It’s not your job to restrict my life. No other social media does this. Stop. Let me turn this damn safe mode off.
And people have said that this one of Jim in TFP at 38:25 is also fourth-wall breaking, but I don’t consider it this because he’s talking to Mycroft; the camera is where Myc’s shoulder is:
It’s not fourth wall breaking, to me, if the character is talking to another character. Sherlock does it often enough in the series when we are “the deduction wall”, as in when we are watching from the POV of the wall or the monitor. These ones are more noticeable because these are the ACTORS – NOT THE CHARACTERS – LOOKING AT THE CAMERA.
The John one is the most blatant one, I think, because it’s ALL MARTIN, and it’s the LONGEST ONE; HE LITERALLY ACKNOWLEDGES THE CAMERA AND TAKES A SIP OF WINE:
So yeah, gang, please add others if you see them. Remember: they have to NOT be part of the “script” of sorts. Just the actors breaking character and staring at the camera.

Black fabric mask secured over the lower half of his face,
Jungkook waits tensely in a coffee shop half a block from his family’s
penthouse. Its 2 minutes before noon, and his leg bounces nervously under the
table, his coffee already gone cold.
Managing to get a whole of 3 hours of sleep the night prior,
still too bothered with the thought of you potentially being in trouble to be
able to get some shut eye, Jungkook had slipped out of the house early that
morning, requesting his regular chauffeur to take him to campus a tad sooner
than usual. The driver had complied, toting him half way across the city to the
usual spot where Jungkook was dropped off and picked up. Jungkook then left as
usual, walking towards his building, but this time he had no plan on going to
class. As soon as the Jeon heir was far enough from the car which had dropped
him off, he ducked into a building and watched through the old, clouded windows
for the car to leave. It took a few seconds, his driver likely confused as to
why Jungkook was going into that building when he usually didn’t, but luckily a
car wanting to get by honked in slight anger, and the chauffer immediately
placed the car in drive and coasted away as if nothing had happened.
Sighing thankfully to the impatient college driver who had
honked, Jungkook waits in the building for a few long minutes. He wants to be
perfectly sure that his car won’t circle back around to look for him, and when
5 minutes pass and there’s no sign of his chauffeur, Jungkook determines that
Nodding to himself, determination for what he now has to do
settling in his gut, Jungkook shrugs his book bag off his shoulder, unzipping
the main pouch. Today his normal folders and notebooks are nowhere to be found,
replaced by a spare coat, hat, and a mask. Jungkook knows that his father has
men stationed all over the city—maybe not on the lookout for him, since as far
as they know nothing out of the ordinary is going on—but Jungkook won’t risk
anything. It seems to him that his father is currently scheming with Taehyung
against Namjoon, judging by the small amount of their conversation he had
overheard last night, but Jungkook needs Namjoon by his side. He needs
Namjoon’s friendship because right now Namjoon holds all the information
Jungkook wants to know about you. And…more so…Namjoon truly isn’t too bad of a
guy, in Jungkook’s eyes—better than his father, at least—and Jungkook doesn’t
feel well knowing that his family is possibly working to…hurt Namjoon in some
So, changing his jacket, hiding his face behind a plain back
mask, and tucking his hair beneath a dark blue hat, Jungkook had left the
building he’d taken refuge in, walking back into the city. He didn’t want to
risk a taxi or a bus, so he had braved the chilling winds and had walked the crowded
streets of Seoul. After nearly 40 minutes he finally arrived at the café
Namjoon had requested he wait at—the brief text containing the location
arriving at just shy of 5am that morning.
And now here he is, Jeon Jungkook, eyes boring into the watch
on his wrist, the second hand ticking past the 12 mark, officially meaning that
it was noon. His leg continued to bounce with nervous energy, hand reaching
into his pocket to check his cellphone, and as soon as the device is in his
hand, it buzzes, a new text message lighting up the screen.
I’m stopped behind a
bus at the light outside the coffee shop. Come now.
