Hello :) I'm a Christian but absolutely respectful of and intrigued by Islam :) what is the significance of ramadan? Like why do people celebrate it? This isn't meant to be offence I'm just intrigued!

Hi :D

How Did Ramadan Begin?

Ramadan is the holy month of the Islamic lunar calendar. In this month the prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him), received his first revelation from God - which is apart of the holy book of Islam, the Quran.

“In the month of Ramadan the Qur'an was revealed.” (Chapter Baqarah, 2:185)

This revelation was - “Read”. This is a remarkable command from God to prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) because the prophet could not read.

The story involves the Angel Gabriel. If you would like to read it, here is a good summary of the events - The Message

Why is Ramadan so Special?

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Muslims refrain from food, drink, bad deeds and other actions to purify themselves for their Lord as well as relate to people without food.Fasting provides humility for the Muslims. The idea is that, if we can refrain from food and drink for God, we can certainly refrain from sinful actions as well.

So, the first and main reason Ramadan is so special is because

1. It is an excellent means of developing the spiritual connection with our Lord

During this month we believe the gates of heaven are open, and the devils are chained in hell so that we cannot be tempted by their misguidance. We believe that while fasting, we have numerous opportunities to gain good deeds as well as to get rid of the bad ones. Our good deeds are multiples in this month as a mercy from our Lord. There are special prayers that are utilized during the night so we may exalt our Lord. For a whole month, we are given huge opportunities to easily cleanse ourselves and renew our connection with our Lord. It is difficult for me to convey this feeling, but in my heart I feel Ramadan. As do many Muslims. It makes us feel connected, motivated, energized, and excited.

So the most important benefit of ramadan that gives Muslims so much excitement is that we hope to become more pious.

O you who believe! fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard (against evil). (Chapter Baqarah, 2:183)

During this month we believe we have the opportunity to rid ourselves of our past sins -

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever observes fasts during the month of     Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.“

(Authentic Narration by Bukhari)

2. In this month, we can develop humility

Understanding the struggles of people around the world who do not go to bed with a full tummy is a bit easier when you’re fasting all day. During this month we are encouraged to give charity to those in need and remind ourselves of the blessing we have. It reminds us that those who regularly do not have much to eat should be in our prayers and we should strive to give charity to them constantly.

3. We are reminded of our community

Ramadan is really a time for family, friends, and all of our Muslim family. We see each other more than usual during this month. We eat with family friends often and usually cook the best meals during this time. Sweets are usual for every night, and laughter is common. It’s so much fun to be around those who are God conscious during this month. On the first night before Ramadan we wish everyone a happy Ramadan. It is truly a moment that reminds us how blessed we are to have another Ramadan, another huge opportunity to better ourselves for the sake of our Lord.

4. We PARTYYYY after Ramadan

During Ramadan, we focus on reading the Quran, doing good deeds, praying more, watching our tongues - we try to give up TV, and movies - we spend more time with family and try to sleep less so we can worship more.

Then, the day after Ramadan, for 3 days, we PARTTYYYYYY. With lots of sweets! We celebrate our fasting and the good deeds we received and we aim to carry on our new found habits!

The holiday after Ramadan is called Eid al-Fitr. We wear our best clothing, go to the Eid prayer, give gifts, decorate our homes, and eat. Eat eat eat :D

5. Fasting is amazing for your physical health, not just spiritual

I will not go into much details with this because it’s not the main point of Ramadan, but one of the benefits to us is the cleansing of our body. If done right (not just eating a bunch of soda and fried foods during this month) you can really aid your body.

Fasting has been shown to:

  • Promotes anti aging hormones (promoting longevity)
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Speed up the metabolism
  • Boosts brain function (by promoting the production of a protein (BDNF) that promotes neural health)
  • Improve heart health
  • Prevent cancer

I hope this helps you understand a bit more about Ramadan. The feeling it brings is unlike no other. If you ever have any more questions about Ramadan, or anything about Islam, you’re always welcome to ask me.

It’s really important that we can understand each other’s religions better so we can facilitate each other’s worship of God.

Have a great day!

Assalam Alaykum Dear Sisters,
Alhumdulillah! Allahs mercy in the form of Ramadan is approaching us🕌.
But Before that ☝ An important REMINDER!!

Allah swt is especially merciful with us females. If you missed your Fasts due to periods, pregnancy, sickness , travelling 🎒etc., it is obligatory for us to complete the missed fasts before Ramadan starts
Allah swt mentiones in the Qur’an, *“…the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days” [Al-Baqarah 2:185]*

While a Hadith says that, *Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: That (i.e., menstruation) would happen to us and we would be told to make up the fasts, but we were not told to make up the prayers. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (321) and Muslim (335)*

So Hurry up, time is running out ⏳, we should complete our fasts ASAP.

Jazak Allahu Khairan

The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'aan was revealed, as a guidance for mankind, clear signs of His guidance, and the criterion between right and wrong. And whoever amongst you witness the new moon, then let him fast an equal number of other days. Allah desires for you ease and He desires not hardship for you; and He desires that you complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that which He has guided you; and perchance you shall be grateful.

-Al Qur'aan (2:185)

How should we receive Ramadan? - Part 2

5. Receiving Ramadan by making the best use of time

Time is very precious because every minute that passes can never return. Ramadan is also a means of success or failure, salvation or destruction…

Amongst the obligatory and recommended acts of worship in Ramadan are:

First: Fasting during the daytime:

Allah (swt) says:

So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days.} [Holy Qur'an 2: 185]

Moreover, the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

“Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking the reward of Allah, his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Second: Performing voluntary night prayers (the Taraweh prayer):

It was narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

“Whoever stands (in voluntary prayer at night in) Ramadan out of faith and seeking the reward of Allah, his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Third: Reciting the Quran:

Ramadan is the month of the Noble Quran. Allah (swt) says:

{The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.} [Holy Qur'an 2: 185]

The angel Jibreel (Gabriel) (as) would study the Qur'an with the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam in the month of Ramadan.

