10th anniversary jeep rubicon

the new neighbors au: "like to find out?"
[start at the beginning]
  • since the finches have an empire they’re pretty loaded
  • but they’re humble and have a reasonable house and they still teach their kids the value of making a living for yourself
  • both mr and mrs finch came from very poor families
  • they know what it feels like and always try to help those in need
  • they donate a lot of money to the schools and library and the animal shelters and the homeless center
  • they’re really great people
  • so anyway they definitely get their children their own cars
  • harold has a blue 2015 Fiat 500L
  • it’s beyond tiny and root always teases him about it
  • “harry how are you suppose to do anything in here?”
  • “what other things am I suppose to do in here except drive??
  • root gives him a look. “if you ever get with john–”
  • “/root/”
  • she loves teasing her brother
  • root has a light baby blue 2 door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition
  • she’s a little extra
  • the seats are a crimson red, the roof comes off, the driver and passenger doors come off
  • her mother about passed out seeing her daughter roll up with the doors off
  • her father took them off for her
  • he thinks its badass
  • harold refuses to ride in it unless the passenger door is on
  • “tsk tsk, harry, you act like i’m gonna fling you out”
  • “judging by how fast you take corners, i have no doubt that you will”
  • “at least I’m not the one who rear-ended fusco’s car”
  • root loves her jeep but she’s saving up money for a motorcycle
  • she could just ask her parents but she wants to do this on her own
  • shaw used to have an old little pick-up with windows that had to be rolled manually, and it was a stick shift
  • it was hella old
  • the drivers side door didn’t lock, the interior was falling apart, no heat or air conditioner
  • it was a piece of work but the engine ran like a beauty
  • okay, sometimes the brakes went out
  • but the truck was called Toby and he was badass
  • toby was actually her mom’s old pick-up
  • alas, toby had to be traded in
  • shaw’s dad got nervous about the brakes and besides, his daughter deserved an upgrade
  • once they get settled in their new home, shaw’s dad takes her to the car dealership to get anything she wants
  • mr and mrs shaw are really good with their money
  • they have a healthy college fund for sameen and they know when to conserve and when to splurge
  • shaw picks out a black 2015 GMC Chevrolet Silverado
  • its a really fucking huge truck
  • shaw loves it
  • mostly because there’s enough room for sugar to be comfortable
  • when shaw comes back from the dealership, root is reading on her balcony
  • its hard to ignore the giant truck
  • root thinks mr shaw got himself an upgrade
  • oh boy was she wrong
  • shaw hops out of it with the biggest grin on her face
  • tiny shaw in big truck
  • oh god
  • root loves it
  • “hey neighbor!”
  • root was staring
  • again
  • shaw caught her
  • again
  • shaw is smirking and twirling her keys around
  • “wanna check out my new ride”
  • root hauls ass through her house
  • she only ends up falling down the stairs
  • and smacks her shin into the coffee table
  • and trips over bear’s bed
  • shaw may or may not have been timing her
  • 15 seconds a new record
  • she’s a little out of breath and there’s pain in her face but other than that she’s smiling brightly
  • shaw shows her the new truck and instantly root is blown away by the backseats
  • like if you put the seats up 3 full grown people can lay back there
  • or just 2
  • root needs to stop
  • “big truck like this usually means someone’s compensating for something–”
  • shit
  • root didn’t mean that
  • fuckfuckfuck
  • she’s red and she thinks she’s gonna pass out
  • but tHEN
  • shaw is a shit and knows exactly what to say
  • “like to find out?”
  • holy fu–
  • root legitimately passes out
  • she wakes up in her bed with shaw sitting on the floor with bear
  • “how’s your head?”
  • “like someone threw a brick at it”
  • “for someone so light, you fell like a sack of rocks on the concrete. don’t worry, you got a thick skull”
  • “sure do know how to complement a girl”
  • “and you sure don’t know how to flirt with a girl”
  • technically root is fabulous at it
  • but shaw is just so wow and whoa and just something really amazing
  • root can’t think around her
  • “who says I’m trying to flirt with you? maybe i’m just being nice”
  • “labored breathing indicating heart rate increasing. colored cheeks due to blood rushing to your head. dilated pupils that dazed look you get and of course I can hear you talking to yourself in class sometimes”
  • oh fuck
  • yup root is done for
  • then again root was never very subtle
  • she shouldn’t be so surprised
  • but root is still root and she won’t admit to liking shaw until she’s good and ready
  • and by that she means when she can do it in a dramatic way
  • she’s hoping for the cliche in the rain kinda thing
  • maybe a balcony scene instead
  • root lives for the dramatics okay
  • “okay, maybe i possibly do like you, but let’s wait on that”
  • “….okay..? you’re honestly so weird”
  • “don’t worry sweetie, i just want to have my moment. and /my/ moment will be my moment”
  • “so weird”
  • root can be puzzling and sometimes shaw doesn’t like it
  • she likes direct and to the point
  • technically root kinda is direct but still cryptic af
  • but root has grown on shaw so she’ll put up with it for her
  • shaw actually doesn’t mind waiting for root’s ‘moment’