Reading the words with unsteady concentration, Jungkook
quickly stands, bumping into the table as he reaches for his backpack and heads
outside. Not bothering to correctly zip up his coat, the cold air immediately
soaking into his skin, Jungkook glances both ways down the congested street,
breaking into a jog when he spots the bus a little ways up the sidewalk, a
black car with tinted windows momentarily stalled behind it.
As he approaches the car, his feet suddenly falter as he
realizes that he’s currently putting himself in danger. He has no clue what’s
going on right now—who he can trust and who might be hiding in the city ready
to hurt him. As a Jeon he had been targeted before. Once or twice, but nothing
serious. A kidnapping attempt here or there by people desperate to use him as
ransom in return for monetary repayment from his father, but all attempts had
been thwarted by family men—faint screams ringing in Jungkook’s ears, but he
hadn’t put all the pieces together until he’d gotten a bit older.
Yet, despite the danger, Jungkook regains his stride,
especially when the light in front of the bus turns green, the tinted car
honking urgently. He can’t stall for much longer, and Jungkook rushes forward,
pulling open the passenger door, grateful to see Namjoon occupying the driver
“Christ kid, hurry it up,” Namjoon sighs as he steps on the
gas, following behind the bus. Jungkook rolls his eyes, dropping his bag on the
floor between his feet.
“You could have actually stopped somewhere to wait.”
“I could have, but everything feels risky nowadays,” Namjoon
mumbles, eyes casting to the side. Jungkook can immediately tell how tired the
older male is, dark bags hanging under his eyes, unkempt facial hair prickling
his chin and upper lip.
“Hyung…,” Jungkook says, voice sympathetic yet serious. His
eyes harden, heart steeling as he shifts to face Namjoon. “What’s going on?
Please, you need to tell me…”
“The other day–,” Namjoon starts after a moment of
hesitation, knuckles turning white around the steering wheel. “Y/N came over. I
was trying to make things right after
everything that had been happening. It went well, really well…,” he says with
fondness, his defenses momentarily dropping, but as he continues recounting
what had occurred Jungkook sees his body curl in on itself, anger staining his
“I got a call that morning from a client. Left Y/N to sleep
because I figured I’d be right back…I asked Yoongi to check on her. He…,”
Namjoon takes a moment to calm himself, throat tight, adam’s apple bobbing. “He
got there and saw Y/N in Jimin’s car. Jimin somehow got into my apartment and
took her. Yoongi gave chase, but…”
Stopped at another red light, Namjoon slams his fist on the
dashboard, and Jungkook winces, heart sinking into his stomach.
“She’s gone?” the younger whispers, hands laying stiffly in
his lap. Namjoon bites his lip, trying his best not to give into all the dark
thoughts lurking in his mind.
“She is—but I’ve got people looking for her. We’re going to
get her back, Kookie–,” reaching over, Namjoon places his hand on Jungkook’s
knee and the younger startles, immediately batting Namjoon’s hand away, his
eyes filled with rage. However, when Jungkook sees the hurt and pain on
Namjoon’s face, that spark of anger dies, and he hunches over, pressing his
palms to his face.
“I know this isn’t your fault, hyung…I’m sorry. I just—”
“You can blame me if it makes it easier,” Namjoon responds, dead
eyes tracking the road. Jungkook shakes his head, taking a deep breath as he
pushes any potential tears back into their sockets.
“I won’t blame you. I can tell that you’ve changed, Namjoon
hyung. You care for Y/N, and I can tell this isn’t easy for you, so I’m sorry I
reacted like that, I just…she’s my friend, you know?” Jungkook says quietly,
loosely hugging his arms to his chest. “I don’t have many, and none else like
her, considering father’s—”
“Right, your father,” Namjoon interrupts, suddenly remembering
the reason he’d had to call Jungkook out in public to meet like this.
