also some of them could want to fight you.
one of the most endearing things about gintama is the fact nearly everyone calls gintoki by his first name. like, who actually calls him “sakata”? (tosshi the otaku? “sakata-shi!”) everyone else calls him “gintoki” or some version of “gin”. the shinsengumi call him “yorozuya” or “danna” (”boss”), but that’s a nickname that’s more personal than “sakata”. i mean, everyone else pretty much refer to each other by their surnames–except for when it comes to gintoki. even within the joui 4, i’ve always found it interesting that they call each other “takasugi”, “sakamoto”, and “zura” (okay, this one’s a nickname), but gintoki is just…”gintoki” (or “kintoki”, if you’re sakamoto).
everyone calls him by his first name right from the start too. nobody has started with “sakata” and changed to “gintoki”. and i dunno why, but it’s…really endearing to me? like, formality and etiquette are a big part of japanese culture, hence all of the different ways of refering to yourself and others (e.g. honorifics: -san, -chan, -sama, etc.), and how people start off on last-name-basis first before first-name-basis, all of which express different levels of politeness and indicate different levels of intimacy. but for gintoki, everyone he helps/meets basically skip that first step; they go straight to his first name. and i guess this implies that they are comfortable enough/consider him a friend even after one encounter.
sorachi is a genius, did you know? he’s not just a master of story-telling, but also a master of people. i mean he knows how people use language to express their unspoken feelings. our protagonist actually isn’t all that flashy and he doesn’t exactly exude that “bright” energy that make people fall in line right behind him and fight for whatever noble cause he tells them too. so we don’t get adoring crowds telling him how much they love him or look up to him or whatever on a daily basis. instead what we get is “gintoki” (otose), “gin-san” (shinpachi), “gin-chan” (kagura), “gin-no-ji” (gengai). in this manga where most characters are on last-name-basis with each other, we have our protagonist, “gintoki”. in this subtle way, we can tell just how much he’s loved. we can see all of his friends and family. people who consider him important to them. hell, you can even see it in the fandom. does anyone actually call gintoki, “sakata”?? and so i guess that’s why i just find this whole thing so endearing. they don’t have to voice how much he means to them; you can hear it nonetheless.
or maybe he just introduces himself as “yorozuya gin-chan” so people don’t even know what his last name is and have no choice but to refer to him by his first name…
Yes to book recs!! Please!! LGBT YA is a big interest of mine!
YAY okay so my goodreads read list is here so like, that’s got a bunch of stuff (I’ve rated everything there and written some reviews, nearly everything I’ve read since starting using goodreads is LGBT YA) but I figure I will give you five specific recs. A lot of these deal with Issues so ask if you need me to try and do content warnings?
Radio Silence by Alice Oseman - Oh My God this book is so incredible? It’s not a romance story, but it’s got a bi girl lead and is an amazing story about fandom, and shared creation and the struggle of growing up. The characters are wonderful, I loved this so much. I was in a bookstore yesterday and had to resist buying multiple copies just to give people who I think should read it.
Not Your Sidekick by CB Lee - This book is so FUN and INTERESTING and such great characters. This is a Superhero book set in the future, our lead (who is bi and Asian American) is the child of two Superheroes who just wants to be super herself… and then starts an internship with their nemesis. This has a great mix of heart and action-adventure, and I love the ensemble (especially Bells, one of her two BFFs who is a black trans guy and has a huge crush on their other BFF <3).
You Know Me Well by Nina Lacour and David Levithan - I LOVE FRIENDSHIP STORIES I mean, there is also romance and stuff, but at it’s heart this is a story about two young queer people who meet and have a really intense friendship from the off, set over pride week in San Francisco. It’s a friend-love story.
My Year Zero by Rachel Gold - This is such a lovely book, about finding yourself, and isolation, and how easy it is to fall for something that seems incredible on the surface but isn’t inside. Jewish lesbian MC, and it’s about a group writing a collaborative Sci Fi story. The group includes multiple bi people, and nerdery and finding the lines between the story and their lives a complex thing
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire - trying to decide one more was tough and then made me realise I hadn’t put this book on my account there. This has an ace lead which is so cool to see. It’s a story about a boarding school for kids who have been kicked out of their portal fantasy - so like, the kids who went to places like Narnia, Neverland, Wonderland, but now can’t get back and are supposed to go back to their lives, this is where they end up. It’s actually a novella, so a quick read, and one of the secondary characters is trans and he is <3 so another reason to read!
I could rec SO MUCH MORE but that’s why I linked to my Good Reads up top (like omg I just read “Not Otherwise Specified" last night and black bi girl recovering from eating disorder who is a passionate performer it is SO GOOD shh no *you* sneaked another rec in) but trying not to overload.

‘You are what you eat’ is what they say and Bonnie has been eating her little snake friends for over a century. She’s not as scary as she looks, though. Actually, she’s pretty harmless (if you’re not a snake, that is).
