THEORIES ABOUT THE UNIVERSE

I am trying to see things in perspective.
My dog wants a bite of my peanut butter
chocolate chip bagel. I know she cannot
have this, because chocolate makes dogs
very sick. My dog does not understand this.
She pouts and wraps herself around my leg
like a scarf and purrs and tries to convince me
to give her just a tiny bit. When I do not give in,
she eventually gives up and lays in the corner,
under the piano, drooping and sad. I hope the
universe has my best interest in mind like I have
my dogs. When I want something with my whole
being, and the universe withholds it from me,
I hope the universe thinks to herself: “Silly girl.
She thinks this is what she wants, but she
does not understand how it will hurt.

“I can’t even say the word. Why can’t I say the word? I mean, why can’t I just say…? I mean, what is wrong? Why do I have to be so ashamed? I mean, why can’t I just say the truth? I mean, be who I am? I’m thirty-five years old, I’m so afraid to tell people…Susan, I’m gay.” – Ellen Morgan (@theellenshow) to Susan (@lauradern), “Ellen,” “The Puppy Episode,” April 30, 1997.
.
On April 30, 1997, twenty years ago today and two weeks after Ellen DeGeneres publicly acknowledged her sexuality, Ellen Morgan, lead character of ABC’s “Ellen,” came out.
.
After the first three seasons of “Ellen,” producers were frustrated with a lack of focus and Ellen’s lack of interest in the stereotypical sitcom relationship; one producer suggested Ellen just get a puppy to show the world that a relationship was not in the cards, hence “The Puppy Episode.”
.
During the fourth season, as word of the coming out episode spread, a backlash started; a bomb threat came, DeGeneres’ safety was threatened, sponsors (including J.C. Penney and Wendy’s) pulled out, affiliates refused to run the episode, and right-wing conservatives hurled anti-gay slurs (Reverend Jerry Falwell, for example, hurled the infamous “Ellen Degenerate,” to which DeGeneres responded, “I’ve been getting that since the fourth grade”).
.
And, even after “The Puppy Episode” drew forty-two million viewers and won two Emmys, a Peabody Award, and a GLAAD Media Award, ABC still prefaced each subsequent episode of "Ellen” with a parental advisory warning.
.
The show was canceled after its fifth season.
.
“It’s easy to forget now, when we’ve come so far,” President Barack Obama said when awarding DeGeneres the Presidential Medal of Freedom, “just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out…What an incredible burden that was to bear. To risk your career like that. People don’t do that very often.”
.
There is no question that Ellen Morgan’s self-declaration marked a paradigm shift for queer representation in media. Never again would it be impossible to imagine a gay lead character, nor a supporting character that defied rigid stereotypes, in mainstream media. #lgbthistory #HavePrideInHistory #ThankYouEllen

MY MOTHER ASKED ME TO STOP WRITING ABOUT HER

  1

When my best friend was a child,
her mother used The Game of Life
as a metaphor to explain sexuality.

“You can have two pink guys
or two blue guys, you know,”
she explained.

My best friend is so straight,
  she doesn’t even masturbate.

Still, she always knew that even
if she wasn’t, even if someday she ended up
  shotgun to another pink piece,

she would remain loved and supported.

She wouldn’t have to ask for forgiveness.
Of all the things she was taught to apologize for,
love has never been one of them.

  2

My mother doesn’t bring up my sexuality
anymore. I think she is tired of arguing.

She is sick of reading about her faults
  in my poetry. She hates my selective memory;
how I only remember the sharp things,
the slammed doors, the heavy whiskey.

“I used to sing to you before bed
  every night,”
she reminds me icily.
“but you must’ve forgotten that story.”

Last week, she silently folded up her old flannels
and placed them at the foot of my bed.

I know this is probably just a coincidence,
not a peace treaty or an attempt to understand me.

  But for my own well-being,
I have to take this as a sign she is trying,

  even if it isn’t.

Everything Comedienne Quinta Brunson Does Goes Viral

Quinta Brunson never imagined she’d become a real-life Spider-Man.

No, she doesn’t crawl walls and she doesn’t have enhanced strength or speed, but her love for Spider-Man as a child set the groundwork for her passion for creating good work to help others visions come to life. “I’ve always been into helping others,” she tells ESSENCE. “I never set out to be an inspiration, I just try to make good work. I [just] want to drink water and not hurt people.”

Watch any of Brunson’s Buzzfeed videos (we recommend Seeing Your Ex In Public) and you’ll see one of the brand’s youngest content creators (she’s only 27, y’all) doing her thing in a powerful way.

Brunson isn’t your typical writer or video producer. She’s more than that. Her focus is to blur the lines between digital and TV. Her viral Instagram series “The Girl Who’s Never Been on a Nice Date” put her on the map, giving her the opportunity to become the development partner at Buzzfeed and even create three shows, and even sell one entitled "Broke,” to YouTube Red.

She’s also a unicorn—she’s a Temple University drop out who appears on a Forbes 30 under 30 list, but she remains humble. “I’ve removed the thought that I’ve made it because it keeps changing,” she says. “Thinking I’ve made it would stunt my growth.

Although the Philadelphia-native has accomplished a lot, Brunson has yet to work with Chris Rock, who tops her list of comedians she’s dying to work with. “Chris Rock is so amazing to me,” she says. “ He does an excellent job at storytelling—he’s done what they say a Black man couldn’t do.”

Brunson’s incredible command of the craft is apparent, but she’s also happy and willing to offer words of advice for future Instagram stars looking to create a viral video.

“It needs to be shocking, and plain ol’ fun to watch,” she says. “Relatability is huge. Remember, people want to see themselves in something.”

Spoken like a true superhero.

Even his daughter ships it

But mostly I love them because they’re both better when they’re with each other

On 8am classes:

I am honestly sick and tired of everyone telling freshmen not to take 8 ams no matter what. It really discourages me. So, here are some bonuses to early morning classes instead!

  1. Quieter campus!
  2. If you get up even before your early classes, the gym won’t be as crowded!
  3. Probably easier to find the class you want and get in!
  4. If you’re like me, you’re energized in the morning but dead by like 3. Taking early classes means I’m done between 12:30 and 3:30 and I don’t have to drag myself through classes in the late afternoon/evening!
  5. By the time everyone else is waking up, you’ll already have gone to class, done homework, and accomplished things!

Add more if you’ve got them. Let’s encourage others to not fear 8am classes!