Jungkook’s eyes widen as well, and the two males stare at each other,
“Right, right—my dad!” Jungkook recalls, eyes searching his
lap as he tries to remember everything he had overheard the night before. “I—last
night a guy named V showed up at our door. He told me to call him—”
“Taehyung,” Namjoon growls, swerving into a small parking
lot and shifting the car into P. He can’t trust himself to continue driving
calmly when he’s got all this shit on his mind—and Taehyung is not helping. Especially after he’d
touched you…and now he’s apparently making ties with Jungkook’s father, which
“Yeah,” Jungkook nods, biting his bottom lip with his teeth,
his eyebrows furrowing. Last night he hadn’t been able to recall where he’d
heard the name before, but pairing it with Namjoon’s reaction…
“Is that they guy who hurt Y/N? At the club?”
“Yeah,” Namjoon sighs, fingers coasting through his messy
hair. Jungkook scowls.
“Right…now that I think about it, it makes sense. The guy
was such a goddamn flirt—even with me—”
“Taehyung is very…open,” Namjoon says cautiously, and then
shakes his head, getting back to the situation at hand. “What did he say to
“I went looking around last night because one of our maids
broke a glass, and on my way back to my room I overheard my father and Taehyung
talking. They…said something about…,” he furrows his eyebrows, trying to recall
the faint words he’d managed to pick up on. “They mentioned a girl, your name,
bait, and a ball next week. They–! They said something about another man, and
how my father was glad he had trusted Taehyung’s friend, Jimin…”
Namjoon groans, palms dragging down his face. “Fuck–! I forgot that Taehyung and Jimin are friends, those little
“…the person who took Y/N from your apartment—you…said his
name was Jimin, right?”
“Yeah,” Namjoon grits, palms pressing into his straining
eyes. “Yeah, it was Jimin. And if Taehyung got Jimin to do his dirty work and
kidnap Y/N, and Taehyung is suddenly your dad’s best friend, then…”
The car falls silent, and Jungkook and Namjoon’s eyes meet.
If Taehyung and Jungkook’s father are working together
against Namjoon, then—
Jungkook sees the flash of distrust that momentarily passes
through Namjoon’s eyes, and while Namjoon and Jungkook have never truly been
friends, the younger’s heart aches.
“Hyung—Namjoon hyung I promise I’m not against you, please,”
Jungkook says, leaning over to rest his hand on Namjoon’s thigh. He can feel
Namjoon’s muscles stiffen beneath him, but his face gives away nothing.
Hello! You might remember me as a person who sometimes draws comics on this site! I’ve been busy as heck with end-of-term work and also some work-related travel(!), so it’s taken me a while to get everything done and then also remember how to draw. The good news is that I’m working on a new Summer Comic Project–
–and the other good news is that I’m drawing it completely print-ready for once, so I’m hoping to make some A5 minicomic booklets out of it (and possibly some older material: the last 6 months or so of comics are–totally unintentionally–exactly the right size, horizontally). The bad news is that there’s no way I’m gonna have it done in time to print/assemble it for Anime North in May so I won’t be able to hand out freebies and probably won’t be attending the con at all due to work/budget restrictions. (Everyone else have fun, though! Especially you fellow artists!) The consolation is that I’m hoping to finish this thing in batches and then post it a few pages at a time based on where it’ll split up naturally.
P.S. I’m still trying to sort out the JJL timeline in my head. It’s really weird to be making something that you want to be at least plausible while running with the limited information that you have in the moment. So many things make so little sense as they stand now…

The first days of summer that year were glorious. The
flowers were in full bloom, and everywhere you looked there was colour and
brilliance swaying in the soft wind. Seoul itself had perked up, and it was
finally beginning to feel like home.
“I’m telling you, it makes no sense,” Taehyung whined,
flopping onto his back and letting his notebook slip off his lap. “English is
such a complicated language. Why do I still have to learn it?”
“Come on, try again,” you encouraged, nudging his leg. “You
almost had it this time.”
“Let’s go out again.” Jungkook’s head rose from his desk and he stared at you as you stood in front of his desk, hands on your hips.
“You want to go on another date? Sure. Where though?” You sat down on the desk in front of his and placed your hands on your lap.
