Even as a young guy I would always prefer talking to fighting.
Okay, I was in a bar in Fairbanks when I was about 21 and I was playing pool. I accidentally knocked over the beer this guy had set on the pool table. He was a big dude with a bushy beard, a huge belly and a red face. He. Was. Pissed. Now, I was 5’10” and weighed about 155 pounds. He must have outweighed me by 80 pounds. He took a drunken swing at me. I ducked. I said “hey man it was an accident I’ll buy you another beer”. He acted as if he hadn’t heard me. He swung another haymaker at me and I just backed out of the way and kept backing up,
He was pretty unsteady on his legs so he lurched toward me. Again I dodged him but this time his momentum made him pitch forward and into the wall knocking down the dart board. I said “Hey I’m sorry about your beer I’ll buy you an…” and was cut off as he lunged at me again. I backed off did a little sweep with my foot and he fell face down into the sawdust. Yeah. Sawdust, it was that kind of place. Now he was seriously riled. His friends were laughing at him. They’re making fun of me too saying “he’s a lover not a fighter” because some of the girls were trying to stop the fight. I didn’t want to hit the dude because I knew he was drunk.
He picked up a pool cue. Now this was getting serious. I fell back into a fighting stance and he stopped. I’m circling him on the balls of my feet with my guard up and swings the pool cue. I dodge it, and once his swing reached the end of its arc and there was no more energy behind the pool cue I just twisted it out of his hands and tossed it behind me. I’m still bobbing and weaving and he just walks away without a word as if he just forgot he was in the middle of a fight.
Later on we became friends. His name was Pierre and he was French Canadian and sober the nicest guy you ever wanted to meet. He didn’t even remember the “fight”. He sold me an old WWII vintage Indian motorcycle on which I nearly killed myself but that is a story for another time.
