TV/Film versions of 19th Century Fictional Male Characters I Would Bang Into The 20th Century (In No Particular Order)

#5 Abraham Van Helsing [Dracula, Bram Stoker] - Peter Cushing edition (Hammer Films, 1958 onwards)

anonymous asked:

I was thinking, as Enjolras clearly isnt interested in girls in Les Mis, he can be gay but he could also be aromantic?

Ok ive sort of answered this before but ill answer it again.

This book is 19th century.

Seeing “not attracted to women” and jumping straight to ace is… It just sits wrong with me. Idk the sterilisation of gay sex or whatever but thats a whole different story.

Victor Hugo uses constant references to greek figures who were rumoured as gay when talking about Enjolras (and R but, again, thats a different story).
Moreover he uses a comparison to “Antinous” which is ACTUAL 19TH CENTURY GAY CODING. THATS. THATS ACTUAL CODE USED BY WRITERS TO CODE MEN AS GAY.

Also just because we do not see Enjolras romantically interested in anyone… Again… Doesnt make him ace. He’s got a revolution to run. Yes, we are told he has never Been With anyone but consider this:

You weren’t allowed to be gay in the 19th century.

Enjolras - rich parents, good student, leader of the bloody revolution - would not exactly be the kind of person who knows where to find the underground gay network or could be seen there. That would be more reserved for people like Grantaire who spend a lot of time with alcohol and various other drugs and pleasures.

So as much as I understand your intent - no. He is in fact just gay. And to have a canon gay character in 19th century literature is rare. Victor Hugo gave us as many clues as he possibly could without putting himself in danger of prosecution. Don’t take that away.

Hellow guys! Update! (And design characters pls?)

Okay so i won’t be making anymore art till I eventually get my laptop back at time to time. So that wouldn’t be happening sooner or later. So please bare with me here that the comic is STILL going. I’ve been doing sketches in the sketchbook and I kinda want to post it for you guys but eh. Nah

SO!

About the character design thing. I wanna ask you guys if you want to creat a character who could play a role as “The host of the restaurant in Snowdin”. And NO. It’s NOT Grillby FYI. But you can make them a FIRE elemental character.

So all I need is:
1. A FULLBODY reference of a fire elemental character with a nice design and good personality

2. A GOOD name for the character which suits the characters personality.

Post it in my inbox with:
1. The ref
2.The name
3. The personality desc (Doesnt need a “Like” or “Dislike” thing. Just general things)

NOTE: if your characrer doesnt get the role of the host, then dont worry! Your characters would be a great baclground characters in hotlands

Don’t speak. Wait till you hear what I have to say. It is quite true that I have worshipped you with far more romance of feeling than a man usually gives to a friend. Somehow, I have never loved a woman. Dorian, from the moment I met you, your personality had the most extraordinary influence over me. I quite admit that I adored you madly, extravagantly, absurdly.
—  Basil Hallward to Dorian Gray, The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wordsworth Classics, Unabridged version.)

One Hundred Peking Opera Characters. Qing Dynasty 1600s-1911, China late 1800s, artist unknown. In the opera boom of the late 19th century, albums were turned to a new purpose: documenting the variety and vibrancy of stage culture in all its multicolored splendor. This album records in detail the makeup&costume of 100 characters drawn from nine plays/operas shown in Peking. Each character is identified w/an inscription&the plays are named@the top right of nine of the leaves in slightly larger script.

Shadows of Valentia Countdown

It’s April 19th, which means Shadows of Valentia releases tomorrow in Japan; however, Western fans still have a month to go, so we at HotE have decided to hold a countdown to make the wait a little more bearable for the rest of us.

What will this entail? Posting all the Gaiden and (non-spoiler) SoV content we can find. Of course, even more important than hyping up excitement for the game and its remake is bringing attention to community artists and writers, so we invite you to submit your own art, fics, videos, meta, etc. that we can reblog/post and call attention to all the wonderful talent we have in the Fire Emblem fandom (as if our art contest wasn’t enough).

Gaiden has historically been the black sheep of the Fire Emblem series, so content is unsurprisingly difficult to find. Our plan is to post fanmade content once a day until May 19th, with character appreciation and meta posts written by the HotE mods scattered throughout.

Interested in contributing? Simply follow these guidelines:

- content can be anything from artwork to fanfiction to detailed analyses about the world/characters

- content does not have to be made specifically for this countdown; simply send us a link to/submission of your work and we’ll reblog it (if it’s on Tumblr) or post it (if it’s hosted off-site)

- content must be related to Gaiden or Shadows of Valentia, but try to keep major story spoilers to a minimum

- if you would like to reserve a date for your work to be posted, please let us know and we will eagerly await your submission! (for example, we would love to see artwork posted for the final 10 days)

- if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask

Thank you!