“Well, since we’re literally on the verge of summer, it’s gotten hotter so we should go to the beach.” His eyebrows rose at your suggestion before he slowly nodded his head.
“Okay, I can borrow Namjoon Hyungs car and drive us down there.”
“You can drive?” A small smirk spread on his lips at your question, and you in turn raised an eyebrow.
“Kind of. Hyung taught me, I just don’t have a ‘real’ license.” Your eyebrows furrowed and you stood from the desk, lightly smacking him on the head. “How do I know you won’t end up crashing the car? I don’t want to die.”
A boyish chuckle escaped him and he rested his head on his arms once again, closing his eyes.
“I’d never hurt you let alone kill you. Just trust me on this one.” Still a bit worried, you bit your lip before turning around.
“Oh and Y/N?” When you turned back to look at Jungkook, he had his eyes open again, eyebrows drawn together. He reached out and tugged your skirt lower down your legs.
“There’s a shit ton of perverts in this school. I don’t like when they look at you like you’re a piece of meat.”
Overprotective much? Not that you minded.
You had arranged to go to the beach on your next school break which was convenient since it was only two weeks later. When the Monday of your date rolled around, you found yourself eagerly packing your bag for the day out. Jungkook had said to be ready at 11am which was only a mere hour away. You threw in all the necessites needed for a day at the beach and double checked your outfit for the day.
A black crotchet halter top paired with a plain white skirt that stopped mid thigh and a large thin cardigan that reached down to your knees. Obviously you were wearing your swimming costume underneath to save time when you arrived at the beach. Your phone vibrated when a new message came through and you glanced at the screen, seeing that Jungkook was waiting for you outside. Grabbing your bag and slinging it over your shoulder, you headed downstairs and bid your family goodbye before slipping on your flats and exiting the house. Judging by the heat you were immediately hit with, you had picked the perfect day to go to the beach.
A honk caught your attention and you spotted Jungkook sitting in a white convertible BMW. Jogging towards the car, you couldn’t contain your surprised face as you opened the passenger door and slid into the seat next to him.
“Namjoon drives a BMW?” He glanced at you before returning his attention back to the window in front of him, slowly driving out onto the road.
“Not really, it’s his but he doesn’t really use it… I guess he’s trying to keep it as new as possible since it took him ages to save up for it.” Jungkook then reached to his side without taking his eyes off the road and handed you an iced tea from your favourite café.
“It’s hot so I bought you a drink.” You smiled at his thoughtful gesture and thanked him, gratefully taking the drink and sipping on it whilst staring at his unchanging face. Since the drive there would be at least an hour and a half, you passed the time by making small talk and before you knew it, Jungkook was parking the car in a parking lot. Grabbing your things, you stepped out of the car and stretched. Jungkook had taken a beach umbrella out of the trunk and begun raising the roof and locking the doors whilst you took it upon yourself to look for a spot. Not many people were out today so there was plenty of spaces available. Settling for one in between the ocean and the food stand, you gently placed your towel on the ground and sat down. Jungkook stabbed the bottom of the umbrella into the ground, providing you with relief from the sun.
“Are you not going in the water?” Laying back down on your towel, you glanced up at Jungkook’s confused face before giving him a slight smile.
“Now’s the perfect opportunity to try and get a tan. I’ll go in later.” Shaking his head at your reply, he stripped his shirt off and laid himself down next to you. You tried your hardest to not ogle at his defined abs.
“You’re not even going to change into your swimsuit?”
That would have been a smart thing to do.
You smiled sheepishly and shimmied out of your skirt, pulling your cardigan and top off to reveal your black and white striped two piece. Jungkook didn’t say anything and instead gave you a half smirk to which you shook your head in amusement. Slapping on a layer of sunscreen, you laid back down and closed your eyes. You weren’t sure how long you were like that for but a sudden shadow that cut off the only light you had made you open your eyes again. A girl stood before you with a slightly embarrassed face.
