Universe: The Flash
A/N: Don’t really know if I like this, but I do have something I’m really excited to write!!! It’ll be out soon, thanks for reading loves.
It was just a typical day at S.T.A.R Labs. Cisco was screwing with tech, Caitlin was scanning the computer for any new activity, and you were doing some work Dr. Wells had asked you to accomplish. The team had just recently battled Blackout and were using the peace to experience a bit of normality.
Barry was off at CCPD, his day job keeping him busy. Although for the past few days things had been calm, his strange behavior had been picked up on. Caitlin and Cisco passed it off as some ordeal with Iris, however that was not entirely true, and no one could really figure it out.
Barry typically wore his heart on his sleeve. Even though the small group had only known him for a few months, he was easy to read, but this was something different. You were honestly a bit worried about him. You had been roped into Barry’s lovely charm and sweet heart. You couldn’t help it, with a smile like that you couldn’t believe he wasn’t a heartbreaker.
But now he was acting strange. Jumpy and nervous and borderline confusing. It was hard to figure him out suddenly, especially in the way he had been avoiding you. It hurt, of course it did, but you brushed it off and kept your feelings locked away.
Clearing your thoughts, you let your friends know you were headed for Jitters, always willing to bring a goodie back for them.
Barry sat up in his lab, running his fingers through his hair. He didn’t what to do or how to feel. He hadn’t ever had to question his love for Iris. It was normal for him, to be pining for her, and he just didn’t understand the change. He didn’t really know if it was a welcome one either.
He remembered what he had said to Iris, as the Flash, “You’re worth being on time for.” And she was, of course. He had loved her for over a decade, since he was a child. But it was like that love was slipping through his fingers, and not only because of her and Eddie.
It was because of you.
He couldn’t get you out of his head. You, soft hair and eyes of hope, had captivated his thoughts. You had a heart of love and you cared so deeply for people. You were smart and loyal and absolutely a joy to be around. You were an amazing friend, and for him, you started to become more.
He hadn’t noticed it before really, the way you slipped into his thoughts now and again and how all his sorrows melted when he saw you smile. He hadn’t realized how at peace he was when he was with you. But now that Joe had mentioned it, it was clear and he didn’t know what to do.
He had held onto this hope with Iris for so so long, so much so that to find someone else was practically an implausible thought to him. He was so scared to let go of everything he had been certain of. And someone on the outside may see it as ridiculous, to not accept a new budding love and relish in it. But no one understood Barry. When you’re in love with someone for so long, you forget there’s a whole world out there full of something more. You desperately want them to be the one for you, and it’s hard to cope with the idea that they aren’t.
He sighed, letting out a groan. It was time for his lunch break, and after all, a quick run to Jitters to clear his mind would never hurt.
Barry was there first, of course. Super speed had its advantages. Taking his coffee and lunch, he sat down at a table, his heart rather numb. Iris had gone out with Eddie for her own break, and he was left alone with his thoughts once again.
You walked in, quickly getting on the surprisingly short line. As you waited, you caught sight of him, Barry and his mopey face, having lunch alone. As soon as you get your order, you decide to join him and confront his avoidance.
You settle down on the chair opposite of him and he looks up, obviously surprised. He smiles weakly, a fake one and you see the gears turning in his head, probably thinking of some stupid excuse.
“So, why have you been avoiding me?” You figure bluntness is a great idea, especially because even as friends, it is a valid question. He stares at you, trying to come up with a coherent sentence but often stopping after two words.
“I’m sorry Y/N, I’ve just been so off lately.” He mumbled.
“Yeah, that’s easy to see.” You laugh, lightly putting your hand on his, squeezing it and returning the focus on your food. He looks up at you again, your warmth lingering on his hand.
‘She’s so beautiful.’ his thoughts all wrapping around that one idea. He keeps quiet through the lunch, deciding that he’d ask you to take a stroll after. Maybe, just maybe, he could get the words out.
And so there you two are, walking down the street. One hand rested in his pocket while the other scratched the back of his neck.
“Tell me what’s wrong Barr, you’re worrying me.” You whispered softly, looking up at him. He looks around, contemplating quickly, but he finds he just can’t hold it anymore. Despite how long he was able to keep his feelings for Iris under wraps, he knew if he tried to with you, it would ruin absolutely everything.
“I think- I think I’m in love with you, Y/N, and that scares the hell out of me.”
You stood there, as if the breath had been knocked right out of you. You stare at him blankly, mulling over the words that had just come out of his mouth. He looked like he was going to hurl, or just speed off, but to keep him from doing so, you tug at his hand, despite the fact that you don’t understand and none of your thoughts are lining up.
“Barr, what do you mean? I thought you loved Iris.” You choked.
“It’s exactly that, Y/N. I don’t understand, but I know that I’m falling out of love with her and in love with you. It’s so different with you. So much better. You make me feel whole, and I haven’t felt that in a long time.” It was like the words were coming out of him, no filter and no control. Word vomit. He looked so pale and horrified, but he couldn’t seem to stop himself.
You smile softly, grazing over the ideas in your head. You and Barry waking up in the morning together, lunch dates, burnt roses, and sweet kisses. And you know you want it all.
You had fallen for this tall geek, and all your doubts melted away. You lean up and kiss the corner of his mouth, teasing him. You see the way he smiles at you, and you can’t help but turn to putty.
“I think I’m in love with you too, Bartholomew, and no matter how scary it may be, we’re doing this together.” He beams brighter than the sun.
“Can I take you to dinner, Y/N? I swear I’ll try not to set my clothes on fire.” And you just smile, intertwining fingers with him.
“Would it even be a Barry Allen date if something didn’t go up in flames?”
