  • On Wednesday, Hawaii’s state attorneys requested an emergency order from the federal court in Honolulu in an attempt to halt Trump’s new executive order on immigration before it takes effect on March 16.
  • The executive order, signed on Monday, would ban all refugees for 120 days and ban new visas from six Muslim-majority countries — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — for 90 days.
  • State attorneys argued that the order is unconstitutional and asked the court to halt the ban nationwide, the Huffington Post reported.
  • According to the Independent, the lawsuit claims the discriminatory order will hurt Hawaii’s tourism industry, students and Muslim population. Read more (3/9/17 11:50 AM)

  • The march, as noted on the Stand with Standing Rock website, is being planned by the Native Nations Rise Planning Committee.

  • Though the protest is born out of the Standing Rock movement and fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline, Friday’s protest is a broader call for the tribal rights. Read more (3/6/17 10:50 AM)

New Jersey elementary school under fire for slave auction reenactment

  • An elementary school in New Jersey is facing backlash from parents after a substitute teacher staged a slave auction in a fifth grade classroom, the Huffington Post reported.
  • According to CBS New York, the mock auction took place at Jefferson Elementary School in Maplewood, New Jersey, while the class’s regular teacher was out.
  • The principal sent a letter home to parents explaining that a substitute had conceptualized the exercise, which “was not part of the curriculum, not part of the teacher’s assignment, not condoned by the classroom teacher, and not authorized by the district.”
  • The activity was intended to teach the children about the horrible reality of the slave trade, but understandably, the auction upset parents.
  • “There was a sale of a black child by white children in the classroom,” Tracey Jarmon-Woods told CBS New York. “If you’re demoralized — sold on a block in 2017 — it may affect you the rest of your life.” Read more (3/22/17 10:50 AM)

Northern Irish police raided pro-choice activists’ homes on International Women’s Day

  • A Northern Irish politician has informed the Independent of multiple police raids that took place in the homes and workplaces of pro-abortion rights activists on International Women’s Day.
  • According to the outlet, Belfast, Northern Ireland, authorities carried out the raids in search of abortion pills, which are illegal as abortion itself is illegal in Northern Ireland except under circumstances where the mother’s life or wellbeing is at risk.
  • And that the searches took place on International Women’s Day was no accident, the Independent reported: Police purposely conducted the raids when they knew many feminist activists would be otherwise occupied at rallies and protests. Read more (3/13/17 12:50 PM)