“Um, sorry to bother you but would you and your friend like to join me and my boyfriend in a game of volleyball? You don’t have to if you don’t want to.” She kind of reminded you of Areum which caused a smile to grow on your face before you nodded enthusiastically. She returned your smile with a grin before she headed back in the direction she had come from. Turning to Jungkook, you were slightly shocked to see he had fallen asleep.
Well, you did kind of ignore him in favour of a tan so it’s no wonder he fell asleep with no one to talk to.
Crawling towards him, you placed a hand on his cheek, lightly tapping. His eyebrows furrowed and he grabbed your wrist but made no move to remove your hand. Sighing, you bent down and placed a kiss to his forehead which caused him to shift slightly.
“Kookie? Come on wake up. Let’s play volleyball.” His eyes slowly opened at the mention of volleyball and he rose up from his position in the sand, running a hand through his hair. Blinking a couple of times, he then lent forward and rested his forehead on your shoulder, snaking his arms around your waist.
“Volleyball…?” His raspy voice made goosebumps rise on your skin and you patted the back of his head, encouraging him to lift his head. When he did, he stared at you with half closed eyes and a drowsy smile on his face.
“With who?” You pointed in the direction the girl had went and he followed your finger to see the couple standing before a net a little ways away, smiles on their faces. Rubbing his face, he stood himself up and grabbed your hand, hauling you up too.
“Fine but there’s not going to be any real competition. You’re dating the golden maknae so my skill has rubbed off on you.” He began to walk in the direction of the net with you following closely behind, hands still joined together.
“I’m going to assume your calling me golden and take that as a compliment for your own good.” You could tell he was smiling without even having to look at his face. Upon arriving, the couple greeted you and introduced themselves as Seo-Jun and Ha-Yun.
“You two are dating right? That’s great! A battle of the couples then.” You grinned at Ha-Yun’s words whilst Jungkook looked out towards the sea, nodding his head with a blank look on his face. Settling on your side of the net, you watched with anticipation as Seo-Jun served the ball and Jungkook immediately sprinted forward, jumping up into the air and smacking it down on the other side of the net. You stood there in absolute shock at the speed and power he delivered and it seemed your opponents were just as shocked because Ha-Yun’s mouth had dropped open whilst Seo-Jun’s eyes were as wide as saucers.
At this point you knew without a doubt Jungkook could carry your team on his shoulders with no help at all.
But you happened to be extremely competitive too, not to mention now that you were dating the 'golden maknae’ you had a status to uphold.
“1 point to Jungkook and Y/N. Definitely did not see that coming.” Seo-Jun nervously chuckled and Ha-Yun blinked a couple of times before regaining her composure. Readying yourself for the next point, you tied your hair up in a high ponytail and made eye contact with Jungkook, to which he gave you a quick nod. Ha-Yun served this time and Jungkook watched as you bounced the ball back over. Just as it was making its way back to your side, Jungkook took the chance to earn your team another point. It was at this point where the opposing team seemed to take Jungkook’s skills seriously. Seo-Jun too, began scoring points and you had to refrain from jumping out of the way of the incoming ball. He was a lot stronger than you had initially thought.
The match continued on like this for at least twenty minutes before you and Jungkook had taken the lead. He seemed to be impressed with how you were currently playing and you couldn’t deny that made you feel proud of yourself. The ball was served by Seo-Jun once again and Jungkook moved forward, preparing himself to score yet another point. However, he tripped right when his hand made contact with the ball and sent it flying straight up into the air. Scrambling up he glared up at the ball before he motioned for you to get closer to him. Hoping you understood what he intended for you to do, you jogged forward before placing a hand on his shoulder whilst he lifted you up, sending you into the air and you slapped your hand down on the ball. Whizzing past Seo-Jun, you watched as Ha-Yun attempted to return the ball but ultimately fail. Luckily Jungkook hadn’t actually thrown you all that high so he easily caught you, placing you down on the ground.
“That was amazing! It was like something out of a movie!” Ha-Yun gushed over your improvised move and you grinned back at her, Jungkook shaking hands with Seo-Jun.
