what we miss … Masta

Derek Bell & Jacky Ickx on the straight leading on to Masta (above) & Jacky Ickx going through the Masta kink (below), one of the most challenging corners in racing history, during the 1975 1000km de Spa at Francorchamps in the Alfa Romeo T33TT12

the race was to be shortened to 750km because of an approaching storm, Derek Bell teamed up with Henri Pescarolo would win the race with Jacky Ickx & Arturio Mezario finishing second making it an Alfa one-two

1975 was the last year the 1000km race was held on the old road circuit of Francorchamps, it returned to the new short circuit in 1982

Jacky Ickx is record holder with 5 wins, he is also one of two racers to have won the 1000km on both the long & short circuit

the beginning of the turbo Porsche

the monstrous Martini Racing Porsche Carrera RSR driven by Gijs van Lennep & Herbert Müller, good enough for a 3rd place during the 1974 1000km de Spa
the car, driven by the same racers, finished 2nd at Le Mans that year
the RSR used a 2.1 litre flat 6 with a turbo & is widely regarded as the start of the turbocharged Porsche racing tradition, its first successor being the 935 series

sports car week … the racing line

Teo Fabi (Martini Lancia LC1) following the Rothmans Porsche 956 of Jakcy Ickx & Jochen Mass (race winners) & the Nimrod-Aston Martin NRA/C2 of Geoff Lees & Tiff Needell through the Busstop chicane, 1982 1000km de Spa, Francorchamps

what we miss … public roads

a view of Eau Rouge & Raidillon, 1985 1000km de Spa, Francorchamps

it was the last race for Stefan Bellof, who crashed after colliding with Jacky Ickx at the bottom of Eau Rouge
watch this great little documentary (German) about Bellof’s last race … it shows Bellof was ‘different’ that race, more turned towards himself than usual, did the death of fellow German Manfred Winkelhock play in his mind, he was focussed on beating the living legend Jacky Ickx more than anything, that would kill him … such a shame!

sports car week … always look over your shoulder

Riccardo Patrese (Martini Lancia LC1) battling it out with Jean-Michel Martin (Belga Joest-Porsche 936C), 1982 1000km de Spa, Francorchamps

Patrese would be able to fight of the Porsche & finish 4th, the rebuild 936 (which was initially a Group 6 car, but Joest transformed the 936 into a Group C car) would finish 5th, 6 laps down

aftermath …

Stefan Bellof, Schiesser Brun-Porsche 956B, 1985 1000km de Spa, Francorchamps
