18th century paneling

18th Century Japanese Two Panel Painted Screen. All four seasons are represented here, with the background representing Winter and the kimono patterns representing Spring, Summer, and Fall

Details of spring and summer flowers all from an 18th century 6 panel paper screen by Japanese artist Watanabe Shikō (1683-1755). A painting technique called tarashikomi has been used, in which ink is dripped onto another area of colour that is still wet, to create a softly pooled effect - ideal for painting leaves or petals.