“That was a great game. We should play again sometime.” Jungkook nodded, a small smile spreading in his face. When you parted ways, exchanging contact information with Seo-Jun and Ha-Yun, Jungkook turned to you and grabbed your hand, leading you back to your spot on the beach.
“I didn’t think you had it in you to pull a move like that off.” Laughing, you peered into his face.
“Well what did you think I was going to do?” Shrugging his shoulders, he brushed off the remaining bits of sand from his trunks. Taking two cold water bottles out of the cooler bag, you handed him one and went on to gulp down half of your own bottle, watching him do the same. He wiped his mouth with the back of this hand before replying.
“I don’t know, bounce the ball in my direction?”
“I’m not that incapable.” It was his turn to chuckle now and he threw his arm around your shoulder, leading you towards the sea.
“We should celebrate by getting wet.” Rolling your eyes, you stopped in front of Jungkook, poking him on the bicep. There was more muscle than you had expected.
“That was so uncalled for.”
He smirked before staring straight at you. “I really couldn’t pass up the chance to say that. Besides, I’ve always wanted to do this.”
He proceeded to shove you backwards and you stumbled a good distance back, regaining your footing. You had ended up waist deep in the water.
“Wow, how did I not see that coming? Typical beach move.” Deciding to take revenge, you began to march through the water towards him. You hadn’t even made it three steps before you stepped on a massive clump of seaweed, effectively making you slip backwards and disappear underneath the waters surface. When you managed to get back up, Jungkook’s distinct laughter was what you heard and your face burned crimson.
“Now that was anything but typical.” Jungkook then walked into the water and when he noticed you were still vexed, he grabbed the sides of your face and lowered his head down to kiss you. When he released you, your annoyed expression was replaced with a delighted smile.
“Let’s see who can hold their breath the longest!” Your suggestion made him raise an eyebrow.
“What are you, five?” Although he seemed to question your childish idea, he began counting down and you both dunked your head underneath the waters surface.
In the end, Jungkook had won and requested two more rounds. You goofed around for about two hours and then you found yourself lying by the shore on the sand, staring up at the sky.
“It’s going to rain.”
Turning his head in your direction, Jungkook gazed at the side of your face in fondness.
“Should we go then?”
Releasing air from your nose, you continued staring up at the grey clouds that were approaching.
“No… we’re already wet anyway.”
He didn’t reply and instead continued eyeing you. When the first couple drops of rain had fallen, you shifted your body onto its side and faced Jungkook, returning his gaze with as much tenderness as he was showing.
“I’m sorry for ignoring you when we got here. It wasn’t intentional.”
His eyes closed a little and a soft smile he only ever showed to those close to him grew on his face. The warm drops of rain began to fall heavier, however, you made no move to get up.
“I know. Don’t worry I wasn’t feeling neglected or anything.”
A relieved smile soon spread on your lips and you brought a hand up to his face, resting it on his cheek.
“Besides that fall you had made up for it anyway.” Your face darkened and a glare settled on your face.
“I hope you catch a cold.”
“I don’t mind as long as you catch one too. Besides, you would have to take care of me.”
“No I wouldn’t. I’d just send Jin over in a pink frilly apron to torment you. He is the mother of the group after all.”
“If you do that I’ll make you sit through Jimin and Taehyung’s English.” A distant memory of Taehyung and Jimin discussing the word 'beach’ in English crossed your mind and you shivered at the thought.
“Now that’s just plain evil.”
Your conversation ended there and a comfortable silence settled. At least twenty minutes later you decided that you should leave and you stood up, grabbing your things and finding the changing rooms and showers. After ten minutes, you reemerged sand free and changed. The rain had become a light drizzle and Jungkook was leaning against the wall outside of your stall. He motioned in the direction of the car with his head and you hoisted your bag further up your shoulder, trailing behind him.
Once you were both inside the car, you gave him a lingering kiss on the cheek.
“Thank you for driving out here.”
“My princess is grateful? That’s a first.”
“Don’t make me take back what I said.”
“I’m just teasing. You’re welcome, Y/N.”