Fourth: Giving Iftaar (the fast-breaking meal) to fasting people:

It was narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

“Whoever gives food to someone who is fasting to break his fast with will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the fasting person’s reward in the slightest.”[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Fifth: Generosity:

It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam was the most generous of people, and he was the most generous during Ramadan. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Sixth: Performing ‘Umrah (lesser pilgrimage) in Ramadan:

It was narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

‘Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent (in reward) to Hajj.”In another narration:“To Hajj with me .” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Seventh: Performing I‘tikaaf (seclusion in the mosque):

I‘tikaaf is in the last ten days of Ramadan. It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (r'ah) said,

“The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam would practice I‘tikaaf during the last ten days of Ramadan until he passed away and then his wives would practice I‘tikaaf after him.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Eighth: Seeking the Night of Al-Qadr (Divine decree) and spending its time in prayer:

It was narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

“Whoever stands (in prayer) during the Night of Al-Qadr out of faith and seeking the reward of Allah, he will be forgiven his previous sins.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

This is is during the last ten days of Ramadan.

Islam Basics: What is Ramadan?

“O you who believe! Observing al-sawn (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become al-muttaqoon (the pious).” (Qur'an, al-Baqarah 2:183)

Many of you may be wondering, what is this thing called ‘Ramadan’? Every year Muslims seem to get very excited about this ‘Ramadan’. You may know a family member, neighbour, co-worker, friend who is fasting throughout Ramadan.

What is it and what makes it so significant?

Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Islamic Calender, and the month in itself changes by 11 days each year as it follows the lunar cycle. However Ramadan is like no other month for Muslims, as it is a month in which we perform one important pillar of our religion-fasting.

Every year for 30 days, over a billion Muslims from all over the globe abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, as well as foul/unpleasant language and anything that is ill-natured or excessive; from dawn until the sun sets. It is a holy month for Muslims and a chance for them to review themselves, their spirituality and their character so they can improve for the better. Just as large corporations have annual reports, the Muslim analysis his/her own self and their relationship with God and others in this one month in order to note down what they have been doing wrong (and strive to change that) and to improve their good aspects.

Ramadan is also significant for several other reasons:

God says in the Qur'an:

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion…” (Qur'an, al-Baqarah, 2:185)

The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the month of Ramadan, and this is of huge significance to a Muslim as the Qur'an is a close companion to the Muslim. It is what we believe to be God’s word which speaks to each Muslim on a personal level, yet also addresses all of Mankind.

Ramadan also offers Muslims a chance for all their previous sins to be forgiven. It offers three opportunities:

1-: By fasting in Ramadan, if with sincerity, they will be forgiven their previous sins
2-: By praying at night in Ramadan and
3- By praying during the last 10 nights of Ramadan as one of those nights will be 'The night of decree’, as in the specific night the Qur'an was revealed.

This is because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven .” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 32, Hadith 231)

“Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 32, Hadith 226)

Ramadan conveys an extraordinary sense of emotional enthusiasm and religious eagerness among Muslims of all ages. Even though fasting is compulsory for capable adults alone (children, the elderly and the ill are exempt from fasting), children as young as eight readily observe or take part in partial fasting with their elders. Children look forward to the thrill of the moon sighting and eating unique meals with their relatives. Adults are grateful for the chance to double their rewards from God and ask for pardon for their past sins. Ramadan highlights Muslim brotherhood and sisterhood, customs and brings about a special feeling of closeness, both to God, and the community.

The full verse:

Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur´an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.

~Surah Al-Baqarah 2 :185

185- The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful. (2:185)

ISLAM 101: Getting ready for RAMADAN: PART 1

Fasting (siyyaam or sawm) is an act of worship which involves abstaining from all food, drink, sexual activity and anything which is bound to break the fast from dawn (the time of calling to the Fajr prayer) till sunset (the time of calling to the Maghrib prayer).

Virtues of the Month of Ramadaan

Ramadaan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is the best month of the year and has a number of virtues, including the following:

It was the month in which the greatest and most exalted of all divine books, the Holy Qur’an, was revealed: “It was in the month of Ramadaan that the Qur’an was revealed, with clear signs of guidance and a criterion of right and wrong. Therefore, those of you who are resident for the month must fast it.” (Soorat Al-Baqarah, 2:185)

The Prophet May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him said, “When the month of Ramadaan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed and the devils are chained.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 3103, Saheeh Muslim: 1079)Thus, it provides an opportunity for the faithful to do their utmost to get closer to Allah by doing righteous deeds and avoiding evil ones.

Whoever fasts during the daylight hours and stands in prayer at night throughout this month will have his past sins forgiven, as the Prophet May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him said, “Whoever fasts in the month of Ramadaan, out of sincere faith and in anticipation of Allah’s rewards [in the hereafter], will have all his past sins forgiven.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 1910, Saheeh Muslim: 760) He also said, “Whoever offers the voluntary night prayers with sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards [in the hereafter] will have all his past sins forgiven.” (SaheehAl-Bukhaaree: 1905; Saheeh Muslim: 759)

Laylat-ul-Qadr (The Night of Decree; also called the Night of Power) occurs in this month. The Qur’an informs us that doing righteous deeds during this night is far better than doing them for many years: “The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.” (Soorat Al-Qadr, 97:3) Aposon who proys on this night out of sincere faith and in anticipation of Allah’s rewards in the hereafter will obtain Allah’s forgiveness of all past sins. This night falls on one of the last ten odd-numbered nights of Ramadaan and no one knows its exact time

The month of Ramadhān [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.
