Foreboding Mushroom Cloud Over Phoenix Turns Out To Be Microbust

Photographer Jerry Ferguson captured a rare natural phenomena while cruising over Phoenix with helicopter pilot Andrew Park on a weather report assignment for a TV station. A gigantic looming mushroom cloud appears to have declared its presence over the heavily populated city, which is in reality a “microbust”. This rare weather phenomenon happens after a thunderstorm when cooled air speeds and crashes to the land at over speeds of over 100 miles an hour, which can create a powerful air current, the result which resembles an alarming mushroom cloud.

Bryan Snider also caught this amazing event in a  time lapse video Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport, which showed just how it formed over the city.

The name ‘Blake’ as an indicator of internal battle with morality.

Ok so after @jontyaxefive’s post about the name ‘Griffin’ I did some quick digging about the name ‘Blake’ and what do you know??? Bellamy’s and Octavia’s story arcs are implied in their surname!

Etymological background.

Aside from being one of the oldest, first recorded Old English names, it derives from blac, blak, blaac and other derivatives, for which there are two possible roots:

1. Either it derives from an infinitive with the root blac, which means to burn. (Derivaties then mean burned, blackened, scorched.)

2. OR it derives from the adjective (that later evolved into the word bleak) with the same root, which meant pale, bright, white, shining.

The Online Etymology Dictinoary cites this: ‘According to OED: “In ME. it is often doubtful whether blac, blak, blake, means ’black, dark,’ or ’pale, colourless, wan, livid.‘’ This means that when the word is used as a descriptor in a text , its meaning has to be derived from the context, not the word itself, and even then it’s sometimes hard to tell what it means.

Here we clearly see the distinction between two polar opposites: light and dark, living and dying, shining and burning out. If we take this to a metaphorical level, it refers to morality: being a good person and being a bad person. In the context of The 100, this is important, because names are chosen delibarately.

I have to go on a slight tangent here because it’s Kass Morgan who named the characters, but the only explanations I could find was for their first names:

Clarke Griffin - Arthur C. Clarke, was a British science fiction writer, science writer and futurist.
Wells Jaha - H. G. Wells, an English writer in many genres, and called father of science fiction.
Octavia Blake - Octavia E. Butler, Female writer, first science fiction writer to win the Genius Grant.
Bellamy Blake - Edward Bellamy, American author and socialist, and futurist writings

There’s nothing about their last names and whether they might hold a metaphorical meaning; but I don’t think it’s a reach to say that Jason Rothenberg and the writers caught on to that and made use of it in his plot. He clearly used the symbolic meaning of ‘griffin’ to form both Abby and Clarke as characters, so it’s safe to assume he did for others as wel (I’m still intrigued by the King Roan/Raven Reyes parallel! Surely that must mean something??).

So what does this mean?

You’ve already guessed it: both Bellamy and Octavia have struggled with morality and what it means to be ‘a good person’. Bellamy has realized that the end does not justify the means, and he’s stated he has to live with what he’s done. This is an indication of the synthesis of ‘the good’ and ‘the bad’ in himself, and that he might not be one or the other, light or dark, bad or good, but both. In the end, everyone has a monster inside of them, and they’re all responsible for what it does when they let it out. The 100 is a show about the greyness of morality in the context of surviving, and this is embodied in all the aspects of characters, from their arcs to their names.

Same goes for Octavia, although she’s not as far in her character arc as Bellamy is now. People say she’s been a moral compass in the first and second seasons, but I never completely agreed with that, and this is exactly why: she always saw herself as on the white/right side of the morality spectrum, but she isn’t; and that will be her next lesson. Will she come out in the same way Bellamy did though? I’m not sure. I hope she does because I’d hate for the only sibling relationship to end badly, but we’re never sure with this show.

Of course, this struggle with good and bad and the acceptance of moral greyness is something all the characters live through, but I’d say the narrative has focused on Bellamy most to make this clear. Especially his season 1 arc embodied the aspect of first repressing his ‘light’ side, realizing he’d done wrong and trying to earn redemption, while not being able to fully repress his ‘dark’ side until his heroic actions in season 2. Season 3 was IMO a reiteration of that arc, but had a stronger confirmation in the end about his realization that he’s not a bad person even though he’s done bad things.

@abazethe100  @easnadh1  @rashaka @rosymamacita and all Bellamy Blake fans please tell me you have as much feelings about this as I do.