He ruffled your hair affectionately with one hand, his other still on the wheel and his eyes trained on the road. Smiling to yourself, you turned your attention to the window, watching the buildings pass by.
Looks like you were safe in a car with him for now.
Did you know that much of the ocean's food chain depends on the moon? Algae move towards moonlight to the surface in the evening, and creatures who feed on them go after them, so on and so forth.
Well, you learn something new every day! Here are some more ocean facts!
1. For starters, did you know that 94 percent of life on Earth is aquatic? That makes us land-dwellers a very small minority.
2. About 70 percent of the planet is ocean, with an average depth of more than 12,400 feet. Given that photons (light) can’t penetrate more than 330 feet below the water’s surface, most of our planet is in a perpetual state of darkness.
3. Fifty percent of the United States (in terms of our complete legal jurisdiction, which includes ocean territory) lies below the ocean.
4. The deep sea is the largest museum on Earth: There are more artifacts and remnants of history in the ocean than in all of the world’s museums, combined.
5. We have only explored less than 5 percent of the Earth’s oceans. In fact, we have better maps of Mars than we do of the ocean floor (even the submerged half of the United States).
6. The longest mountain range in the world is under water. Called the Mid-Oceanic Ridge, this chain of mountains runs through the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and into the Indian and Pacific oceans. It runs more than 35,000 miles long, has peaks higher than those in the Alps and it comprises 23 percent of the Earth’s total surface.
7. We didn’t send divers down to explore the Mid-Ocean Ridge until 1973 — four years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon — when a French-American crew of seven entered the 9,000-foot-deep Great Rift in the French submersible Archimede.
8. The ocean boasts an array of unusual geographic features, such as pillars that reach several stories high and chimneys that send up sulphuric acid. In the ocean-floor neighborhood of the Gulf of Mexico, brine pools mark the floor, along with underwater volcanoes that spew mud and methane, rather than lava.
9. These wonderful formations aren’t barren, either. Underwater hot springs that shoot water that’s 650 degrees Fahrenheit — hot enough to melt lead — boast a profusion of life, from 10-foot tall tubeworms to giant clams that function without digestive systems.
10. Many of the rules that apply on land are turned upside down in the ocean, some literally. Beneath the surface, often not far from popular vacation beaches, are underwater lakes, waterfalls and even upside-down lakes!
11. Much of the life in the oceans, as on land, is invisible to the naked eye. For instance, if you’ve ever swallowed a milliliter of ocean water, know that you also gulped 1 million bacteria and 10 million viruses — give or take a few. No need to worry though, swimmers around the world swallow some ocean water during their ventures into the water, without ill effects.
12. Also living on hydrothermal vents are 140- to 160-foot long jellies, which use a process called chemosynthesis (think photosynthesis, but adapted to zero sunlight) to convert the hydrothermal water into simple sugars for food. Most striking are the extremes in which the jellies live. Temperatures vary drastically near the vents, so while the tops of the jellies enjoy lows of 37 degrees, their bottoms (at the vent) bask in a toasty 392 degrees — happy as clams, or jellies, rather.
13. Extreme temperatures aren’t the only seeming barrier to life, but again, the laws below the surface differ from those above. The immense pressure of the water on a human diving to greater depths is one of the biggest hurdles to exploring the deepest parts of the oceans — yet, at depths that would crush the Titanic like a Coke can, crabs, octopuses and tubeworms go about their business.
14. But even the more familiar ocean creatures have interesting and unexpected traits and habits. Did you know that an octopus’s speed of travel never exceeds that of the surrounding waves? That same octopus employs amazing camouflaging talents — changing color, shape, and even its texture, pattern and brightness — to blend in to its surroundings.
15. Another example is the male squid, which turns a warm brown color to attract females, or white to warn away interloping males. Most intriguing is that the male never shows its white, aggressive side to the female. In a colorful show of marine multitasking, the male squid will turn the side facing his prospective mate the welcoming brown, while simultaneously turning sideways so that she can’t see he’s made his outward-facing flank white.
