Mexico’s Oil Is Ours
Mexican students, workers, intellectuals and other citizens opposed to the privatization of PEMEX took to the streets to commemorate the 76-year anniversary of the nationalization of Mexico’s oil by president Lázaro Cárdenas.
On March 18, 1938, president Cárdenas issued a decree announcing the expropriation of all of Mexico’s oil and minerals. March 18 is today a national holiday.
In December 2013, Enrique Peña Nieto signed an energy reform bill that modifies the Mexican Constitution to allow private and foreign entities to own (at least partially) Mexico’s oil. Peña Nieto marked today’s holiday by heading an official ceremony in Cosoleacaque, Veracruz, where he called Cárdenas’ decree a “bold and visionary decision,” a statement many called extremely hypocritical.
